THE College of Librarianship is best considered on its own terms, as an institution unique in the history and present pattern of British library education, but its significance and probable future development can best be assessed if two external factors are kept in mind.

The leading traditions of Western ethical thought offer an immense collection of concepts and distinctions for thinking about how to make professional and personal decisions across any walk of life. In this chapter we consider how to draw from this vast terrain to provide a set of practical ethical guidelines for global business decision-making. Our aim is not to provide an historical survey of ethics but to identify some of the most useful ideas and distinctions across various ethical traditions that have survived the test of time and to suggest adaptable practical recommendations. We present four digestible ethical guidelines to bridge the theoretical traditions with the everyday world of time-sensitive business decision-making. These guidelines have versatile applications across an array of business applications and can also be useful for policymakers and decision-makers in not-for-profit organizations.

Presents 31 case studies, including the success of Japan in microchips to the failure of Xerox to sell its invention of the Alto personal computer 3 years before Apple: from the success in DNA and Superconductor research to the success of Sunbeam in inventing and marketing food processors: and from the daring invention and production of atomic energy for survival to the successes of sewing machine inventor Howe in co‐operating on patents to compete in markets. Includes 306 questions and answers in order to qualify concepts introduced.

The main theme of this chapter is raising awareness and improving insights and planning abilities in relation to problems faced by people of colour, as individuals and in institutions. In promoting these skills, there is a need to recognize the role played by personal perceptions and emotions in the way in which we construe problems. Here, the author presents a personal construct psychology (Kelly, 1955, Ravenette, 1997) derived approach, which offers a way through the conceptual confusion clouding our thinking about aspects of our lives that concern us, and often leaves us lacking the energy and ability to loosen our thinking and move in the direction of rewarding new attitudes and behaviours.
