Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to present the effectiveness and robustness of a numerical algorithm based on the block Newton method for the nonlinear kinematic hardening rules adopted in modeling ductile materials.
Design/methodology/approach
Elastoplastic problems can be defined as a coupled problem of the equilibrium equation for the overall structure and the yield equations for the stress state at every material point. When applying the Newton method to the coupled residual equations, the displacement field and the internal variables, which represent the plastic deformation, are updated simultaneously.
Findings
The presented numerical scheme leads to an explicit form of the hardening behavior, which includes the evolution of the equivalent plastic strain and the back stress, with the internal variables. The features of the present approach allow the displacement field and the hardening behavior to be updated straightforwardly. Thus, the scheme does not have any local iterative calculations and enables us to simultaneously decrease the residuals in the coupled boundary value problems.
Originality/value
A pseudo-stress for the local residual and an algebraically derived consistent tangent are applied to elastic-plastic boundary value problems with nonlinear kinematic hardening. The numerical procedure incorporating the block Newton method ensures a quadratic rate of asymptotic convergence of a computationally efficient solution scheme. The proposed algorithm provides an efficient and robust computation in the elastoplastic analysis of ductile materials. Numerical examples under elaborate loading conditions demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the numerical scheme implemented in the finite element analysis.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to create a numerical technique to tackle the challenge of selecting software reliability growth models (SRGMs).
Design/methodology/approach
A real-time case study with five SRGMs tested against a set of four selection indexes were utilised to show the functionality of TOPSIS approach. As a result of the current research, rating of the different SRGMs is generated based on their comparative closeness.
Findings
An innovative approach has been developed to generate the current SRGMs selection under TOPSIS environment by blending the entropy technique and the distance-based approach.
Originality/value
In any multi-criteria decision-making process, ambiguity is a crucial issue. To deal with the uncertain environment of decision-making, various devices and methodologies have been explained. Pythagorean fuzzy sets (PFSs) are perhaps the most contemporary device for dealing with ambiguity. This article addresses novel tangent distance-entropy measures under PFSs. Additionally, numerical illustration is utilized to ascertain the strength and authenticity of the suggested measures.

Abstract
Evaluating the prevention, intervention, and treatment programme is critical to understanding the decision-making behaviour of substance abusers. The study interweaves behavioural health economics with the extended PRECEDE–PROCEED Model and examines the effectiveness of treatment settings for substance users in New Jersey Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment (13,775 samples). The study also identifies the factors that are associated with substance users’ recurrence to the treatment centre. The results concluded that educational attainment, counselling services from health care providers, mental agency services, and detoxification treatments have a significant impact on preventing relapse behaviour.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate effects on global supply chain reconfigured in the customs duty rate of parts and specific material types brought about by Brexit and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Design/methodology/approach
The supply chain network is modeled and formulated using mixed integer programming. Numerical experiments are conducted using bill of materials with information such as the procurement cost of each part, 3D-CAD and an industry census.
Findings
The experiments indicates that if the customs duty rate increases by Brexit, manufacturers would be necessary to restructure supply chain configuration and locate the domestic factory and market. Additionally, when the UK leaves the EU and joins the TPP, there is a case where the total cost decreases in the global supply chain network compared to the baseline without Brexit. Therefore, it is reasonable for the UK to join the TPP.
Practical implications
The study shows how new trading rules from non-partnership countries can critically disrupt existing global supply chain equilibrium. Asian manufacturers should evaluate a move to more local sourcing, opening new facilities and setting up warehouses to stock finished goods or raw materials in different trading areas to overcome any barriers to the goods movement.
Originality/value
This study enables us to quantitatively evaluate what there are opportunities or cost increasing risks by the selection of supply chain configuration for Asian manufacturers by political and economic factors of each country, such as Brexit and participation in TPP.

Abstract
The reduction in IC package lead pitches in surface mount solder assembly and the current high emphasis on quality and reliability of printed circuit assemblies have created a requirement for microanalysis of fine pitch solder joints in manufacturing situations. Of particular interest are metallographic analysis, detection of solder joint defects and mechanical strength testing of solder joints. Much has been published in the literature on the results of such evaluations in specific applications but little has been available on procedures for use in the microanalysis itself, particularly for fine pitch solder joints. Detailed procedures for fine pitch solder joint microanalysis, which the authors have verified down to 0.5 mm (0.02 in.) lead pitches, are presented. In particular, the authors present procedures for metallographic examination of tin‐lead and tin‐lead‐silver solder joints. In addition, test parameters are given for a repeatable technique of fine pitch solder joint mechanical strength testing that allows mechanical strength measurements to be obtained from almost every lead on a fine pitch surface mount IC package.

Abstract
Purpose
This study was conducted to understand students' achievements in learning and to improve the overall curriculum of the first-year experience course.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, a series of questionnaire-based surveys were conducted on students enrolled in the Introductory Seminar for Policy Science, a mandatory first-year experience course offered in the first semester (from April to July) at a university in Japan. The studies were conducted in 2015 (n = 29), 2016 (n = 29) and 2017 (n = 31).
Findings
Results revealed that, regardless of the year, students deepened their understanding of policy science and gained increased confidence to explain what group works and reports are throughout the semester. In addition, students' level of worry about life at the university decreased throughout the course in all three years. A stepwise multiple regression analysis (n = 84) revealed that those students who knew what policy science was (B = 0.271) and had the confidence to write their opinions in reports (B = 0.264) more likely answered that they knew what they wanted to study over four years at the university.
Originality/value
This study revealed that the mandatory first-year experience course taught by the same instructor generated similar educational effects for different students in different years. The results elucidated the progressive effects of different components of the course, eliminating possibilities of any bias or specific characteristics of a single group of students.
