Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

Abstract

The first part of this paper presents an incremental variational principle and an incremental finite element in time‐space domain for the analysis of large amplitude, periodic vibration of multilayer sandwich plates. A reduced basis composed of eigenvectors corresponding to linear free vibration is introduced to reduce the order of the resulting linearized equations governing the non‐linear motion which are solved incrementally in association with Newton‐Raphson iterative method and an extrapolating technique. In the second part the solution techniques are described in detail and a number of examples on various non‐linear responses of rectangular multilayer sandwich plates, including superharmonic, subharmonic and internal resonance, are included in the study. Viscous modal damping is also considered when the structure is under forced excitation.

Abstract

Since China initiated its “go global” policy that promotes its overseas investment, China’s Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) has increased almost twenty times during the last 10 years, reaching $55.9 billion in 2008. The issue of internationalization of Chinese OFDI has attracted increasing attention of researchers from a business perspective. This article systematically reviews the previous studies on overseas investments by Chinese MNEs and discusses the characteristics of Chinese internationalization behavior at both firm level and country level. The internationalization of Chinese companies cannot be understood as a simple game of “catch up” with established MNEs, and more firm‐level empirical studies should be carried out on how these characteristics influence firms’ strategic decisions.

Abstract

A simple numerical algorithm is developed for the implementation of the harmonic balance method to analyse periodic responses of a general dynamic system having geometrical non‐linearities of the quadratic and cubic types. The resulting non‐linear algebraic equations which are not explicitly determined are solved by non‐linear equation routines available in most mathematical libraries. Various non‐linear responses, such as the combinational resonances of a hinged‐clamped beam, the non‐linear effect on degenerate vibration modes of a square plate and the non‐linear oscillation of thin rings, are presented to demonstrate the versatility of the algorithm.

Abstract

Based on the orthogonal approach for hybrid element methods, refined three‐dimensional isoparametric hybrid hexahedral elements have been developed. The behaviour of the proposed models are discussed in respect of coordinate invariance, spurious zero energy modes and the ability to pass the patch test. By adopting the orthogonality of strain energy, the element stiffness matrix can be decomposed into a series of stiffness matrices in which the implementational effectiveness can be improved. A number of examples is used to demonstrate the implementation efficiency, accuracy and distortion insensitivity of the proposed elements, and its capacity of handling nearly incompressible materials

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the pandemic’s impact on house rents by applying a rental gradient analysis to compare the pre-and post-COVID-19 periods in Auckland. The micro-level household census data from the Integrated Data Infrastructure of Statistics New Zealand is also applied to scrutinise this WFH trend as a robustness check.

Design/methodology/approach

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, work-from-home (WFH) and e-commerce have become much more common in many cities. Many news reports have contended that households are leaving city centres and moving into bigger and better houses in the suburbs or rural areas. This emerging trend has been redefining the traditional theory of residential location choices. Proximity to central business district (CBD) is no longer the most critical consideration in choosing one’s residence. WFH and e-commerce flatten the traditional bid rent curve from the city centre.

Findings

The authors examined micro-level housing rental listings in 242 suburbs of the Auckland Region from January 2013 to December 2021 (108 months) and found that the hedonic price gradient models suggest that there has been a trend of rental gradient flattening and that its extent was almost doubled in 2021. Rents are also found to be increasing more in lower-density suburbs.

Research limitations/implications

The results imply that the pandemic has accelerated the trend of WFH and e-commerce. The authors further discuss whether the trend will be a transient phenomenon or a long-term shift.

Practical implications

Suppose an organisation is concerned about productivity and performance issues due to a companywide ability to WFH. In that case, some standard key performance indicators for management and employees could be implemented. Forward-thinking cities need to focus on attracting skilful workers by making WFH a possible solution, not by insisting on the primacy of antiquated nine-to-five office cultures.

Social implications

WFH has traditionally encountered resistance, but more and more companies are adopting WFH policies in this post-COVID era. The early rental gradient and the micro-level household data analysis all confirm that the WFH trend is emerging and will likely be a long-term shift. Instead of resisting the change, organisations should improve their remote work policies and capabilities for this WFH trend.

Originality/value

So far, empirical studies of post-COVID urban restructuring have been limited. This study aims to empirically test such an urban metamorphosis by identifying the spatial and temporal impacts of COVID on house rental gradients in the Auckland Region, New Zealand. The authors apply rental gradient analysis to test this urban restructuring hypothesis because the method considers the spatial-temporal differences, i.e. a difference-in-differences between pre-and post-pandemic period against the distance measured from the city centre. The method can control for the spatial difference and the endogeneity involved.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the meshless local exponential basis functions (MLEBF) method to the case of nonlinear and linear, variable coefficient partial differential equations (PDEs).

Design/methodology/approach

The original version of MLEBF method is limited to linear, constant coefficient PDEs. The reason is that exponential bases which satisfy the homogeneous operator can only be determined for this class of problems. To extend this method to the general case of linear PDEs, the variable coefficients along with all involved derivatives are first expanded. This expanded form is evaluated at the center of each cloud, and is assumed to be constant over the entire cloud. The solution procedure is followed as in the former version. Nonlinear problems are first converted to a succession of linear, variable coefficient PDEs using the Newton-Kantorovich scheme and are subsequently solved using the aforementioned approach until convergence is achieved.

Findings

The results obtained show good performance of the method as solution to a wide range of problems. The results are compared with the well-known methods in the literature such as the finite element method, high-order finite difference method or variants of the boundary element method.

Originality/value

The MLEBF method is a simple yet effective tool for analyzing various kinds of problems. It is easy to implement with high parallelization potential. The proposed method addresses the biggest limitation of the method, and extends it to linear, variable coefficient PDEs as well as nonlinear ones.

Abstract

Purpose

A higher-order Reissner-Mindlin plate element method is presented based on the framework of assumed stress quasi-conforming method and Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. A novel six-node triangular plate element is proposed by utilizing this method for the static and free vibration analysis of Reissner-Mindlin plates.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the initial assumed stress field is derived by using the fundamental analytical solutions which satisfy all governing equations. Then the stress matrix is treated as the weighted function to weaken the strain-displacement equations after the strains are derived by using the constitutive equations. Finally, the arbitrary order Timoshenko beam function is adopted as the string-net functions along each side of the element for strain integration.

Findings

The proposed element can pass patch test and is free from shear locking and spurious zero energy modes. Numerical tests show that the element can give high-accurate solutions, good convergence and is a good competitor to other models.

Originality/value

This work gives new formulations to develop high-order Reissner-Mindlin plate element, and the new strategy exhibits advantages of both analytical and discrete methods.
