Abstract

Purpose

As China’s industrial structure continues to upgrade and optimize, the consumption capacity of rural residents gradually improves and the role of consumption in economic growth is increasingly prominent. Against the background of weak external demand, the untapped potential of rural consumption has become a key force in expanding domestic demand. As one of the important means that the government has long relied on, fiscal support for agriculture has played a crucial role in activating the rural consumer market. This manuscript aims to explore the impact of local fiscal support for agricultural expenditure (FSAE) on rural consumption in China, as well as to examine the mediating role of the level of rural financial development.

Design/methodology/approach

In this manuscript, the authors use the provincial panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2020. The data of all variables mainly come from China Statistical Yearbook and China Rural Statistical Yearbook. According to the variable selection above, 651 sample data of 31 provinces and cities across China from 2000 to 2020 are organized. In terms of methodology, multiple fixed-effects panel model is applied to regression.

Findings

Firstly, FSAE varies significantly, while rural consumption slowly but steadily rises, with a relatively stable consumption structure. Secondly, FSAE has a significant positive effect on rural consumption. Thirdly, mediation testing indicates that mechanisms such as income, uncertainty and financial development have significant positive mediating effects on rural consumption. Thirdly, there is evident regional heterogeneity in FSAE’s impact on rural consumption. The Western regions, under government fiscal support, show a more significant effect on the elevation of rural consumption levels, while the role of FSAE in optimizing the consumption structure of rural residents in eastern and central regions is more pronounced.

Originality/value

Firstly, a systematic examination of local FSAE and rural consumption has been conducted, enriching relevant theories. Secondly, utilizing econometric empirical methods to research the relationship between local FSAE and rural consumption provides an exploratory extension to empirical studies on rural consumption in China. This offers empirical evidence for local fiscal support in agricultural development and the promotion of rural consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to introduce an innovative framework for mining tourism reviews that not only excels in sentiment analysis accuracy but also prioritizes user-friendly design for enhanced usability.

Design/methodology/approach

Online reviews of China’s Five Sacred Mountains were analyzed using an integrated methodology. Sentiment analysis was performed using ChatGPT, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) and convolutional neural networks, with ChatGPT demonstrating superior performance. Latent Dirichlet allocation extracted key attributes. Models including importance–performance analysis (IPA), asymmetric impact-performance analysis (AIPA) and importance–performance competitor analysis (IPCA) then synthesized findings.

Findings

The results demonstrate that ChatGPT outperforms both machine learning and lexicon-based models in sentiment recognition, exhibiting performance comparable to that of the BERT model. In the case study, integrating sentiment analysis outcomes with IPA reveals deficiencies in both topics and attributes. Moreover, the synergistic combination of IPA, AIPA and IPCA furnishes actionable recommendations for resource management and enables nuanced monitoring of sustainability attributes.

Practical implications

Leveraging this framework in conjunction with the ChatGPT platform for application development can bring practical convenience to the tourism industry. It supports sentiment analysis, topic categorization and opinion mining. Equipped with monitoring capabilities, it provides valuable insights for sustainable improvement, aiding managers in formulating effective marketing strategies.

Originality/value

This research develops a novel multimodel framework integrating various ML/DL techniques and business models in a synergistic way. It provides an innovative and highly accurate yet simple approach to tourism review mining and enhances accessibility of advanced artificial intelligence for sustainable tourism monitoring, addressing limitations of prior methods.

Abstract

Purpose

Environmental and health concerns are considered the most significant motivations for organic food purchasing behaviour (OFP). This study focuses on the roles of health and environmental concerns in OFP in China, aiming to explore whether there are differences in the effects and mechanisms of these two concerns.

Design/methodology/approach

We use the PLS-SEM to conduct empirical tests, drawing from survey data collected from 628 Chinese consumers.

Findings

The results showed that the OFP was influenced differently by health and environmental concerns. Specifically, the total effect of environmental concern on OFP outweighs that of health concern, whereas the opposite is true for direct impacts. Additionally, environmental and health concerns can influence OFP through attitude and subjective norms, although the specific mechanisms vary. Environmental concern affects OFP more through subjective norms, whereas health concern affects OFP mainly through attitude. Meanwhile, functional value quality was a significant moderator that enhanced the indirect effect of motivation on OFP.

Originality/value

A theoretical framework is constructed to explore the role of two types of motivations in OFP within emerging economies like China, revealing their mechanism and interaction effect with functional values.

