Abstract

Purpose

Low-income consumers’ perceptions of access and inclusion in financial services, remain underresearched. To fill this gap, the purpose of this study, is to investigate elements of low-income consumers’ informal and formal financial service experiences, from their personal experience.

Design/methodology/approach

Mixed methods using data collected from low-income consumers in Latin America, reveal a spectrum of consumer perceptions making up access, inclusion and social dependence within financial service experiences. Scales, grounded in the consumer experience, are developed, validated and used to test a model of consumers’ service inclusivity perceptions.

Findings

Service costs, information and documentation difficulty, convenience and social dynamics influence low-income consumers’ perceptions of financial service inclusivity.

Research limitations/implications

Analysis reveals differentiation in the impact of aspects of low-income consumers’ experiences between formal and informal financial services. Working directly with this unique population exposes the nuance of their financial service experiences.

Practical implications

This research provides a more holistic perspective on low-income consumers’ financial service experience and provides contextually relevant scales with robust psychometric properties. Services marketers can use this research to inform design and evaluation of financial service offerings for low-income consumers.

Originality/value

This research contributes to study of the wellbeing of low-income consumers by providing understanding of their financial service experiences from their point-of-view and providing contextually-relevant, empirically validated tools for future inquiry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores a hegemonic alliance and the role of relational forms of accounting and accountablity in the making of contemporary capitalism.

Design/methodology/approach

We use the WikiLeaks “Cablegate” documents to provide an account of the detailed machinations between interest groups (corporations and the state) that are constitutive of hegemonic activity.

Findings

Our analysis of the “Cablegate” documents shows that the US and Chevron were crafting a central role for Turkmenistan and its president on the global political stage as early as 2007, despite offical reporting beginning only in 2009. The documents exemplify how “accountability gaps” occlude the understanding of interdependence between capital and the state.

Research limitations/implications

The study contributes to a growing idea that official accounts offer a fictionalized narrative of corporations as existing independently, and thus expands the boundaries associated with studying multinational corporate activities to include their interdependencies with the modern state.

Social implications

The study traces how global capitalism extends into new territories through diplomatic channels, as a strategic initiative between powerful state and capital interests, arguing that the outcome is the empowerment of authoritarian states at the cost of democracy.

Originality/value

The study argues that previous accounting and accountability research has overlooked the larger picture of how capital and the state work together to secure a mutual hegemonic interest. We advocate for a more complete account of these activities that circumvents official, often restricted, views of global capitalism.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to discuss the contribution of street art projects to the place-making of villages and the effects it generates for local stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual framework is developed based on the main characteristics of the place-making process, street art, creative place-making, as well as place identity, revitalisation and regeneration. This framework defines a set of thematic categories for the qualitative content analysis of online information, e.g. websites, media and blog posts, as well as in-depth interviews with local stakeholders.

Findings

This research presents the contribution of street art in place-making involving citizens, local businesses and international artists in a collective act to preserve local identity and revitalise and regenerate villages.

Research limitations/implications

The research is focused only on villages. Cities are not considered in the research.

Practical implications

Street art projects provide villages with several opportunities, such as stimulating place regeneration and revitalisation, giving new shape and decoration to neighbourhoods and streets and attracting visitors and business. Moreover, street art is commonly used to communicate local history, culture, traditions and social and political facts, helping places to vehiculate their identity and their messages to the next generations. Street art is also used as a part of a place branding strategy.

Social implications

The village gets the opportunity to exploit the street art value proposition to stimulate the restocking of the place, if the primary stakeholders of the place are ready to invest in the new place identity giving trust to the street art project.

Originality/value

Street art projects contribute to the place-making of villages. They are used to communicate place identity, fostering cooperation between local stakeholders and economic and social development.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes a set of recommendations based upon the limitations found with the application and assessment process to become a Special Constable (SC) with one of the 43 police forces in England and Wales.

Design/methodology/approach

Participants were recruited via online social media platforms Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as personal networks and the study was geared towards both respondents who had completed the whole of the application and assessment process, as well as those who may have withdrawn at a particular point or who failed an element of the assessment.

Findings

This study yielded several key findings. First, some respondents had limited to no knowledge of the role of the Special Constable, nor of the depth of police work that would be expected of them. Secondly, respondents indicated that they would have benefited from support during the application and assessment process, specifying the advantages that could be derived from a variety of sources such as local force input and workshop sessions. Finally, respondents stated that poor communication from recruiting teams impacted their experience of applying to the Special Constable programmes, causing them to rethink their decision to join.

