Abstract

Purpose

To address the issues of the insufficient output torque associated with the application of intensifying-flux permanent magnet (PM) machines in electric vehicles, this paper aims to propose an intensifying-flux hybrid excitation PM machine. It is possible to adjust the air gap magnetic field by adjusting the field current in the excitation winding, thereby increasing the torque output capability and speed range of the machine.

Design/methodology/approach

First, a novel intensifying-flux hybrid excited permanent magnet synchronous machine (IF-HEPMSM) is proposed on the basis of intensifying-flux permanent magnet synchronous machine (IF-PMSM) and an equivalent magnetic circuit model is established. Second, the tooth width and yoke thickness of the machine stator are optimized to ensure the overload capacity of the machine while effectively improving the wide flux regulation range. Furthermore, the electromagnetic characteristics of the IF-HEPMSM are investigated and compared with the IF-PMSM and conventional permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) by using finite element simulations.

Findings

The id of IF-HEPMSM and IF-PMSM is greater than zero low-speed magnetizing current. And the flux-weakening current of the IF-HEPMSM is 18% and 3% smaller than of the conventional PMSM and IF-PMSM.

Practical implications

Aiming at the problems of IF-PMSM applied to electric vehicles, this paper proposes an IF-HEPMSM. The air gap magnetic field is adjusted by controlling the current of the excitation winding to improve the reliability of the machine. Therefore, the IF-HEPMSM combines the advantages of high-power density and high efficiency of the PMSM and the controllable magnetic field of the electro-excitation machine, which is of great engineering value when applied in the field of electric vehicles.

Originality/value

The proposed IF-HEPMSM offers better flux regulation capability with electromagnetic characteristics analysis and maps of dq-axis current as compared to IF-PMSM and conventional PMSM. Moreover, the improvement of the torque can make up for the shortcomings of the insufficient torque output capability of the IF-PMSM.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce and analyze a dual-side-permanent-magnet Halbach array vernier (DSPMHV) machine and to propose methods for achieving high torque density.

Design/methodology/approach

Flux harmonics and torque characteristics are analyzed by using finite element analysis. First, a suitable pole-slot combination is selected by comparison. Second, field modulation processes of DSPMHV machine are analyzed to identify the reason for high torque density. And it is compared with dual-side-PM (DSPM) machine to analyze flux harmonic and verify the flux concentrating effect of the Halbach array.

Findings

The permanent magnet (PM) field of the DSPM machine is approximately equal to the superposition of stator-PM field and rotor-PM field, which is the reason for high torque density. And the Halbach array can reduce flux leakage and increase the amplitude of main flux harmonics, then further improves torque. Improvement of torque can be achieved by choosing right pole-slot combination, adopting DSPM machine structure, reducing flux leakage and adopting field modulation principle.

Originality/value

The DSPMHV machine with split-tooth is proposed in this paper by combining the Halbach array with DSPM structure. This paper analyzes the bidirectional field modulation process, the reason for high torque density of the DSPM machine is obtained. Comparison with the DSPM machine verifies the flux concentrating effect of Halbach array. To alleviate the magnetic saturation in part of stator teeth, this paper proposes an improved DSPMHV machine with shaped auxiliary magnet.

Abstract

Purpose

When solving the cogging torque of complex electromagnetic structures, such as consequent pole hybrid excitation synchronous (CPHES) machine, traditional methods have a huge computational complexity. The notable feature of CPHES machine is the symmetric range of field-strengthening and field-weakening, but this type of machine is destined to be equipped with a complex electromagnetic structure. The purpose of this paper is to propose a hybrid analysis method to quickly and accurately solve the cogging torque of complex 3D electromagnetic structure, which is applicable to CPHES machine with different magnetic pole shapings.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a hybrid method for calculating the cogging torque of CPHES machine is proposed, which considers three commonly used pole shapings. Firstly, through magnetic field analysis, the complex 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is simplified to 2D field computing. Secondly, the discretization method is used to obtain the distribution of permeance and permeance differential along the circumference of the air-gap, taking into account the effect of slots. Finally, the cogging torque of the whole motor is obtained by using the idea of modular calculation and the symmetry of the rotor structure.

