Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to conduct a thorough literature review to map current studies on international marketing capabilities (IMCs) applying dynamic capabilities view (DCV). The aim of this study is to increase the chances for more conceptual and terminological rigor in future research in this particular research area.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a systematic literature review following the established review process of reviews in leading (international) marketing journals. A multilevel analytical approach was adopted, combining inductive coding with deductive coding and following the logic of antecedents-phenomena-consequences.

Findings

Synthesis of 20 rigorously selected previous empirical studies on IMCs applying DCV reveals that academic interest in these capabilities is well justified and growing and there are some well researched antecedents to focal capabilities (e.g. inter-organizational capabilities, outside-in market orientation) as well as their prevalent consequences (e.g. export and innovation performance). There is little knowledge of moderators to these links, especially with regard to consequences. This review illustrates that the current research lacks consistency in how key constructs are defined and measured, provides the guide to future conceptualization and measurement of so-called International Dynamic Marketing Capabilities (IDMCs) and proposes some concrete research directions.

Originality/value

The authors extend prior research in the investigated topic by critically evaluating prior works, providing improved conceptualization of IDMCs as well as concrete research agenda for IDMCs structured along recommendations for Theory, Context and Methods (TCM framework).

Abstract

There would appear to be a view in common currency that IT is revolutionizing marketing, offering the possibilities of enhanced operational efficiency, the facilitation of the development of innovative products and services as well as the potential for reconfiguring marketing in the organization. Addresses the manner in which IT has affected and may significantly affect marketing by references to an empirical study of the existing and projected impact of IT on marketing activities, as well as analysing the factors which are likely to facilitate or impede the process. IT can be the handmaiden to the erosion of marketing as a major organizational function, with many of the traditional customer oriented activities being more widely diffused throughout the organization. On the other hand, it may be that marketing retains its position by adopting the role of guardian of the customer orientation, taking responsibility for defining the form and content of information that is an acceptable basis for organizational discourse.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between supply chain collaboration and innovation. It particularly investigates the effect of collaboration on radical innovation and highlights the positive impact of innovation, both radical and incremental, on business performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of 230 Indonesian firms was conducted and the instrument was tested for reliability and validity to warrant its psychometric properties. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

This study reveals that collaboration with suppliers brings radical innovation, while collaboration with customers brings incremental innovation. Contrary to this study’s conjecture, albeit interesting, collaboration with customers negatively affects radical innovation. Both radical and incremental innovations further exert a positive influence over firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

This study focuses on the relationships between supply chain collaboration, innovation and firm performance. The results enhance our understanding of types of innovation that are promoted by each dimension of collaboration. Further studies could extend the research by using a more elaborate measure of innovation or perform a longitudinal examination.

Practical implications

Managers are encouraged to pursue innovation as it improves firm performance. They could exploit their current partnership with customers to generate incremental innovation or leverage their supplier network to develop radical innovation.

Originality/value

Studies that specifically investigate the impact of firms’ collaboration with their supply chain partners on radical innovation are quite scarce. This empirical study is among the very few to fill this void by providing an integrative assessment of customer, supplier and internal collaborations and their impact on both radical and incremental innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on the resource- and knowledge-based views, this paper aims to explore how coopetition affects radical innovation and the roles of knowledge structure and external knowledge integration in the relationship between coopetition and radical innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study proposes a research model to examine the mediating role of external knowledge integration on the coopetition-radical innovation link, where the mediation is moderated by the firm’s knowledge structure (including component knowledge and architectural knowledge). The authors use regression and bootstrapping to test the proposed model with survey data from 241 Chinese technology firms.

Findings

This study finds that coopetition positively affects radical innovation and the effect is fully mediated by external knowledge integration. Additionally, component knowledge negatively moderates the coopetition-external knowledge integration link and architectural knowledge positively moderates this relationship. Further, the mediating effect of external knowledge integration is also moderated by component knowledge and architectural knowledge.

Practical implications

Firms should engage in coopetition to promote radical innovation. Further, it is necessary for firms to appropriately manage coopetition according to their internal knowledge structure.

Originality/value

This study explains why scholars have different ideas about the relationship between coopetition and radical innovation by exploring the mediating role of external knowledge integration and the moderating effect of knowledge structure. Firms possess increased possibilities for knowledge leakage and partner opportunism with high levels of component knowledge, which will reduce the positive effect coopetition on external knowledge integration; thus, they are less likely to realize radical innovation. Instead, firms possess increased opportunities for resource sharing with high levels of architectural knowledge, thus improving the positive effect coopetition on external knowledge integration and they are more likely to achieve radical innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

This research is the first to examine disruptive marketing, a subset perspective of entrepreneurial marketing, and unintended consequences of marketing in the context of the nonprofit arts sector.

Design/methodology/approach

This exploratory research has two components: development of a body of knowledge and conceptual model of disruptive marketing, its predictors, and its intended/unintended consequences based on pertinent literature and input from arts organization executive directors, artistic directors, and marketing managers; and preliminary assessment, with a qualitative study, of the operationalization of disruptive marketing and related factors in arts organizations.

Findings

The study categorizes and analyzes qualitative study structured interview responses to outline commonality/lack of commonality among them and provide insight into perceptions of arts organization executive directors.

Research limitations/implications

This initial study inaugurates an academic research stream on the topic of disruptive marketing which has the potential to make a significant contribution to the body of marketing knowledge. Future opportunities include scale development and quantitative testing of the proposed theoretical model, broadening the research scope to include multiple input sources from a wide variety of arts organizations and longitudinal research to assess the model factors over time.

