Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a deep-learning-based beamforming method for phased array weather radars, especially whose antenna arrays are equipped with large number of elements, for fast and accurate detection of weather observations.

Design/methodology/approach

The beamforming weights are computed by a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is trained with input–output pairs obtained from the Wiener solution.

Findings

To validate the robustness of the CNN-based beamformer, it is compared with the traditional beamforming methods, namely, Fourier (FR) beamforming and Capon beamforming. Moreover, the CNN is compared with a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) which is a shallow type of neural network. It is shown that the CNN method has an excellent performance in radar signal simulations compared to the other methods. In addition to simulations, the robustness of the CNN beamformer is further validated by using real weather data collected by the phased array radar at Osaka University (PAR@OU) and compared to, besides the FR and RBFNN methods, the minimum mean square error beamforming method. It is shown that the CNN has the ability to rapidly and accurately detect the reflectivity of the PAR@OU with even less clutter level in comparison to the other methods.

Originality/value

Motivated by the inherit advantages of the CNN, this paper proposes the development of a CNN-based approach to the beamforming of PAR using both simulated and real data. In this paper, the CNN is trained on the optimum weights of Wiener solution. In simulations, it is applied on a large 32 × 32 planar phased array antenna. Moreover, it is operated on real data collected by the PAR@OU.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the critical technology development of avian radar system at airports.

Design/methodology/approach

After the origin of avian radar technology is discussed, the target characteristics of flying birds are analyzed, including the target echo amplitude, flight speed, flight height, trajectory and micro-Doppler. Four typical airport avian radar systems of Merlin, Accipiter, Robin and CAST are introduced. The performance of different modules such as antenna, target detection and tracking, target recognition and classification, analysis of bird information together determines the detection ability of avian radar. The performances and key technologies of the ubiquitous avian radar are summarized and compared with other systems, and their applications, deployment modes, as well as their advantages and disadvantages are introduced and analyzed.

Findings

The ubiquitous avian radar achieves the long-time integration of target echoes, which greatly improves detection and classification ability of the targets of birds or drones, even under strong background clutter at airport. In addition, based on the big data of bird situation accumulated by avian radar, the rules of bird activity around the airport can be mined to guide the bird avoidance work.

Originality/value

This paper presented a novel avian radar system based on ubiquitous digital radar technology. The authors’ experience has confirmed that this system can be effective for airport bird strike prevention and management. In the future, the avian radar system will see continued improvement in both software and hardware, as the system is designed to be easily extensible.

In UK patent 2264469 ERC Co. Ltd describe a dirigible mooring tower. It comprises a base structure and a tower structure. The base structure includes an apparatus for supplying helium into a dirigible moored by the mooring tower, an apparatus for supplying fuel into engines of the dirigible, a bus terminal and an inspection/repair room. A boarding unit is connected to the lower portion of the tower proper for pivotal motion about the tower. The boarding unit has a passenger‐loading bridge. Above the boarding unit is located a mooring unit capable of attracting the bow of a dirigible. The mooring unit is also rotatable about the tower. A waiting hall is located above the mooring unit. Abstract

The flight guidance system selected by VFW‐Fokker for use on its VFW‐614 is the FGS‐70 integrated autopilot/flight director system developed by The Bendix Corporation's Navigation & Control Division. It was flight evaluated for the first time aboard the VFW‐614 on November 30, 1972 in Bremen, Germany. The unparalleled success of the first flight on the G3 prototype aircraft was due largely to the coordinated efforts of VFW‐Fokker and Bendix in programming the aircraft stability derivatives on Bendix analog simulators.
