Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to make news as a platform for the libraries to transmit information from the library resources and events to the huge mass of the society. The focus of the study is to design a flowchart of digesting the daily news and interlink them regularly to the library resources and events to build up a chain of development on a topic, enhance the easy promotion of the library resources to the public and offer them easy access to information.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is a theoretical explanation from the point of view of increasing the use of news acquired by a library and its resources. Literature on news-clipping service of the libraries, various news-clipping software and the trending online news applications have been studied extensively to ensure a harmonic design of the proposed flowchart.

Findings

The findings of the study describe the news digests that are expected as the outcome of the flowchart. The significant features and advantages of the news digests have also been discussed in the study.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of the study is that the flowchart which has been designed and described in this study is a blueprint. It has not been developed in real and has not been tested. But from the library’s perspective, if the flowchart is developed and implemented in each library, it will maximize the utilization and consumption of information from the news and library resources.

Originality/value

News applications are dynamic and often publish similar or ambiguous news which is difficult for an individual to identify. Moreover, the libraries mostly provide news-clipping service. If the libraries can collect the news and process them in their own way, it can extract the complete and actual information. The libraries can also tag their possessions for complementing each news digest and thus providing the users for accessing an authentic content of information.

Abstract

This is the second article on Social Science, Humanities, News and General Databases in a continuing series of articles summarizing and commenting on new database products. Two companion articles, one covering science, technology and medicine (Online & CDROM Review vol. 17 issue 4) and the other covering business and law (Online & CDROM Review vol. 17 issue 6), complement this article. The articles are based on the newly appearing database products in the Gale Directory of Databases. The Gale Directory of Databases (GDD) was created in January 1993 by merging Computer‐Readable Databases: A Directory and Data Sourcebook (CRD) together with the Directory of Online Databases (DOD) and the Directory of Portable Databases (DPD).

Abstract

Elsevier and OCLC have agreed to make all 1100‐plus Elsevier Science journals available electronically. A planned service called Elsevier Electronic Subscriptions will offer libraries complete electronic editions either in addition to or instead of paper ones. There will also be the option to use OCLC's SiteSearch system, which allows building, maintaining and searching databases locally, and OCLC's Guidon graphical user interface. This year will comprise a pilot scheme at five sites in North America, and the service should then launch commercially if the trials go well. On offer will be Group 4 facsimile images of pages plus searchable text and tables of contents. The scheme builds on Elsevier's TULIP project, extending the scope to cover all journals.

Abstract

Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) possess an advantage in preparing students of color for the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce (Gasman & Nguyen, 2014; Upton & Tannenbaum, 2014). It has been suggested that implementing additional strategies to increase the availability, dissemination, and quality of information related to successful HBCU outcomes will allow HBCUs to sustain themselves into the future (Gasman & Nguyen, 2016). We discuss the use and benefits of a novel framework THRIVE Index tool (Byrd & Mason, 2020). THRIVE uses seven dimensions (e.g., Type, History, Research, Inclusion, Identity, Voice, and Expectation) to illustrate best practices of academic pipeline programs and increase the availability of HBCU success outcomes in a comparable format. Academic pipeline programs come in several varieties, but their goal is to propel individuals from one level of the academy to another and into the workforce. Using a common framework like THRIVE also allows for the creation of a clearinghouse of what successfully works for us at HBCUs from the perspective of HBCU pipeline program directors. We describe strategies for how this option for knowledge transfer to stakeholders (e.g. parents, corporations, educational institutions, etc.) can aid in long-term sustainability efforts like recruitment strategies and partnership efforts.

Abstract

Since China began its market-oriented economic reform in 1979, government budget deficits have been a fact of life. On one hand, the share of resources owned or controlled by the government must be shrunk in order to create a favorable environment for the development of the market economy. On the other hand, the government still performs many responsibilities required by the traditional planed economy. After calculating government budget deficits and analyzing their causes, the article assesses the impacts of government budget deficits and predicts the future of deficits in China.

Abstract

When Dr Constance Scharff met Wes Geer, founding member of the band Hed PE and former touring guitarist for Korn, she was already a recognized figure in the addiction and mental health treatment field. In particular, she is known for her insight and leadership assisting healthcare professionals working at the nexus of addiction and trauma. It was not a surprise to her when Geer asked her to join Rock to Recovery, to help expand its business.

As she stepped into her leadership role with the charity, she faced a unique set of challenges. One of the musicians she worked with overdosed and died, and changes in regulations hurt accessibility to addiction treatment. Almost overnight, the company lost a significant amount of business, but more damaging was the potential for the groups’ mental health to be undermined. This chapter describes Dr Scharff’s evolving leadership during those losses and how she helped the group develop and ultimately thrive.

Dr Caroline Heldman, Chair of the Critical Theory and Social Justice Department at Occidental College, analyzes Dr Scharff’s experiences. She reveals how it is crucial in organizations like Rock to Recovery for leaders to embrace a compassionate leadership model. She also details the ways inwhich Dr Scharff had to overcome gendered leadership stereotypes to be an effective member of the Rock to Recovery team. Dr Heldman holds special insight into Rock to Recovery, as it was her brother, Christian, who died in 2018.
