Abstract

Purpose

Traffic congestion is becoming a serious problem that has adverse consequences on the socio-economy, environment, and public health of various cities worldwide. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the continuous search for new alternative solutions to prevent or alleviate these concerns. It particularly deals with the development of decision support system based on a data fusion for the management and control of traffic at signalized intersections. The role of such systems is to manage the existing infrastructure to ease congestion and respond to crises. The proposed system is based on multi-detector data fusion, a data processing function that combines imperfect information collected from systems involving several detectors. The developed system is then tested on a virtual junction, and the results obtained are reported and discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a new traffic light control based on multi-detectors data fusion theory. The system uses a new multi-detectors data fusion method for traffic data analysis. Moreover, the system integrates a method for the estimation of the reliability degree of different detectors taking into account their imperfection and the conflict between them. These estimated reliability degrees are combined using Dempster’s rule of combination.

Findings

The paper provides a decision support system for traffic regulation at intersection based on multi-sensors. It suggests the fusion of captured data by many sensors for measuring information. The system use the Belief Functions Theory for information fusion and decision making using combination and decision rules.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a new Adaptive Traffic Control System based on a new data fusion approach that include a method for the estimation of the reliability degree of different detectors taking into account their imperfection and the conflict between them. These estimated reliability degrees are combined using Dempster’s rule of combination.

Abstract

The mathematical models used to describe the dynamical behaviour of a group of closely-spaced road vehicles travelling in a single lane without overtaking are known as car-following models. This paper presents a novel car-following model, which differs from the traditional models by having an equilibrium solution that corresponds to consecutive vehicles having not only zero relative velocity, but also travelling at a certain desired distance apart. This new model is investigated using both numerical and analytical techniques. For many parameter values the equilibrium solution is stable to a periodic perturbation but, for certain parameter values, chaotic motion results. This shows that in congested traffic, even drivers attempting to follow a safe driving strategy, may find themselves driving in an unpredictable fashion.

This paper aims to review the studies on intersection control with connected and automated vehicles (CAVs).

Design/methodology/approach

The most seminal and recent research in this area is reviewed. This study specifically focuses on two categories: CAV trajectory planning and joint intersection and CAV control.

Findings

It is found that there is a lack of widely recognized benchmarks in this area, which hinders the validation and demonstration of new studies.

Originality/value

In this review, the authors focus on the methodological approaches taken to empower intersection control with CAVs. The authors hope the present review could shed light on the state-of-the-art methods, research gaps and future research directions.

Abstract

Purpose

In urban planning, sustainability is closely linked to the quality of urban public spaces (UPS). However, some UPS encounter issues of low attractiveness and underutilisation. Vitality serves as a crucial measure in this context. The research perspective on the vitality of UPS centres on the balance between human activities and the built environment. Therefore, this article aims to systematically review critical aspects of UPS vitality evaluation system, including research objects, vitality components and research methods, from the dimensions of crowd activity and the built environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review using PRISMA analysed English-language publications from 2008 to 2023 in Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases, employing keywords related to UPS and vitality, with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Findings

(1) Research objects, including parks, squares, waterfronts, blocks and streets. (2) The factors contributing to crowd activity characteristics originate from five dimensions, namely spatial, temporal, visitor, activity and feedback. Environmental factors, both external (accessibility, surrounding function mix and population density) and internal (service facility mix and water presence), significantly impact vitality. (3) The study primarily relies on quantitative data, including traditional surveys and emerging significant data sources like dynamic location and traffic, social media, geospatial and point of interest (POI) data. Data analysis methods commonly used include correlation analysis and comprehensive evaluation techniques.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the vitality evaluation system for UPS from multiple perspectives for urban planners, aiding in identifying key factors and research methods in the vitality evaluation of various types of UPS.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse vertical integration in the rail sector using a combination of transaction cost economics (TCE), the resource-based view (RBV) and the relational view, through which rail wagons are viewed as “relationship specific assets”.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical analysis is based on a cross-case comparison of four case studies of intermodal operators in Europe, each exhibiting different levels of collaboration and integration between terminals, operators and sub-contractors.

Findings

Viewing rail wagons as relationship specific assets rather than merely transaction specific (TCE) or firm specific (RBV) demonstrates that wagon ownership is not only a good indicator of the level of vertical cooperation but of the existence of trust and learning within a collaborative environment.

Practical implications

The organisational setup is not derived purely from transaction or resource characteristics, but by the integration of processes through the purchase of assets that will be used to produce a service, with the expected levels of trust and commitment. In this sense, the role of the wagon as a relationship specific asset is a microcosm of the key elements of a successful intermodal transport system.

Originality/value

As one of the key operational aspects of the rail sector is the use of expensive equipment and the relative responsibility for fixed and moveable assets, an analysis of the use of rail wagons as relationship specific assets allows a more dynamic understanding of vertical integration in the rail sector than currently provided by TCE or RBV alone.

Abstract

The paper considers a discrete-time, Markov, stochastic process model of drivers' day-to-day evolving route choice, the evolving ‘state’ of such a system being governed by the traffic interactions between vehicles, and the adaptive behaviour of drivers in response to previous travel experiences. An approximating deterministic process is proposed, by approximating both the probability distribution of previous experiences—the “memory filter”—and the conditional distribution of future choices. This approximating process includes both flow means and variances as state variables. Existence and uniqueness of fixed points of this process are examined, and an example used to contrast these with conventional stochastic equilibrium models. The elaboration of this approach to networks of an arbitrary size is discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This research paper aims to investigate the effects of gradual deployment of market penetration rates (MPR) of connected vehicles (MPR of CVs) on delay time and fuel consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

A real-world origin-destination demand matrix survey was conducted in Boston, MA to identify the number of peak hour passing vehicles in the case study.

Findings

The results showed that as the number of CVs (MPR) in the network increases, the total delay time decreases by an average of 14% and the fuel consumption decreases by an average of 56%, respectively, from scenarios 3 to 15 compared to scenario 2.

Research limitations/implications

The first limitation of this study was considering a small network. The considered network shows a small part of the case study.

Originality/value

This study can be a milestone for future research regarding gradual deployment of CVs’ effects on transport networks. Efficient policy(s) may define based on the results of this network for Brockton transport network.
