Abstract
This article deals with the contribution of visual presentation to education for national identity, an issue not examined sufficiently by recent theories of nationalism. Studies of nationalism mention education only in general terms, as an instrument of socialisation on the macro level of the national system, and do not consider specific ‘micro’ educational tools. One such tool is the use of visual presentation, notably in textbooks. To demonstrate the use of visual images in promoting nationalism, this study focuses on Zionist geography textbooks at the time of the British Mandate (1918‐1948) in what Israelis refer to as Eretz Israel (pre‐state Israel), exploited by the Jewish Yishuv (Jewish community) to rally pupils to contribute to ‘the state in the making’.

Abstract
Purpose
The objective is to describe and evaluate the development of a novel planning tool for end‐use efficiency in the built environment and for infrastructural changes in the energy system.
Design/methodology/approach
After describing problems related to further reduce heat demand in the Danish built environment, the geographical nature of the planning task is discussed. The requirements are then translated into concepts for the development of a general method, which is implemented in a practical design of a heat atlas. Typical applications are described and discussed.
Findings
It was found that the availability of the extensive public databases in Denmark make feasible the development and application of a highly detailed geographical information base for end use and infrastructure planning and analysis. It was also realised that the development has much higher potentials than explored in this paper. On the other hand, the complex geography of the urban/rural boundaries of cities requires extra care when using this approach.
Research limitations/implications
Unfortunately, the results of this report are only directly applicable for Denmark, which maintains public databases on the built environment and socio‐demography with a very high standard of detail and coverage. The research presented here may require further development of empirical methods of the relation between energy demand and physically and socially mapped data. On the other hand, the research may contribute to better data for analyses in the techno‐economic analyses of future energy systems, which now can be carried out for arbitrary geographical units, independent of administrative boundaries.
Practical implications
The method presented here may be further developed as a practical tool to be used to revive the municipal and regional energy planning, either by technical consultants or by local governments. Even a publicly accessible, web‐based tool is feasible.
Originality/value
The paper describes how existing data in society can be assembled to a novel method to be used within energy planning, and environmental management as a whole. A system of the one developed does not exist as yet. On the other hand it builds upon existing traditions in energy planning and local governance.

Purpose
Aims to provide the reasons why cartographic and spatial information have become increasingly important in different library settings.
Design/methodology/approach
Presents very clear insights about the reasons cartographic and spatial information have become increasingly important and valuable in many different library settings.
Findings
Less intimidating than in the past, with better tools available to help libraries serve users with online maps, data, and cartographic information this article focuses on how the Public Library Geographic Database can provide a range of utility. Not often is the public library included as a source of GIS, but the ease of use supports this direction well and offers a new service point with www.GeoLib.org Originality/value – This paper is useful for information management professionals who seek greater understanding of geographic information systems in information management work.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study the future of the Singapore association of social workers using causal layered analysis (CLA) and the Futures Triangle. In today’s rapidly changing world, professional associations have to re-evaluate their roles to remain relevant. This paper presents an analysis of findings from a study on the level of alliance of social workers with their professional association. By critically examining underlying issues beneath common beliefs held by social workers that impede, promote or sustain change with their professional association, we can gain a deeper understanding into their level of alliance with their association. Insights toward current issues faced by the association as well as its alternative and preferred futures could be illuminated.
Design/methodology/approach
Inayatullah’s “Futures Triangle” was used to deepen the findings of the study on the level of alliance of social workers with their professional association from the lens of CLA (Inayatullah, 2004). The study employed interviews with 27 social workers in Singapore, selected through purposive sampling.
Findings
Alternative scenarios and preferred futures of the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) that were postulated from the interviews reinforce a need for more targeted recruitment campaigns. It also calls for regionalization and globalization of SASW to maximize its potentials.
Originality/value
The paper suggests how a social work association might be able to reposition its role in relation to its stakeholders to promote and sustain itself. SASW could do so through positioning itself as the “National Geographic” beacon for social workers in Singapore to reach out to the world.

Abstract
This chapter highlights the characteristics of Asia through the analysis of policy-related documents by five donor countries, namely Japan, South Korea, China, India and Thailand. It will also examine the roles played by regional bodies such as the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) and ASPBAE (the Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education) as the horizontal channels influencing aid policies in respective countries. Together with the analysis of the national and organizational policies, the regional process of building consensus on the post-2015 agenda is examined, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific Regional Education Conference (APREC) held in August 2014.
The analysis reveals that the region has two faces: one is imaginary and the other is functional. There is a common trend across Asian donors to refer to their historical ties with regions and countries to which they provide assistance and their traditional notions of education and development. They highlight Asian features in contrast to conventional aid principles and approaches based on the Western value system, either apparently or in a muted manner. In this sense, the imagined community of Asia with common cultural roots is perceived by the policymakers across the board.
At the same time, administratively, the importance of the region as a stage between the national and global levels is recognized increasingly in the multilateral global governance structure. With this broadened participatory structure, as discussed in the chapter ‘Post-EFA Global Discourse: The Process of Shaping the Shared View of the ‘Education Community’’, the expected function of the region to transmit the norms and requests from the global level and to collect and summarize national voices has increased.

Abstract
Introduction The development of the multi‐national company has generated an increasing management awareness of the opportunities to be gained by establishing marketing and production facilities on a global basis. The process of creating and developing an optimal multi‐national business strategy is extremely complex, due to the vast amount of information required to form the data base upon which decisions could be made successfully.

Abstract
Purpose
Although the role of enterprise in R&D is broadly acknowledged, few attempts have been made to gather data for analyzing the nature and scope of private sector collaboration. This study aims to deliver empirical results based on quantitative data to gain insight into the role of private enterprise as an indispensable actor in scientific development and innovation.
Design/methodology/approach
The study aimed to deliver empirical results based on quantitative data to gain insight into the role of private enterprise as an indispensable actor in scientific development and innovation. To this end, an analysis was conducted of the contribution made by Spanish business, focusing on the 50 most active companies in terms of internationally visible scientific output, from three perspectives.
Findings
The findings provide insight into business involvement in the R&D system based on: research papers published; national, international and sectoral collaboration patterns; structural patterns; and the identification of the most prominent companies from a systematic comparison of their research results and their position in the resulting collaboration network.
Research limitations/implications
Bibliometric analyses do not measure all types of publications. Indicators are usually based on data in the Thomson Reuters databases, which are regarded as being representative of peer‐reviewed, publicly accessible papers with high international visibility and impact. The Thomson Reuters databases feature a series of advantages that make them indispensable for studies on scientific collaboration.
Originality/value
One of the core ideas of this study is the emphasis on the essential role of collaboration in improving scientific results, as borne out by the correlation between the clustering coefficient and the hybrid indicators. The findings also provide proof of the success of strategies for institutional collaboration. The foregoing shows that the application of hybrid indicators to institutional aggregates yields novel results not explored in preceding studies.

Abstract
Road transport information systems (RTISs) and their underlying digitized road networks, which were initially restricted for use in national operations only, have been enhanced and extended for use in international operations. Today operators can choose from a wide range of strategic, tactical and operational RTISs, allowing for the effective planning of international distribution. Discusses some modelling considerations behind the design and use of digitized road networks for planning and managing international distribution, in particular cross‐border or pan‐European operations. Examines the basic structure of digitized road networks and considers the benefits and problems of extending road network databases to cover several countries.
