Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to discuss how different techniques in Regional Science and Peace Science and the emerging techniques in Management Science can be used in analysing Disaster Management and Global pandemic with special reference to developing countries. It is necessary for me to first discuss the subjects of Disaster Management, Regional Science, Peace Science and Management Science. The objective of this chapter is to emphasise that the studies of Disaster Management should be more integrated with socioeconomic and geographical factors. The greatest disaster facing the world is the possibility of war, particularly nuclear war, and the preparation of the means of destruction through military spending.

Abstract

In the past three decades there has been spectacular development in the area of Peace Studies and Peace Science. Peace Studies that takes a more descriptive and case-oriented approach is becoming more quantitative. Peace Science has a theoretical and mathematical orientation. However, in those fields, governance of the political, social, and economic organizations has not been given adequate emphasis. Peace depends on the nature of political and administrative structure of a country. It is often said that democratic countries do not fight. Ethnic crisis and civil war in Africa and elsewhere are very much related to lack of institutions, leadership, decentralization of decision making, gender discrimination, abuse of human justice, and so on.

Abstract

To many scholars, this preface may seem to be highly critical of their work in this and other volumes. It is also critical my own books and the many articles I have written in the past on peace economics and peace science. For the moment, I refrain from being critical of the work of peace science scholars since peace science is a new science, less than half a century old.

Abstract

Peace is as old as mankind. The gospel of peace and harmony is inherent in all religions and expressed through philosophy, literature, art, and music. However, in contemporary academic disciplines, peace has been addressed differently. In sociology, individual and group conflicts that also involve psychological conflicts have been a matter of discussion for years. For the last two or three decades, international, interregional, and intraregional conflicts have received a prominent place. The study of conflict in economics is a recent phenomenon. In management, industrial relations and labor relations cover this topic through contract negotiations, mediation, and arbitration. Extensive studies are now available in many applied areas such as energy, water resources, and the environment.

Abstract

The study of war and peace is nowadays becoming a complex topic drawing from different disciplines and applying different methodologies. This book collects 10 studies on conflict and its pernicious consequences. The appropriate scientific field for this set of studies is the peace economics as defined in Isard (1994), Arrow (1995) and Caruso (2010). In particular, Peace Economics is a sub-field of Peace Science and it is generally concerned with (1) the economic determinants of actual and potential conflicts; (2) the impact of conflict on welfare and on the economic behaviour of societies; (3) the use of economic measures to cope with and control conflicts whether economic or not. Central to this field are analyses of conflicts amongst nations, regions and other communities of the world; measures to control (deescalate) arms races and achieve reduction in military expenditures; programmes and policies to utilize resources thus released for more constructive purposes. Put briefly, the main object of peace economics is the study of conflict and conflict resolution in different forms. In particular, the contents of this book are mainly on the positive ‘side’ of Peace Economics, which emphasizes the study of conflict and its consequences. In particular, in the recent years, a growing economic literature has uncovered both the economic determinants and consequences of actual intra-state conflicts. This book is intended to be a contribution to this literature. It gathers both theoretical and empirical contributions.

Abstract

This chapter aims to describe the case of Buurtzorg Nederland as a good practice of Being-Centered organizational innovation. We use the concept of corporate peace as an expression of a workplace that induces both employee and client satisfaction. This in turn strengthens several organizational outcomes such as productivity and creativeness. The innovation has been framed as Being-Centered, providing capacity for a holistic view while introducing a multi-level process structure: physical, vital, mental, psychic, and non-dual. Such a holistic view fits the organic worldview framework. This framework is being developed as an alternative to the mainstream competitive economic view. A competitive view of the world has a set of assumptions that describe how we organize a workplace. In practice it has the belief of the organization as a zero-sum game containing players who are motivated by their self-interests. These organizational assumptions often encourage hostile competitive behaviors resulting in undermining corporate peace. Management scholars urge for developing alternative principles. The principles are often labeled as sustainable, spiritual, or organic. Good practices where alternative principles of organizing are implemented assist the scholarly field to further develop alternative frameworks as opposed to the competitive economic worldview. This chapter contributes by examining a good practice. A Case Study Approach has been followed using the single case perspective with face-to-face interviews for the data collection by purposive sampling and internal company reports. In total, 38 respondents were interviewed and five interviews with the founder of Buurtzorg were conducted. Based on the case study, we suggest a Being-Centered Approach as the main explanation of the good practice at Buurtzorg rather than a focus on one single concept such as: management structure, ICT, community-based care, or a patient focus.