Findings

This method is applicable to different pole shapings. The experimental results show that the proposed method is consistent with 3D FEA and experimental measured results, and the average calculation time is reduced from 8 h to 4 min.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a new concept for calculating cogging torque, which is a hybrid calculation of dimension reduction and discretization modules. Based on magnetic field analysis, the 3D problem is simplified into a 2D issue, reducing computational complexity. Based on the symmetry of the machine structure, a modeling method for discretized analytical models is proposed to calculate the cogging torque of the machine.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present a novel extended hybrid analytical method (HAM) that leverages a two-dimensional (2-D) coupling between the semi-analytical Maxwell–Fourier analysis and the finite element method (FEM) in Cartesian coordinates.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model is applied to flat permanent-magnet linear electrical machines with rotor-dual. The magnetic field solution across the entire machine is established by coupling an exact analytical model (AM), designed for regions with relative magnetic permeability equal to unity, with a FEM in ferromagnetic regions. The coupling between AM and FEM occurs bidirectionally (x, y) along the edges separating teeth regions and their adjacent regions through applied boundary conditions.

Findings

The developed HAM yields accurate results concerning the magnetic flux density distribution, cogging force and induced voltage under various operating conditions, including magnetic or geometric parameters. A comparison with hybrid finite-difference and hybrid reluctance network methods demonstrates very satisfactory agreement with 2-D FEM.

Originality/value

The original contribution of this paper lies in establishing a direct coupling between the semi-analytical Maxwell–Fourier analysis and the FEM, particularly at the interface between adjacent regions with differing magnetic parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to promote the anti-disturbance and tracking accuracy performance of the servo systems, in which a modified active disturbance rejection control (MADRC) scheme is proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

An adaptive radial basis function (ARBF) neural network is utilized to estimate and compensate dominant friction torque disturbance, and a parallel high-gain extended state observer (PHESO) is employed to further compensate residual and other uncertain disturbances. This parallel compensation structure reduces the burden of single ESO and improves the response speed of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) to hybrid disturbances. Moreover, the sliding mode control (SMC) rate is introduced to design an adaptive update law of ARBF.

Findings

Simulation and experimental results show that as compared to conventional ADRC and SMC algorithms, the position tracking error is only 2.3% and the average estimation error of the total disturbances is only 1.4% in the proposed MADRC algorithm.

Originality/value

The disturbance parallel estimation structure proposed in MADRC algorithm is proved to significantly improve the performance of anti-disturbance and tracking accuracy.

Abstract

Purpose

The implementation of the digital economy has had a considerable influence on the manufacturing industry, and this paper aims to address the important issues of how to capture the opportunities presented by digital innovation and promote the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, as well as the improvement of quality and efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

Using panel data from 30 Chinese provinces and cities between 2010 and 2021, this study establishes the panel vector autoregression (PVAR) model and uses impulse response function analysis to evaluate the influence of the digital economy on the high-quality transformation and upgrading of China's small home appliance industry across five dimensions under the digital economy.

Findings

The development of digital infrastructure has not demonstrated a noteworthy capacity for advancing the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry. Furthermore, digital industrialization has exerted a minimal restraining influence on this process. Nevertheless, digital governance has consistently exhibited a substantial impact on facilitating the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry. While both industrial digitization and digital innovation hold significant potential for promoting the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry, their sustainability remains limited.

Practical implications

The organization should logically join independent innovation and open innovation, construct an industrial ecosystem for the profound convergence of the digital economy and compact household appliances, use digital-wise science and technology to empower the establishment of brand effects, strengthen the portrayal of the digital standard framework for the intelligent compact household appliance industry, advance the development of a public stage for computerized administrations in the compact household appliance industry and develop a strategy ecosystem for computerized assets in the compact household appliance industry.

Originality/value

This study offers systematic evidence of the relationship between the digital economy and the development of the small home appliance industry. The results of this research contribute to the literature on the impact of the digital economy on the manufacturing sector and provide a logical explanation for the transformation and upgrading of the small home appliance industry within the context of the digital economy.

Abstract

Purpose

Harmonic drives are used widely in aviation, robotics and instrumentation due to their benefits including high transmission ratio, compact structure and zero backlash. One of the common faults of a harmonic drive is the axial movement of the input shaft. In such a case, its input shaft moves in the axial direction relative to the body of the harmonic drive. The purpose of this study is to propose two fault diagnosis methods based on the current signal of the driving servomotor for the axial movement failure in terms of input shafts of harmonic drives.

