Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a global adaptive direct slicing technique of Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS)-based sculptured surface for rapid prototyping where the NURBS representation is directly extracted from the computer-aided design (CAD) model. The imported NURBS surface is directly sliced to avoid inaccuracies due to tessellation methods used in common practice. The major objective is to globally optimize texture error function based on the available range of layer thicknesses of the utilized rapid prototyping machine. The total texture error is computed with the defined error function to verify slicing efficiency of this global adaptive slicing algorithm and to find the optimum number of slices. A variety of experiments are conducted to study the accuracy of the developed procedure, and the results are compared with previously developed algorithms.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a new adaptive algorithm which globally optimizes a texture error function produced by staircase effect for a user-defined number of layers. The adaptive slicing algorithm dynamically calculates optimized slicing thicknesses based on the rapid prototyping machine’s specifications to minimize the texture error function. This paper also compares the results of implementing the developed methodology with the results of previously developed algorithms and presents cost-effective optimum slicing layer thicknesses.

Findings

A new methodology for global adaptive direct slicing algorithm of CAD models, based on a texture error function for the final product and the possible layer thicknesses in rapid prototyping, has been developed and implemented. Comparing the results of implementation with the common practice for several case studies shows that the proposed approach has greater slicing efficiency. Typically, by utilizing this approach, the number of prototyping layers can be reduced by 20-50 per cent compared to the slicing with other algorithms, while maintaining or improving the accuracy of the final manufactured surfaces. Therefore, the developed slicing method provides a better solution to trade-off between the rapid prototyping time and the rapid prototyping accuracy. For the many advantages of global direct slicing, it can be seen as the future solution to the slicing process in rapid prototyping systems.

Originality/value

This paper presents an innovative approach in direct global adaptive slicing of the additive manufacturing parts. The novel definition of an error function which comprehensively addresses the resulting manufactured surface quality of the entire product allows presenting an objective function to solve and to find the optimum selection of all the layer thicknesses during the slicing process.

Abstract

Purpose

There are often calls for more focus on outcomes in Children’s Social Care yet there is little consensus on what these outcomes should be. Key challenges include who should decide what outcomes should be measured and the sheer range of issues that social workers deal with. The purpose of this paper is to provide a reflective account of approaches to measuring outcomes that the author has used in recent studies in order to illustrate the complexity involved in understanding what the purpose of Children’s Social Care is and therefore how outcomes might be measured.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of and reflection on lessons from recent research studies carried out by the author and colleagues.

Findings

The results are used to illustrate and support an argument that Children’s Social Care performs multiple functions and that this has implications for thinking about outcomes. Helping children and parents is one element of the work, but assessing risk across large numbers of referrals and identifying those that require involvement is equally important. Furthermore, the social work role requires complex considerations around liberty and the rights of parents and children. One consequence of this is that the quality of the service provided is important in its own right.

Research limitations/implications

It is suggested that the evaluation of Children’s Social Care involves four types of outcomes: measures of the quality of the service provided; assessment of whether the “right” families are being worked with; client-defined measures of change; and the development of appropriate standardised instruments. Examples of approaches in each area are discussed.

Practical implications

The theoretical considerations suggest that we need to have a multi-dimensional approach to evaluating, inspecting and leading Children’s Social Care services. In particular, the importance of the quality of delivery and appropriate targeting of the service are emphasised, as well as considering various approaches to measuring outcomes.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a combination of qualitative and quantitative measures of process, assessment and outcomes for evaluating outcomes in Children’s Social Care.

This paper presents the major findings of recently completed research in the UK concerning the attributes of information as an asset and its impact on organisational performance. The research study employed an automated information asset- and attribute-scoring grid exercise and semi-structured open-ended interviews with 45 senior UK managers in four case study organisations. The information asset-scoring grid was developed to provide a simple visual representation of information assets and attributes using Excel charts. The semi-structured open-ended interviews aimed to identify the attributes of information assets considered significant by 45 senior UK managers and to explore relevant issues such as the value of information and organisational effectiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

To better respond to today’s volatile and changing fashion market, the purpose of this paper is to develop a web-based design support system that enables users to design realistic and interesting skirts in the form of technical sketches over the internet.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed system mainly consists of a sketch representation and composing method (SRCM), a graphic user interface (GUI) and a controller. The SRCM is implemented at the server end that generates technical sketches according to user defined parameters and features via the web-based GUI at the client side. The controller manages the workflows between the server and the clients.

