Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the types of Shariah capabilities of Islamic banks, which provide bases for the types of Shariah value propositions, offered by the relationship managers in their front-line service experiences with the customers.

Design/methodology/approach

A resource-based view of Shariah capabilities and a service-dominant logic view of value propositions are adopted. Fifteen relationship managers from multiple Islamic banks in Pakistan are interviewed to find a typology of Shariah capabilities and a resultant typology of value propositions for Islamic banks.

Findings

The findings suggest that Islamic banks claim to possess five types of Shariah capabilities, namely, Shariah governance capability (SGC), Shariah compliance capability (SCC), Shariah monitoring capability (SMC), Shariah structuring (product) capability (SSC) and Shariah learning capability (SLC). These capabilities lead to four types of values propositions, namely, Shariah identity value (SIV), Riba-free value (RFV), Shariah disclosure value (SDV) and Tangibility value (TV) of the real assets in transactions.

Research limitations/implications

The study has relied on the front-line experiences of relationship managers who are connected to the Islamic banks’ capabilities inside the banks and the value propositions that they offer to show relationships with customers in front-line service experiences. Other stakeholders may have different perspectives on both capabilities and value propositions.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to Islamic finance theory by theoretically and empirically showing two typologies for the Islamic banks' capabilities and value propositions, respectively.

Abstract

Purpose

The main issue is whether customers prefer convenience over Shariah compliance or the opposite when they decide their Islamic banking needs. The purpose of this paper is to explore why customers adopt Islamic banking products and services: Shariah compliance or convenience?

Design/methodology/approach

Using convenience sampling, 310 respondents’ data were collected through online survey. For testing the fit and hypotheses of the proposed model, AMOS 25 software and Smart-PLS 4.0 software have been used.

Findings

Attitude, Islamic value and convenience have significant determinants of Islamic banking products and services. Shariah compliance has no direct or indirect influence on neither intention nor actual behaviour to adopt Islamic banking services. Furthermore, gender has no such differential effect on the adoption.

Practical implications

Managers and marketers of Islamic banks may benefit from the findings of this study, which demonstrate fresh insights regarding the factors which help in strategy formulations to promote Islamic banking services.

Originality/value

The growth of Islamic banks, branches and windows is remarkable in both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority countries in the world. This paper postulates the behavioural finance studies in Islamic banking and finance research stream by extending the theory of planned behaviour of Ajzen (1985) as all the three new constructs (Islamic value, convenienc and Shariah compliance) are statistically fit for further studies. However, only Islamic value and convenience are the two significant factors which drive customers to take decision in the proposed model. This study gives insights to the bankers and authority about the consumer behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

Many scholars have primarily disregarded employee motivation in the context of Western and Islamic ideas. To better understand employee motivation, this paper aims to explore a novel approach of fusing McClelland’s needs theory (i.e. achievement, power and affiliation) with Maqasid Shariah.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts a theoretical research design. There will be a thorough literature study of McClelland’s theory, Maqasid Shariah, and employee motivation. Qualitative content analysis is used to examine and compile pertinent ideas. To give a thorough framework for comprehending employee motivation from both Western and Islamic ethical viewpoints, McClelland’s theory and Maqasid Shariah are integrated.

Findings

This paper has conceptualized the integration of Maqasid Shariah’s five requirements with McClelland’s need theory. It is suggested that Maqasid Shariah and McClelland’s need theory be combined to understand employee motivation. For employees, the integration of McClelland’s need theory and Maqasid Shariah entails developing a work environment that attends to their many needs, is consistent with Islamic principles, encourages justice and equity, supports both professional and personal development and promotes social responsibility. By combining McClelland’s need theory and Maqasid Shariah, 15 propositions are developed to explain employee motivation. The study offers a measurement index to explain employee motivation based on the two theories.

Research limitations/implications

The integration of McClelland’s theory of need and Maqasid Shariah offers expected positive implications. By considering the cultural and religious context in Islamic societies, researchers can adopt a more sensitive approach to studying motivation. This blend provides a holistic understanding of motivation, incorporating individual needs and broader ethical dimensions. Studies may explore the impact on prosocial behavior, organizational values, leadership practices and employee well-being. Understanding the alignment between personal motives and ethical principles can benefit organizations in diverse workplaces, emphasizing long-term sustainability and fostering employee engagement and commitment.

Practical implications

The integration of McClelland’s theory and Maqasid Shariah shows the potential implications to increase employee motivation. This study contributes significantly to Maqasid Shariah theory in business research by guiding ethical decision-making aligned with Islamic values, fostering inclusive workplaces and offering strategies for boosting employee morale. It emphasizes ethical practices, legal compliance and community engagement, while also encouraging sustainable business models that consider societal well-being and the environment.