Design/methodology/approach

In the two proposed fault diagnosis methods, the wavelet threshold algorithm is firstly used for filtering noises of the motor current signal. Then, the feature of the denoised current signal is extracted by the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method and the wavelet packet energy-entropy (WPEE) theory, respectively, obtaining two kinds of feature sets. After a deep learning model based on the deep belief network (DBN) is constructed and trained by using these feature sets, we finally identify the normal harmonic drives and the ones with the axial movement fault.

Findings

In contrast to the traditional back propagation (BP) neural network model and support vector machine (SVM) model, the fault diagnosis methods based on the combination of the EMD (as well as the WPEE) and the DBN model can obtain higher accuracy rates of fault diagnosis for axial movement of harmonic drives, which can be greater than or equal to 97% based on the data of the performed experiment.

Originality/value

The authors propose two fault diagnosis methods based on the current signal of the driving servomotor for the axial movement failure in terms of input shafts of harmonic drives, which are verified by the experiment. The presented study may be beneficial for the development of self-diagnosis and self-repair systems of different robots and precision machines using harmonic drives.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, it is aimed to develop cooling models for the efficient use of batteries and to show how important the busbar material is. Batteries, which are indispensable energy sources of electric aircraft, automobiles and portable devices, may eventually run out. Battery life decreases over time; the most critical factor is temperature. The temperature of batteries should not exceed the safe operating temperature of 313 K and it is recommended to have a balanced temperature distribution through the battery.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the effect on the battery temperature caused by using different busbar materials to connect batteries together was investigated. Gold, copper and titanium were chosen as the different busbar material. The Air velocities used were 1 m/s and 2 m/s, the air inlet temperatures were 295 and 300 K and the discharge rates 1.0–1.5–2.0–2.5C were chosen for cooling the batteries.

Findings

The best busbar material was identified as copper. Because these studies are long-term studies, it is also suggested to estimate the data obtained with ANN (Artificial Neural Networks). The purpose of ANN is to enable the solution of many different complex problems by creating systems that do not require human intelligence. Four different program (BR-LM-CGP-SCG) were used to estimate the data obtained with ANN. It was found that the most reliable algorithm was BR18. The R2 size of the BR18 algorithm in the test phase was 0.999552, the CoV size was 0.007697 and the RMSE size was 0.005076.

Originality/value

When the literature is considered, the cooling part of the battery modules has been taken into consideration during the temperature observation of the battery modules, but busbar materials connecting the batteries have always been ignored. In this study, various busbar materials were used and it was noticed how the temperature of the battery model changed under the same working conditions. These studies are very time-consuming and costly studies. Therefore, an estimation of the data obtained with artificial neural networks (ANN) was also evaluated.

Abstract

Purpose

In the dynamic realm of energy storage, lithium-ion batteries stand out as a frontrunner, powering a myriad of devices from smartphones to electric vehicles. However, efficient heat management is crucial for ensuring the longevity and safety of these batteries. This paper aims to delve into the process of lithium-ion battery heat management systems, exploring how cutting-edge technologies are used to regulate temperature and optimize performance. In addition, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies take center stage, offering insights into the intricate thermal dynamics within these powerhouses.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, thermal behavior of pouch type lithium-ion battery cell has been investigated by using CFD method. Result of different discharge rates have been evaluated by using multi-scale multi-dimensional (MSMD) battery model. By using MSMD Model 0.5C, 1C, 2C, 3C and 5C discharge rates are compared in equivalent circuit model (ECM) and NTGK empirical models by monitoring averaged surface temperature on battery body wall. In addition, on NTGK model, air cooling effect has been studied with the 0.1 m/s, 0.2 m/s and 0.5 m/s air, velocities.

Findings

Results shows that higher discharge rate causes higher temperature on battery zones and air cooling is effective to obtain the lower zone temperatures. Also, ECM model gives higher temperature than NTGK model on battery zone.

Originality/value

When the literature is evaluated, comparison of the models used in battery cooling (ECM and NTGK) has never been done before. Within the scope of this study, model comparison was made. At the same time, the time step has always been ignored in the literature. In this study, both time step and forced convection conditions were considered when comparing the models.
