Controlling paint production. Paint users are placing higher demands on the manufacturer. All paint producers should now consider data acquisition — and possibly automated paint manufacturing if the volumes of certain products will justify it.

A new hand‐held Mini Hygrometer, capable of measuring concentrations of water vapour as low as 1 part per million in “dry” air and gas supplies, is now being manufactured and marketed by Offshore Electronics Ltd. of St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands. The new batter‐powered instrument (see photograph) measures only 130 × 65 × 35mm (5.2 × 2.5 × 1.3 in)—a fraction of the size of earlier models.

Additions for use in polyurethane coatings. Angus Chemie GmbH has announced the introduction of two new additions to its product line for polyurethane coatings. Zoldine RD‐20 Reactive Diluent is designed to replace higher viscosity polyols in high solids polyurethane coatings. Zoldine MS‐Plus Moisture Scavenger eliminates bubbles, pinholes, downglossing and hazing in polyurethane coatings to allow for fast cure times in all types of weather.

Brookfield Viscometers Ltd, a leading supplier of viscometry and rheometry equipment, has recently launched a new range of Constant Temperature Baths and Coolers for use with its range of instruments.

Basazol (R) Red 72 L Basazol Red 72 L, supplied by BASF, is a new low‐viscosity basic dye. It is used mainly to dye paper made from wood‐containing pulp and recycled paper in the acid‐to‐neutral pH range. It can be used at the wet end and in surface dyeing.

Lightweight Oil‐Eater absorbs, it is claimed oil and chemical‐based liquids faster and more effectively than traditional clay granules.

A new anti‐condensation hygienic coating for ceilings and upper walls, which prevents the formation of water droplets by absorbing moisture, is being marketed by Rust‐Oleum International, Roosendaal, The Netherlands. Once dry, 1 litre of applied coating will absorb at least 400g or moisture.