Originality/value

This paper provides its unique value by being among the first to integrate McClelland’s theory and Maqasid Shariah and providing an innovative approach in developing a new measurement index in the context of employee motivation.

Abstract

Purpose

With the advent of technology and internet banking, the role and value of bank’s websites have increased. Additionally, the Islamic banking boom has also increased the role of Shariah-based banking in the market. But neither web-based information nor Shariah board members have been investigated for their possible effects on the branding of Islamic banks. Against this backdrop, this study aims to explore web-based information and Shariah board as a source of branding of Islamic financial institutions (IFIs).

Design/methodology/approach

An interpretivism-based thematic inquiry is carried out through semi-structured interviews of 22 customers of Islamic banks.

Findings

The findings of the study highlighted the fact that customers’ perceived web-based information is in line with the Shariah objectives but showed low level of trust on that information. They assumed that the practices are not consistent with this information. Moreover, the Shariah board members were considered as brand ambassadors, and customers valued board members more than the Shariah board and Islamic bank itself. Findings further highlight the more knowledge customers have about the Shariah board members (experience, qualification, achievements, etc.) the greater is the impact on the branding of the IFIs.

Originality/value

This study offers a novel perspective by considering the value of web-based information and Shariah board on branding of Islamic banks. As there is no such study available in literature, up to the best of researchers' knowledge, the qualitative inquiry may suffice the study objectives and research questions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to document the performance of analysts' recommendations for shariah-compliant firms and non-shariah-compliant firms in the MENA region during the period between 2005 and 2009.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses post-recommendation market-adjusted returns as a measure of performance and computes returns for different holding periods. Significant positive (negative) returns following buy (sell) recommendation will indicate value relevance of these recommendations.

Findings

The results show that analysts are not able to make any value relevant recommendations for shariah-compliant firms. The author documents insignificant returns following analysts' buy and sell recommendations for shariah-compliant firms. In contrast to their performance for shariah-compliant firms, the results show that analysts are able to produce value relevant recommendations for non-shariah-complaint firms. The author reports significant returns following analysts' buy recommendations for non-shariah-complaint firms. The author also reports significantly positive spread between returns following analysts' buy and sell recommendations for non-shariah-compliant firms. Positive spread indicates that analysts are able to differentiate between well-performing and badly-performing non-shariah-compliant firms. Interestingly, in case of sell recommendations, the results show no significant value in analysts' sell recommendations for non-shariah-complaint firms.

Practical implications

The results imply that investors should not blindly follow analyst recommendations for shariah-compliant firms while making their investment decisions in the MENA region.

Originality/value

This paper makes detailed analysis of analyst recommendations for shariah-compliant firms and non-shariah-compliant firms in previously unexplored MENA region.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to revisit the relationship between Shariah-compliant firms and earnings management. Specifically, the authors examine whether Shariah-certified firms have lower earnings management than non-Shariah-certified firms and how often a firm must hold its certification to observe considerably reduced earnings management. This study also explores how senior management ethnic dualism affects the association of Shariah certification and earnings management.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyze the hypothesized association between Shariah certification and earnings management using a panel regression model and several robustness tests, including the Heckman selection model. The sample consists of 547 nonfinancial firms listed on the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange, with 5,478 firm-year observations over the 2001–2016 sample period.

Findings

Shariah certification is found to mitigate earnings management, particularly for firms that consistently retain their Shariah status. The longer firms retain their Shariah certification continually, the lower the earnings management. Additionally, the results indicate that the negative impact of Shariah certification on earnings management is driven by ethnic duality when a specific ethnic group dominates the top management.

Research limitations/implications

Firms’ commitment to religious-based screening and continuation of certification plays a significant role in improving earnings quality. Firms are committed to abiding by the Shariah code of conduct instead of using the Shariah status for reputation purposes to attract investors.

Practical implications

For investors, the continuous compliance status is a crucial indicator of a firm’s commitment to comply with Shariah principles and to mitigate earnings management. Regarding policy implications, Shariah-compliance guidelines can constrain earnings manipulation, especially among firms lacking ethnic diversity.

Originality/value

The study shows that Shariah certification must be maintained consecutively to reduce earnings management. Shariah certification’s governance function is crucial in ethnically homogeneous firms, primarily when one ethnic group dominates the senior management.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to conduct a review and analysis of the literature on Shariah audit compliance by examining the difference between internal and external auditors, the scope of internal Shariah audits and the qualification of Shariah auditors.

