Abstract

Purpose

The public's trust in the authorities has a great impact on people's perception and cognition on development of different types of urban transport infrastructure projects (UTIPs). Given the importance of public acceptance for the efficient construction and operation of UTIPs, this study aims at investigating the personal and environmental factors that influence public acceptance behavior from the perspective of stakeholder management.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on social cognitive theory (SCT), this study explores the multiple dimensions of social trust on public acceptance in the development of UTIPs by a comparative case study. Two types of UTIPs, a metro railway and a bridge in the Wuhan City, China, were selected as cases, with a questionnaire distributed among the public to collect their sense of trust towards the development of these projects. The data were analyzed through structural equation modeling (SEM).

Findings

This study reveals that social trust positively influences public acceptance, directly or indirectly through perceived benefit and -risks and self-efficacy. However, the emphasis on social trust about competence and integrity of the authorities varies with the types of projects. Self-efficacy worked as the “mirror of trust” reflecting people's attitude towards social trust in the authorities on their ability and morality.

Originality/value

The value of the paper lies in discussing social trust from multiple dimensions in the field of urban infrastructures, which provides new insights into specific mechanisms for shaping public acceptance in project management towards the development of UTIPs.

Abstract

On the basis of the research data of 120 enterprises from 10 development zones in Gansu Province, we conducted regional planning research combining enterprise architecture with ecological green space environment system. We determined that the largest part of the green space pattern is the “other green space,” which mainly depends on the formation of super large plantation. However, this part is consistently decreasing in recent years. Affiliated green space became the largest in the green space patterns because of the high degree of vertical greening of the enterprise architecture in the development zones. The high fragmentation of the affiliated green space also leads to the high fragmentation of the entire green space of the development zone. In future regional planning of development zones, future planning of the green space can take the current green space as the basis, use the road green space and green corridors nearby waters as the basic framework to connect other patterns of green space, and form a ring-shaped enclosure, reticular structure, and wedge-shaped and dotted supplemented regional pattern. Meanwhile, the road green space system can be reasonably arranged by setting new green space spots at road intersections and key strategic positions to connect the isolated green space patches and improve the connectivity of the green space.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use an ionic liquid (IL, [HMIM]PF6) to improve the lubrication performance of liquid metal (LM) as a lithium grease additive and to expand the application range of LM.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the different mass ratios of [HMIM]PF6/LM mixtures were added into the lithium grease on a four-ball tribo-meter to investigate the effects of its tribological behavior. Scanning electron mircoscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to reveal the anti-wear and friction-reducing mechanism of the additives.

Findings

When the load was used at 461 N, the average coefficient of friction (ACOF) and average wear scar diameter (AWSD) of steel ball Lubricated with grease with an optimal ratio of 2:3 ([HMIM]PF6/LM) were reduced by 32.8% and 30.5%, respectively. Friction and wear mechanisms are ascribed to friction-induced additive components that can simultaneously form a composite lubrication film consisting of FePO4, FeF3, Ga2O3, In2O3 and SnO2.

Research limitations/implications

Compared with the pure lithium-based grease, when [HMIM]PF6/LM was added with an optimal ratio of 2:3, the ACOF and AWSD were reduced by 12.4% from 0.097 to 0.085 and 23.8% from 552.117 µm to 420.590 µm under 392 N, respectively. When at 461 N, the ACOF and AWSD of steel ball were reduced by 32.8% from 0.122 to 0.082 and 30.5% from 715.714 µm to 497.472 µm, respectively. It was shown that the simultaneous addition of LM and [HMIM]PF6 can form a composite lubrication film consisting of FePO4, FeF3, Ga2O3, In2O3 and SnO2.

Originality/value

In this paper, [HMIM]P F6 is added with LM simultaneously to improve the lubrication properties of lithium grease, and expand the application scope of LM.

Abstract

Purpose

Metro stations have become a crucial aspect of urban rail transportation, integrating facilities, equipment and pedestrians. Impractical physical layout designs and pedestrian psychology impact the effectiveness of an evacuation during a metro fire. Prior research on emergency evacuation has overlooked the complexity of metro stations and failed to adequately consider the physical heterogeneity of stations and pedestrian psychology. Therefore, this study aims to develop a comprehensive evacuation optimization strategy for metro stations by applying the concept of design for safety (DFS) to an emergency evacuation. This approach offers novel insights into the management of complex systems in metro stations during emergencies.

Design/methodology/approach

Physical and social factors affecting evacuations are identified. Moreover, the social force model (SFM) is modified by combining the fire dynamics model (FDM) and considering pedestrians' impatience and panic psychology. Based on the Nanjing South Metro Station, a multiagent-based simulation (MABS) model is developed. Finally, based on DFS, optimization strategies for metro stations are suggested.

Findings

The most effective evacuation occurs when the width of the stairs is 3 meters and the transfer corridor is 14 meters. Additionally, a luggage disposal area should be set up. The exit strategy of the fewest evacuees is better than the nearest-exit strategy, and the staff in the metro station should guide pedestrians correctly.

Originality/value

Previous studies rarely consider metro stations as sociotechnical systems or apply DFS to proactively reduce evacuation risks. This study provides a new perspective on the evacuation framework of metro stations, which can guide the designers and managers of metro stations.
