Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to distinguish between the indispensable (software) versus discretionary (accessories) complementary products to a platform. It investigates the impact of accessories on increasing the perceived value and sales of a base platform. In particular, the role of two distinct characteristics of accessories – innovativeness and structural nonalignability – in driving the sales of the base platform.
Design/methodology/approach
Combining sales data from the US video gaming industry with primary data on the above two aspects of accessories, this study quantifies the effect of accessories portfolio on the sales of three brands of video gaming platforms.
Findings
A distinct network externality arises from accessories for video gaming platforms, above and beyond the effects of game titles. Importantly, the average level of innovativeness and nonalignability of the accessories portfolio, as well as the frequency of introduction of highly innovative and/or nonalignable accessories positively impact the sales of the platform.
Research limitations/implications
This research seeks to address the gap in the innovation literature on the role of discretionary complementary products (i.e. accessories) on platform sales. Future research should examine this in other platform contexts as well.
Practical implications
Managers of platform-mediated products should give due consideration to accessories, as an important driver of the sales of the platforms. Product managers can leverage the advantage of innovative and nonalignable accessories to enhance consumer demand for the platform.
Originality/value
This study is the first to conceptualize and empirically verify the network externality arising from accessories, a heretofore much neglected component of platform-based markets.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the spectrum influence between radon transform and log‐polar transform when rotation and scale effect is eliminated. The average retrieval performance of wavelet and NSCT with different retrieval parameters is also studied.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors designed a multi‐scale and multi‐orientation texture transform spectrum, as well as rotation‐invariant feature vector and its measurement criteria. Then a new two‐level coarse‐to‐fine rotation and scale‐invariant texture retrieval algorithm based on no‐parameter statistic features was proposed. Experiments on VisTex texture database show that the algorithm proposed in this paper is appropriate for main orientation capturing and detail information description.
Findings
According to the experiments results, it was found that the combination of this two‐level progressive retrieval strategy and multi‐scale analysis method can effectively improve retrieval efficiency compared with traditional algorithms and ensure a high precision as well.
Originality/value
The paper presents a novel algorithm for rotation and scale‐invariant texture retrieval.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to improve the retrieval results of hyperspectral image by integrating both spectral and textural features. For this purpose, an improved multiscale opponent representation for hyperspectral texture is proposed to represent the spatial information of the hyperspectral scene.
Design/methodology/approach
In the presented approach, end-member signatures are extracted as spectral features by means of the widely used end-member induction algorithm N-FINDR, and the improved multiscale opponent representation is extracted from the first three principal components of the hyperspectral data based on Gabor filters. Then, the combination similarity between query image and other images in the database is calculated, and the first k more similar images are returned in descending order of the combination similarity.
Findings
Some experiments are calculated using the airborne hyperspectral data of Washington DC Mall. According to the experimental results, the proposed method improves the retrieval results, especially for image categories that have regular textural structures.
Originality/value
The paper presents an effective retrieval method for hyperspectral images.

Abstract
Using two nationally representative samples from 1988 and 1995, this study demonstrates that housing quality in urban China differs across time, housing types, and socioeconomic variables. But some key variables such as Communist Party membership, education, and the total family income are consistent predictors of housing quality across time and housing types. This study indicates that housing quality situations are very complex at the national level. The author concludes that more research into the quality of urban housing is needed, so that the outcomes of housing reform can be better assessed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to restore the spatial distribution of overseas remittance businesses in Shantou during the 1940s. It explores various socioeconomic factors that influenced the concentration of local remittance business investment in real estate. By reconstructing the spatial distribution of remittance business activities in Shantou, this study hopes to lay a foundation for further analysis of the business strategies of Chaoshan merchants.
Design/methodology/approach
This research draws on information from the published Swatow Guide, archival sources and cadastral maps to identify the location of remittance enterprises and the native place and overseas networks of property owners.
Finding
This study reveals that the spatial distribution of the remittance enterprises was determined by the native place origins of local property owners, and that the inflow of overseas Chinese capital contributed to real estate development in Shantou.
Research limitations/implications
Despite the limited access to Chinese official archives, this paper manages to identify several building blocks and neighbors in Shantou for spatial analysis.
Practical implications
This study is the first attempt to use the geographical information system (GIS) method in Chinese urban history research and hopes to establish a larger historical database of Shantou as a sample for comparison.
Originality/value
This investigation advances the spatial study of urban history and overseas Chinese remittances in the maritime society of South China.