Design/methodology/approach

The current study used content analysis and the descriptive approach to achieve the main objective of the study. To ensure that Islamic Financial Institutions’ (IFIs) practices preserve Shariah principles and values when providing Shariah-compliant products and services, this audit will be used to supervise and monitor the operations of IFIs. The main goal of Shariah compliance auditing is to protect the interests of IFIs stakeholders, including account holders, shareholders, creditors, management and employees, as well as the general public while ensuring that the mechanisms of checks and balances in place are appropriate and tailored to the goals and missions of its establishment following the Maqasid Al-Shariah.

Findings

The findings of this study attempt to contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding Shariah audit compliance by advising IFIs on the value of Shariah compliance auditing in addressing the needs of its stakeholders. As a result, the benefits of Shariah compliance audits will be maximized, and future legislative changes will be implemented to reduce or completely remove the risk of Shariah’s failure to comply.

Practical implications

This research advises IFIs on the usefulness of Shariah compliance auditing in addressing the demands of its stakeholders to add to the body of knowledge on Shariah audit compliance. Moreover, all parties involved to take action to reduce the gap that will significantly affect stakeholders’ confidence, particularly concerning the Shariah compliance of the IFIs’ products and services on their operations and activities.

Originality/value

The advantages of Shariah compliance audits will thus be maximized, and future regulatory improvements will be made to lessen or eliminate the danger of Shariah noncompliance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent of Maqasid Al-Shariah corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure of public listed companies of Shariah-compliant companies in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

Content analysis was used to construct the Maqasid Al-Shariah CSR disclosure index. Furthermore, the study used a checklist that covered four themes of CSR, namely environment, community involvement, human resource and product, and five elements of Maqasid Al-Shariah, namely, faith, human self, intellect, posterity and wealth.

Findings

The findings of the study show that the level of Maqasid Al-Shariah CSR disclosure index is generally low. The study found that Shariah-compliant companies revealed more community-related theme and an intellect element in their annual reports for the year of the survey.

Originality/value

This paper is one of few papers that has developed the Maqasid Al-Shariah CSR disclosure index that used the aforementioned four themes of CSR and five Maqasid Al-Shariah elements.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to document the information transmission capacity of Shariah-compliant firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The vector auto-regression (VAR) model is used to test the information transmission capacity of Shariah-compliant firms in India during the period between 2010 and 2015.

Findings

The findings show that the returns of non-Shariah-compliant firms lead the returns of Shariah-compliant firms. It is argued that non-Shariah-compliant firms possess certain financial characteristics (higher leverage, higher accounts receivable and higher cash holdings) that make their information environment better than information environment of Shariah-compliant firms. The authors argue that superior information environment leads to timely incorporation of market-wide information, thereby causing the returns of non-Shariah-compliant firms to lead the returns of Shariah-compliant firms. It is also shown that the result holds in various market conditions.

Originality/value

It is believed that prior literature does not adequately address the information transmission capacity of the stock prices of Shariah-compliant firms. The gap is filled by documenting that stock prices of Shariah-compliant firms that are more informative than stock prices of non-Shariah-compliant firms.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the dynamic portfolio optimisation performance of numerous samples of Shariah-compliant firms in the USA vis-à-vis the overall conventional sample.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper constructs efficient frontiers and subsequently the capital market line using the ovport set of commands in STATA. From the capital market line, the tangent portfolio is found, and the Sharpe ratio of the tangent portfolio is the primary measurement of the dynamic portfolio optimisation performance of the samples of Shariah-compliant samples in this study.

Findings

This paper finds that the overall conventional sample will outperform the Shariah-compliant samples in most cases. However, there exists a consistent trend whereby the performance of the overall conventional sample will converge towards the performance of the Shariah-compliant samples (and even be lower at times), as the market approaches a looming crisis suggesting that the Shariah-compliant samples do not experience significant deteriorations in their performance as compared to the conventional sample and that they provide stability during such times.

Research limitations/implications

This paper assumes no transaction costs, illiquidity, bid-ask spread and non-compliant revenue purification all of which may negatively affect portfolio performance.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper suggest that Shariah-compliant samples should be included in portfolios during times of crisis because they are less affected by market-wide volatility.

Social implications

The stability of Shariah-compliant samples reflects the conservativity of the contemporary Shariah stock screening methodologies and the Shariah itself.

Originality/value

Portfolio optimisation studies on Shariah-compliant samples are usually static in nature and are conducted in selected Muslim countries. This paper studies the dynamic portfolio optimisation in the USA where a liquid Islamic capital market is non-existent.
