Papers cover a wide range of scientific and technical developments and latest advances in production techniques, particularly those which may involve environmental considerations, and highlight the technological advances being made in the move towards the 21st century.

The programme will cover various aspects of high technology joining processes ranging from soldering and brazing to diffusion and adhesive bonding. The papers presented will cover the latest developments in production techniques, methods of enhancing quality, joint inspection, new or improved materials, design/properties of joints and long‐term reliability.

The Surface Mount Equipment Manufacturers Association (SMEMA) has announced that its new document is ready for release. ‘Reflow Soldering Terms and Definitions Glossary’ was compiled under the chairmanship of Mr Phil Zarrow of Vitronics. This SMEMA publication will be updated regularly under the ongoing supervision of this committee.

This, the first BABS meeting to be held at the Institute of Metals was well supported with over 60 delegates in attendance. The seminar Chairman, Dr Hector Steen of Multicore Solders Ltd, is to be congratulated on putting together such an excellent programme which I am certain helped ensure the success of the event. I hope that all future BABS seminars will be as well supported.

BABS AUTUMN CONFERENCE 1992 — The Joining Environment. Date: 14–15 October 1992 Venue: Post House, Coventry The BABS 1992 Autumn Conference The Joining Environment, to be held at the Forte Posthouse Coventry on 14–15 October 1992, will provide a venue for discussion of advances in joining technology, focusing in particular on soldering, brazing and diffusion bonding practices which may also involve environmental considerations.

There can have been few periods in the history of the electronics soldering industry when the introduction of new technologies was so widespread and prevalent. Many of these changes have the objective of improving the efficiency of the process, and examples of this might be nitrogen soldering and the new developments in reflow soldering. Other changes, however, are being forced upon the industry by the impact of environmental legislation, and examples in this case include the ban on the use of CFCs and the growing pressure to replace lead‐containing solders with non‐toxic alternatives. The content of the soldering session reflected these concerns, with papers on nitrogen soldering, developments in reflow soldering and environmental issues.