Findings

To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed system, a survey was conducted by inviting 30 subjects (professional designers or undergraduate students studying fashion design) to have trial run of the system in Hong Kong and in the USA. Positive comments and feedbacks were received, and valuable suggestions were also obtained in regard to the prototype system.

Originality/value

Compared with traditional computer-aided design (CAD) systems, the proposed system is more effective and easier to operate as users can create technical sketches in accurate proportions with simple computer operations in a few mouse clicks. Besides, the output sketches are fully compatible with most commercial CAD software. The system is developed based on web technologies, thus fashion sketches can be easily designed using any computer connected to the internet; it can be implemented on Android or iOS platform in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The simulations of grid-resolved rod vortex generators (RVGs) require high computational cost and time. Additionally, the computational mesh topology must be adjusted to rods geometries. The purpose of this study is to propose the new source term model for RVG.

Design/methodology/approach

The model was proposed by modification of Bender, Anderson, Yagle (BAY) model used to predict flows around different type of vortex generators (VGs) – vanes. Original BAY model was built on lifting line theory. The proposed model was implemented in ANSYS Fluent by means of the user-defined function technique. Additional momentum and energy sources are imposed to transport equations.

Findings

The computational results of source term model were validated against experimental data and numerical simulation results for grid-resolved rod. It was shown that modified BAY model can be successfully used for RVG in complex cases. An example of BAY model application for RVG on transonic V2C airfoil with strongly oscillating shock waves is presented. Aerodynamic performance predicted numerically by means of both approaches (grid resolved RVG and modeled) is in good agreement, what indicates application opportunity of the proposed model to complex cases.

Practical implications

Modified BAY model can be used to simulate the influence of RVGs in complex real cases. It allows for time/cost reduction if the location or distribution of RVG has to be optimized on a profile, wing or in the channel.

Originality/value

In the paper, the new modification of BAY model was proposed to simulate RVGs. The presented results are innovative because of original approach to model RVGs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a method for improving the state estimation of a robot in the presence of noise measurement, which can improve the performance of the robot controller.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, a novel nonlinear tracking differentiator (NTD) was formulated to solve the problems of phase lag, low stability and amplitude attenuation faced by traditional tracking differentiators, which can be used for the state estimation of a robot. Based on the user-defined function stu() with linear and nonlinear characteristics, the authors establish a new acceleration function of NTD and confirm its global asymptotic stability by using the Lyapunov method and the system equivalence method. Phase plane analysis shows that the origin is its stable nodal point or focus point and uncovers the basic constraint conditions for parameter regulation. In addition, the convergence property and robustness performance against noises are studied by describing function method.

Findings

Comparative simulations, robot state estimation experiments and joint trajectory tracking experiments have indicated that NTD proposed integrates tracking rapidness, accuracy and transitional stability and has high approximation and filtering effects on generalized derivatives of the signal, which contribute to an excellent performance of robot controller in stability and response speed in practice.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this paper lies in the design of a novel NTD, which successfully improves the state estimation of a robot joint in noisy surroundings, the tracking performance of robot controller and the stability of the system.

Abstract

Purpose

Nowadays, automotive engines are controlled by electronic control units (ECUs), and the engine idle speed performance is significantly affected by the setup of control parameters in the ECU. The engine ECU tune‐up is done empirically through tests on a dynamometer (dyno). In this way, a lot of time, fuel and human resources are consumed, while the optimal control parameters may not be obtained. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel ECU setup optimization approach for engine idle speed control.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first phase of the approach, Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) and a multi‐input/output least squares support vector machine (LS‐SVM) is proposed to build up an engine idle speed model based on dyno test data, and then a genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to obtain optimal ECU setting automatically subject to various user‐defined constraints.