Originality/value

This research proposes that a far greater input from serving Special Constables during the application and assessment process is key to improving the experiences of candidates, and to their chances of success with the programme.

Abstract

Purpose

Analyst team forecasts are the most frequent form of earnings expectations available to investors, with teams issuing more than 70% of research reports in 2016. Prior research provides differing evidence on whether analyst teams issue higher or lower quality forecasts than individual analysts.

Design/methodology/approach

I use a sample of more than 17,000 hand-collected analyst reports representing 7,586 forecasts from 89 companies in three industries from 1994–2005.

Findings

I document that analyst teams benefit from an assembly bonus, and issue more accurate forecasts than individual analysts only in time periods when teams would be expected to benefit from an assembly bonus.

Practical implications

I outline multiple factors within the control of brokerage houses that impact teams’ relative forecast quality, such as the number of members in the team, how long the team has worked as a unit and the costliness of integrating information when forming a forecast.

Originality/value

Given the preponderance of analyst teams and the strength of market reaction to their forecasts, it is valuable to document factors both in the past and present likely to affect analyst teams’ relative forecast accuracy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the underlying mechanisms through which entrepreneurial marketing (EM) promotes the development of a favorable brand image and enhances sales growth and market share in new ventures (NVs).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors tested the theoretical model using a multi-informant design in which survey data were collected from NV entrepreneurs and marketing managers. Hypotheses were tested using linear regression and PROCESS analysis.

Findings

The authors demonstrate the significance of EM as comprising two NV capabilities – first, the level of complementarity between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and market orientation (MO) as a dynamic capability, and second, brand management capabilities (BMCs) as an operational capability – in shaping a favorable NV brand image and promoting market performance.

Research limitations/implications

The authors offer a novel perspective by demonstrating that EO and MO yield complementarities in driving NVs’ BMCs, which, in turn, drive brand image development and market performance for NVs. In doing so, the authors demonstrate novel theoretical implications for the relevance of EM to NV branding, which, to date, has received scant attention in the literature.

Practical implications

The authors identify a potential avenue for entrepreneurs and NV managers to mitigate the potential failure rates by simultaneously pursuing a higher level of EO and MO and investing in brand-building activities. Such efforts can help enhance brand image, drive sales growth and foster long-term success.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to include brand capabilities as an element of EM, examine EM in NV brand image development and identify the role of EM capabilities relevant to NV brand building and market performance simultaneously.

Abstract

Purpose

In the context of open innovation, more and more enterprises are leveraging innovation networks to drive disruptive innovation performance, but there is no consensus on the relationship between network embeddedness and enterprise disruptive innovation performance. This paper aims to systematically explore the relationship between them.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper constructs a multi-level network embeddedness model and uses 58 independent studies as samples to explore the relationship between multi-level network embeddedness and enterprise disruptive innovation performance by meta-analysis.

Findings

First, network embeddedness at the enterprise and regional levels will promote the improvement of disruptive innovation performance. Although industrial relationship embeddedness will promote the improvement of disruptive innovation performance, its structural embeddedness will bring negative effects. Second, in terms of mediating effect, policy-oriented support will promote the relationship between network embeddedness and disruptive innovation performance at the enterprise and industry levels. Compared with large enterprises, small- and medium-sized enterprises will have more advantages in the performance of multi-level network embedding and disruptive innovation performance. Under the subjective performance measurement method, the promotion effect of multi-level network embedding is more prominent.

Research limitations/implications

This study enriches the theoretical research of network embeddedness and disruptive innovation and provides management enlightenment for the network embeddedness strategy of enterprise disruptive innovation. Limited by data samples and article length, future research can further expand literature samples to test the stability of variable relationships and test the moderating effects of more internal and external factors.

Originality/value

First, it constructs a theoretical analysis model of “point-line-surface” multi-level network embedding and disruptive innovation performance of enterprises and expands the theoretical analysis framework of network embedding and disruptive innovation performance. The second is to explore the influence mechanism of multi-level network embeddedness and enterprise disruptive innovation performance. Third, it deepens the theoretical understanding of the moderating variables of the impact of network embeddedness and enterprise disruptive innovation performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Although organizations are investing heavily in digital transformation (DT) of the sales function, implementation and exploitation at the sales force level are ongoing challenges. As sales managers serve as conduits of influence between top management and the sales force, the success of strategic initiatives, such as DT, hinges heavily on leveraging their influence to promote change adoption at the sales force level. Accordingly, this research is guided by the research question: how can sales organizations secure the buy-in of sales managers and induce their championing behaviors directed toward the sales force?. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how organizational and psychological resources influence sales managers' DT change champion through their change readiness.

