Abstract

Reviews the wider applications of bridging. Considers the various types of bridging finance available. Discusses their costs and limitations. Concludes that although bridging is more costly, its flexibility and speed of access make it indispensable.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deconstruct the backpacker label by reconstructing it using the historical antecedent of drifting. Following the deconstruction of backpacking’s near past, the author build a clearer conceptual foundation for backpacking’s future.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is framed by scenario planning, which demands a critical review of the backpacking and an appreciation of its history in order to understand its future.

Findings

Backpacking, ever evolving, remains difficult to articulate and challenges researchers to “keep up” with its complexity and heterogeneity. This paper argues that researchers must learn more about how backpacking “works” by opening a dialogue with its past, before engaging in further research. The paper finds that a poor conceptualisation of backpacking has led to a codification of backpacker criteria.

Practical implications

Backpacking remains a research topic which draws disparate researchers using criteria that produces disparate results and deviations. By understanding its past, researchers will be better placed to explore the emancipatory impulses that drive backpackers today and in the future.

Originality/value

This papers’ value lies in the retrospection process which explores backpacking’s near past so as to “make sense” of present research and present scenarios for it is the immediate future. The paper re-anchors backpacking by investigating the major historical, social and cultural events leading up to its emergence.

Abstract

The law-oriented short stories and novels of lawyer/English professor John William Corrington are receiving increasing attention from legal scholars. However, no one has analyzed the science fiction screenplays he co-wrote with his wife, Joyce, from a legal perspective. This article analyzes two such screenplays and concludes that they are “Socratic” texts whose narrative structures and epistemological processes work in much the same way that the traditional participatory exchange works in law school. My analysis explores the links between law, allegory and science fiction as intersecting methods to imagine the possibilities for the future.

Abstract

This essay emerges from the author’s ongoing attempts to explore the implications of the postmodern condition on the activity called public administration. The approach is unorthodox; mixing current international events with history of science, administrative theory, and ending with an intriguing science fiction novel. The central theme of the essay is the myth of progress connected with Michael Spicer’s excellent analysis of competing theories of state. Whatever else might be said of the essay, the argument comes full circle. It begins with the idea that governing is hard work and ends on the same note.

Abstract

Purpose

To study the effects of the sodium salts of molybdate, tungstate and monovanadate as well as some derivatives of Neville‐Winter acid azo dyes on the corrosion of carbon steel in 3.5 percent NaCl solution.

Design/methodology/approach

Open circuit potential measurement and potentiostatic polarization techniques have been used.

Findings

It was found that all the compounds had inhibition effects on carbon steel dissolution. Inhibition efficiency (IE) increased with increase in inhibitor concentration. The process of inhibition was attributed to the formation of an adsorbed film on the metal surface, which protects the metal against the corrosive medium. The adsorption of these compounds on the steel/chloride interface was found to follow Freundlich adsorption isotherm behaviour.

Originality/value

Proves the effectiveness of the sodium salts of molybdate, tungstate and monovanadate as well as some derivatives of Neville‐Winter acid azo dyes on the corrosion of carbon steel in 3.5 percent NaCl solution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the article is to construct a new class of higher-order iterative techniques for solving scalar nonlinear problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The scheme is generalized by using the power-mean notion. By applying Neville's interpolating technique, the methods are formulated into the derivative-free approaches. Further, to enhance the computational efficiency, the developed iterative methods have been extended to the methods with memory, with the aid of the self-accelerating parameter.

Findings

It is found that the presented family is optimal in terms of Kung and Traub conjecture as it evaluates only five functions in each iteration and attains convergence order sixteen. The proposed family is examined on some practical problems by modeling into nonlinear equations, such as chemical equilibrium problems, beam positioning problems, eigenvalue problems and fractional conversion in a chemical reactor. The obtained results confirm that the developed scheme works more adequately as compared to the existing methods from the literature. Furthermore, the basins of attraction of the different methods have been included to check the convergence in the complex plane.

Originality/value

The presented experiments show that the developed schemes are of great benefit to implement on real-life problems.

Abstract

The Milk and Dairies Bill introduced by Mr. SAMUEL aims at securing better inspection of dairies, including all premises in which milk is obtained, stored, or sold, such as cowsheds, milk depots, and milk shops. It also aims at the tracing of impure milk and the prevention of its infection, as well as the elimination of cows yielding tuberculous milk.

Abstract

Proposals are presented for specifying a computer system for storing and searching library records in a single library or a group of associated libraries. The system provides for on‐line searching at each library and off‐line production of accessions lists, abstracts bulletins and bibliographies, as well as SDI service. The use of skilled effort is shifted from the in‐put operation to the searching stage by the use of selected natural language keys, but searching for known items is made easier than in more traditional methods by extending the use of post‐coordination to catalogue data.

Abstract

This article describes one academic’s approach to creating a research community among a diverse group of higher degree students within an individualistic research culture. The approach is characterised by acceptance of a wide range of interests and methodologies, attention to the relational and emotional needs of students, the collaborative sharing of information, ideas and problems, and a recognition that imagination and intuition are essential elements of a meaningful scientific investigation. Particular techniques for facilitating this process are described.