Practical implications

Analyses of both preliminary input from arts organization managers and qualitative study responses of arts organization executive directors indicate significant interest in application of creative and innovative approaches to arts sector marketing‐related situations.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to study perceived scope/characteristics of disruptive marketing and unintended consequences of marketing in the nonprofit arts sector, and it presents results of a qualitative assessment of those topics, including consequences.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the 2008 financial crisis, the financial industry is in need of innovation to increase stability and improve quality of services. The purpose of this paper is to explore internal barriers that influence the effectiveness of projects within large financial services firms focussing on potentially disruptive and radical innovations. While literature has generally focused on barriers within traditional technology and manufacturing firms, few researchers have identified barriers for these type of firms.

Design/methodology/approach

A framework of internal barriers was developed and validated by means of an explorative case study. Data were collected at a European bank by exploring how innovation is organized and what barriers influence effectiveness of eight innovation projects.

Findings

Six items were identified as key barrier for potentially disruptive and radical innovations (e.g. traditional risk-avoidance focus, and inertia caused by systems architecture). As such, in the sample these were more important than traditionally defined barriers such as sources of finance, and lacking exploration competences.

Research limitations/implications

Based on a small number of projects within one firm, the results highlight the need for more in-depth research on the effects of barriers and how barriers can be overcome within this industry.

Originality/value

The results show that there is a discrepancy between the societal demand for radical change within the financial industry and the ability of large financial services firms to innovate. The study identifies which unique internal barriers hamper potentially disruptive and radical innovation in large financial services firms.

Abstract

Purpose

The prevailing view in the existing literature is that open innovations (OI) increase the innovative performance of enterprises. The author examines whether the same OI practices are equally important for sole entrepreneurs, micro firms, small firms, medium-sized and large enterprises in introducing radical innovations and which set of OI practices is best for a firm, given the firm's size.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study probit models were used on a sample of 915 innovative Serbian enterprises.

Findings

OI is important for all enterprises introducing radical innovations. However, not all OI practices are equally effective in each enterprise size group. The set of OI practices leading to radical innovations depends on the firm size. Cooperation with others is not important for sole entrepreneurs and micro and large companies in introducing radical innovations. Still, cooperation's role is predominant in small and medium-sized enterprises. Also, certain OI practices are important for all enterprises, whilst others do not contribute to radical innovations, regardless of the firm size.

Practical implications

Owners/managers can save considerably by avoiding the allocation of resources to OI practices that result in little to no contribution to radical product commercialisation. At the macroeconomic level, these findings can help policymakers create adequate (tailor-made) public policies to achieve innovation in each specific group of firms.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates that not all OI practices are equally important for achieving radical production solutions in each group of enterprises.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze and clarify the influence of knowledge-oriented leadership (KOL) on radical and incremental innovation via the mediating role of knowledge sharing (KS). This study also explores the relationship between KS and two aspects of innovation capability by examining the moderating role of market turbulence.

Design/methodology/approach

The research model was tested using a structural equation modeling design based on survey data collected from 335 participants in 132 manufacturing and service firms in Vietnam.

Findings

The findings revealed that KOL serves as a key precursor to foster radical and incremental innovation directly or indirectly through KS processes. In addition, it highlights the moderating role of market turbulence in strengthening the impact of KS activities on two forms of innovation capability.

Research limitations/implications

By highlighting the important role KOL practice for stimulating KS behaviors, this paper provides a valuable understanding and novel approach for firms to improve radical and incremental. The research findings support the idea that market turbulence significantly contributes to increasing the effects of KS on innovation capability.

Originality/value

This study contributes to bridging research gaps in the the literature and advances the insights of how KOL directly and indirectly fosters innovation capability via the mediating role of KS processes under the market turbulence.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible impediments to radical innovation created by the pursuit of quality improvement in the dynamic hi‐tech sector.

Design/methodology/approach

First examines contributions and limitations of extant literature. Then analyzes three cases from the Japanese hi‐tech sector, dynamic random access memory chips , network equipment, and system integration, to understand the conditions under which the pursuit of quality creates impediments for radical innovation.

Findings

Identifies a number of mechanisms, beyond the existing literature, through which the quality culture of Japanese hi‐tech firms can inhibit innovation. Particular attention is paid to the risk averse culture that may be created, thereby damaging the potential to develop radical innovation. Some exploratory strategies are offered through which firms might minimize these problems.

Originality/value

The ways in which the quality culture of Japanese hi‐tech firms poses a challenge for innovation are explored and some exploratory views on how Japanese firms might meet this challenge are offered. Above all, the paper calls for firms to think more strategically and flexibly about the role of quality at the early stages of the product cycle for hi‐tech products.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators related to the implementation of radical innovations in secondary healthcare.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review was conducted and presented in accordance with a PRISMA flowchart. The databases PubMed and Web of Science were searched for original publications in English between the 1st of January 2010 and 6th of November 2020. The level of radicalness was determined based on five characteristics of radical innovations. The level of evidence was classified according to the level of evidence scale of the University of Oxford. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research was used as a framework to classify the barriers and facilitators.

Findings

Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, nine publications were included, concerning six technological, two organizational and one treatment innovation. The main barriers for radical innovation implementation in secondary healthcare were lack of human, material and financial resources, and lack of integration and organizational readiness. The main facilitators included a supportive culture, sufficient training, education and knowledge, and recognition of the expected added value.

Originality/value

To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review examining the barriers and facilitators of radical innovation implementation in secondary healthcare. To ease radical innovation implementation, alternative performance systems may be helpful, including the following prerequisites: (1) Money, (2) Added value, (3) Timely knowledge and integration, (4) Culture, and (5) Human resources (MATCH). This study highlights the need for more high-level evidence studies in this area.