Abstract

Purpose

The empirical results of the pivotal relationship between big data analytics capability (BDAC) and firm innovation remain inconclusive, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the mediator and moderator through which firms can realize the potential innovation benefits of BDAC. Invoking the indirect perspective of dynamic capability theory, we constructed a moderated mediation model in which organizational learning mediates the impact of BDAC on firm innovation; the mediation effect of organizational learning is contingent upon market orientation.

Design/methodology/approach

Our hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression and bootstrapping methods with a sample of 227 large- and medium-sized manufacturing firms in China.

Findings

The results reveal that both exploratory and exploitative learning fully mediate the link between BDAC and firm innovation. The mediation effect of exploitative learning is positively contingent upon market orientation; however, market orientation does not positively moderate the mediation effect of exploratory learning.

Originality/value

Our moderated mediation model is one of the first to provide a fine-grained understanding of the process through which BDAC is transformed into firm innovation as well as the conditions under which this mediating mechanism may work effectively, thereby further elucidating the theoretical black box regarding the BDAC-firm innovation link and resolving existing debates in the literature regarding why BDAC does not always yield positive outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to offer an alternative explanation for inconclusive results in the existing literature on the information sharing-firm performance link by examining a moderated mediation model in which operations capabilities mediate the interactive effects of information sharing and market intelligence responsiveness on firm performance within a supply chain context. Drawing on the indirect view of dynamic capability theory, the authors propose that information sharing redeploys and reconfigures operations capabilities, thus leading to superior firm performance, even with a high level of market intelligence responsiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

The hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression and bootstrapping methods with a sample of 154 Chinese manufacturing firms. A survey-based, two-informant design was used to collect data.

Findings

The results revealed that operations capabilities fully mediate the relationship between information sharing and firm performance. The information sharing-operations capabilities link is positively moderated by market intelligence responsiveness. Moreover, operations capabilities positively mediate the interactive effects of information sharing and responsiveness on performance.

Originality/value

The study shifts the research focus from the moderating effect of market intelligence responsiveness in the information sharing-performance link to the interactive effects between information sharing and responsiveness on performance via operations capabilities, thus offering a finer-grained picture of the essential information sharing-performance link. To the best of our knowledge, this study is among the first to advocate and substantiate the theoretical claim that even with a high level of responsiveness, a firm’s performance relies on its operations capabilities, which are renewed and enhanced by information sharing, rather than on information sharing itself.

Abstract

Purpose

During the centennial anniversary of Xinhai Revolution in 2011, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television supported the production of 1911 for celebrating such an important event that lead to the rise of the Republic of China in the contemporary Chinese history. This paper aims to reflect upon this film in relation to China’s propagation of “Greater China” for the Empire-building project.

Design/methodology/approach

By scrutinizing the film text and following the strait controversies over the film, this paper demonstrates how the Chinese Communist agents employed the coproduction model with Hong Kong for globalizing a cinematic discourse of Greater China in part of their Empire-building project.

Findings

The study challenges how contemporary Chinese history is ideologically and politically manipulated for advancing the Chinese Communist propaganda over Taiwan. The overall objective is to reflect upon the longstanding historical divergences that stand on the current geopolitical envision and strategy of China for reunification.

Originality/value

This paper provides an interdisciplinary reflection upon the intricate post-Cold War politics in part of the contemporary Chinese cinema under the China–Hong Kong coproduction model. The findings advance novel and timely insights into China’s current envision and strategy for reunification.

Abstract

Purpose

The former residences of historical figures are typical landscape elements of historic districts, which are characterised by the styles of these residences and spiritual historical figures cultures. The purpose of this paper is to determine how the former residences respond once the historical figures living there have passed.

Design/methodology/approach

The history of human culture and progression of urban construction – which are submerged in societal transformation – is recorded for old Beijing city. Narrative space theory is used and methods such as a content analysis, map overlay and the Geographic Information System are employed to analyse the selected 300 former residences of historical figures in old Beijing city.

Findings

The results are as follows: the political setting played a key role in the evolution process, three political narrative areas in the inner city and one cultural narrative area in the outer city form the narrative spatial structure of the former residences of historical figures, “government construction” and “resident construction” are the main reasons for the loss and destruction of narrative spaces and ordinary life is an important channel for showcasing the history of former residences. The narrative spaces of these residences carry double histories, namely, the development of human history and of city construction.

Originality/value

Different from former studies that focus on the preservation of the single historical building, this study explores the integral logic of historic buildings in the whole city through narrative space theory to get a combination of culture and space.