Design/methodology/approach

Construing DT in sales as an organizational change that creates contextual job demands, the theoretical framework offers several hypotheses linking organizational and personal resources with sales managers’ change readiness and championing behaviors. The perceived impact of change is included as a moderating variable. Using data from a sample of 176 business-to-business sales managers, the hypotheses are tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The authors demonstrate that two change-related organizational resources (change communication and change mobilization) and a personal psychological resource (psychological capital) facilitate sales managers’ emotional and cognitive change readiness, which, in turn, enhances their championing behaviors toward DT initiatives. Further, the authors find that perceived change impact augments the effects of organizational and psychological resources on change readiness, thus highlighting the importance of effective positioning of the outcomes of change.

Practical implications

This study provides practitioners with actionable guidance on securing the buy-in of sales managers for change initiatives such as DT. Specifically, communication and mobilization are critical inducements. Managers who score high on psychological capital can be targeted as change agents. Further, the impact of change needs to be framed positively, as the resultant perceptions magnify the effects of organizational resources.

Originality/value

While prior research has examined salespeople’s response to change, very little is known about the antecedents of change readiness and championing behavior among sales managers. Based on the results, the authors identify theoretical and managerial implications as well as future research directions.

The objective of this review article is to meticulously examine and critically evaluate the present body of literature on sensory marketing. The study aims to explore this domain’s latest trends and prospects using diverse metrics such as annual publication trends, authorship patterns, most cited publications, sources analysis, co-citation patterns, keyword analysis and thematic analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

In the study, bibliometric analysis is used to assess the different advancements in the field. To perform performance analysis, science mapping and network analysis, VOSviewer, Bibloshiny and MS Excel are used. Additionally, the Scopus database is used to extract literature related to the subject area.

Findings

The most cited author of the domain is Biswas D, while the most prolific source of the domain is Plos One, additionally “An integrative review of sensory marketing: Engaging the senses to affect perception, judgment, and behavior” is stated as the most cited publication in the domain. Moreover, experiential marketing is reported as the most important keyword of the domain. Additionally, other findings reported are stated in the main body of the research study.

Practical implications

Practical implications of the study extended to marketing practitioners, future researchers and various stakeholders interested in the subject area.

Originality/value

What stands this research paper apart from other studies is the comprehensive approach to the evaluation of literature using VOSviewer, Bibloshiny and MS Excel and in-depth evaluation of the domain using performance analysis, science mapping, network analysis and thematic analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of the conflict in Ukraine led to a sustained downturn in tourist arrivals (TA) in Russia. This paper aims to explore the influence of geopolitical risk (GPR) and other indices on TA over 1995–2023.

Design/methodology/approach

We employ a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model to analyze the effects, capturing both the positive and negative shocks of these variables on TA.

Findings

Our research demonstrates that the NARDL model is more effective in elucidating the complex dynamics between macroeconomic factors and TA. Both an increase and a decrease in GPR lead to an increase in TA. A 1% negative shock in GPR leads to an increase in TA by 1.68%, whereas a 1% positive shock in GPR also leads to an increase in TA by 0.5%. In other words, despite the increase in GPR, the number of tourists coming to Russia increases by 0.5% for every 1% increase in that risk. Several explanations could account for this phenomenon: (1) risk-tolerant tourists: some tourists might be less sensitive to GPR or they might find the associated risks acceptable; (2) economic incentives: increased risk might lead to a depreciation in the local currency and lower costs, making travel to Russia more affordable for international tourists; (3) niche tourism: some tourists might be attracted to destinations experiencing turmoil, either for the thrill or to gain firsthand experience of the situation; (4) lagged effects: there might be a time lag between the increase in risk and the actual impact on tourist behavior, meaning the effects might be observed differently over a longer period.

Originality/value

Our study, employing the NARDL model and utilizing a dataset spanning from 1995 to 2023, investigates the impact of GPR, gross domestic product (GDP), real effective exchange rate (REER) and economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on TA in Russia. This research is unique because the dataset was compiled by the authors. The results show a complex relationship between GPR and TA, indicating that factors influencing TA can be multifaceted and not always intuitive.