Findings

The study shows that the predicted results using the estimated model from LS‐SVM are in good agreement with the actual test results. Moreover, the optimization results show a significant improvement on idle speed performance in a test engine.

Practical implications

As the methodology is generic it can be applied to different vehicle control optimization problems.

Originality/value

The research is the first attempt to integrate a couple of paradigms (LHS, multi‐input/output LS‐SVM and GA) into a general framework for constrained multivariable optimization problems under insufficient system information. The proposed multi‐input/output LS‐SVM for modelling of multi‐input/output systems is original, because the traditional LS‐SVM modelling approach is suitable for multi‐input, but single output systems. Finally, this is the first use of the novel integrated framework for automotive engine idle‐speed control optimization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address a knowledge gap on advocacy outcomes from mental health service users’ perspective, and the implications for evaluating advocacy impact. The studies discussed highlight challenges for measuring the outcomes of advocacy, but underline the importance of doing so, and of involving service users alongside other stakeholders in co-designing evaluation systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses findings from three qualitative studies of independent advocacy involving focus groups and interviews with: 30 African and African Caribbean men who were mental health service users; 90 “qualifying patients” in a study of Independent Mental Health Advocate services; and nine young women in children and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).

Findings

A comparative analysis and synthesis of findings from three studies identifies four common dimensions: how mental health advocacy is conceptualised and understood; how service users define advocacy outcomes; wider impacts; and, user involvement in evaluating advocacy outcomes. Advocacy outcomes were conceptualised as increasing involvement, changing care and treatment and supporting personal development. There was evidence of advocacy acting to empower mental health service users, and of broader impacts on service regimes and policies. However, there was limited evidence of transformational impact. Evaluating advocacy outcomes is increasingly seen as important.

Originality/value

Few researchers have focused primarily on the perspectives of people using independent mental health advocacy, or on the experience of “advocacy as empowerment”, and none have done so across diverse groups. This analysis adds insight into the impact of independent advocacy. Data from empirical studies attest to the important role independent advocacy plays in modern mental health systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new computational framework to address future preliminary design needs for aircraft subsystems. The ability to investigate multiple candidate technologies forming subsystem architectures is enabled with the provision of automated architecture generation, analysis and optimization. Main focus lies with a demonstration of the frameworks workings, as well as the optimizers performance with a typical form of application problem.

Design/methodology/approach

The core aspects involve a functional decomposition, coupled with a synergistic mission performance analysis on the aircraft, architecture and component levels. This may be followed by a complete enumeration of architectures, combined with a user defined technology filtering and concept ranking procedure. In addition, a hybrid heuristic optimizer, based on ant systems optimization and a genetic algorithm, is employed to produce optimal architectures in both component composition and design parameters. The optimizer is tested on a generic architecture design problem combined with modified Griewank and parabolic functions for the continuous space.

Findings

Insights from the generalized application problem show consistent rediscovery of the optimal architectures with the optimizer, as compared to a full problem enumeration. In addition multi-objective optimization reveals a Pareto front with differences in component composition as well as continuous parameters.

Research limitations/implications

This paper demonstrates the frameworks application on a generalized test problem only. Further publication will consider real engineering design problems.

Originality/value

The paper addresses the need for future conceptual design methods of complex systems to consider a mixed concept space of both discrete and continuous nature via automated methods.

Abstract

Management information facilities transform the library management system into a much more effective management tool. Three levels of management can be identified — operational, tactical and strategic — and each of these has its own unique management information needs. Earlier work on the use of management information in libraries and the development of management information systems demonstrates that progress in these areas has been slow. Management information systems comprise three components: facilities for handling ad hoc enquiries; facilities for standard report generation; and management information modules, or report generators that support the production of user‐defined reports. A list of standard reports covering acquisitions, cataloguing, circulation control, serials and inter‐library loans is provided. The functions of report generators are explored and the nature of enquiry facilities reviewed. Management information tools available in library management systems form a valuable aid in decision making. These should be further exploited and further developed.
