Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to offer a conceptual framework that elaborates on how tourists’ perception of contradictory features in reviews’ factuality and comprehension – within a single hotel review and across multiple hotel reviews – trigger attitude ambivalence and psychological discomfort, which determine their behaviors – choice deferral and hotel booking intentions. It also investigates the moderating role of anticipated conflicting reactions (ACRs) through contradictory features on consumers’ attitude ambivalence.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a Chinese setting, researchers collected data from 524 inbound tourists who were the consumers of hotels in Beijing. The study used IBM Amos 23.0 to test measurement and structural models for the proposed relationships. It also used PROCESS macro 3.4 for the moderation analysis.

Findings

The findings reveal a positive association between contradictory features in reviews and the resulting ambivalence that affects consumers’ discomfort and leads to the decision to defer the choice of hotel. Conversely, consumers’ discomfort has a positive impact on the hotel booking intentions. ACRs have positive moderating effects on the associations between contradictory features and consumers’ attitude ambivalence.

Originality/value

By investigating the contradictory features in hotel reviews, this study extends the body of research on dual information processing (i.e. the heuristic–systematic model) and the literature on service management, psychological behaviors, travel intermediaries and hotel firms. Future research directions are recommended for tourism and hospitality researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

Energy-saving behavior of individuals is essential to minimize energy use and reduce the emission of toxic gases. This study's actual focus is to find out the determinants of the energy-saving behavior of individuals in the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

As a theoretical research model, the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) has been used to analyze the determinants of energy-saving intentions. A survey method is used to collect 289 valid data, and structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to analyze the data.

Findings

The final result shows that the variables attitude at home, subjective norm (SN) and descriptive norms positively impact intention to save energy at the workplace. In contrast, the construct attitude and perceived behavior control is insignificant in this research. On the other hand, the personal moral norm (PMN) is a powerful predictor of individual energy-saving intentions at the workplace.

Originality/value

This research provides insights that will help the organizations understand the behavior of individuals at the workplace for energy-saving intentions to formulate such policies that will enhance individuals' practice for energy savings.

Abstract

Purpose

The main goal of this study is to analyze how monetary debt effects firm behavior of 167 registered manufacturing companies in G-7 countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of the present study is taken from the listed firms in G-7 countries. For the building companies, the yearly financial statements of 2007–2018 have been taken from world stock exchange and Thomson Reuters Data Stream. In this study, regression analysis are directed with panel data over the period of 2007–2018 using ordinary least square summary statistics, correlation matrix and generalized method moments. Data were analyzed by employing E Views and Stata 13 software.

Findings

The significant findings of the current study indicated that fixed assets, tangible assets, taxes, net cash and profitability have positive association with debt level.

Research limitations/implications

The current work include only registered manufacturing firms in G-7 countries. Moreover, ownership types are not accounted for in this study.

Practical implications

The current analysis is an empirical investigation of antecedents of debt regarding G-7 countries with up-to-date data. Various regression inquires have been made to design the models using different measures of debt and measure of firm performance indicators. These works will assist G-7 countries firms to know the effects of identified factors on time raising debt level.

Originality/value

The current work has been finalized using genuine data of yearly reports and database. This study incorporated antecedents of debt, which have limited discourse in prior literature. Furthermore, this study explores the connection between debt level and firm performance of G-7 countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find an approximate solution of a fractional differential equation. The fractional Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation (FNWSE) is used to elucidate the solution process, which is one of the nonlinear amplitude equation, and it enhances a significant role in the modeling of various physical phenomena arising in fluid mechanics, solid-state physics, optics, plasma physics, dispersion and convection systems.

Design/methodology/approach

In Part 1, the authors adopted Mohand transform to find the analytical solution of FNWSE. In this part, the authors apply the fractional complex transform (the two-scale transform) to convert the problem into its differential partner, and then they introduce the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) to bring down the nonlinear terms for the approximate solution.

Findings

The HPM makes numerical simulation for the fractional differential equations easy, and the two-scale transform is a strong tool for fractal models.

Originality/value

The HPM with the two-scale transform sheds a bright light on numerical approach to fractional calculus.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to calculate the analytical solution or a closed-form solution for the temperature distribution in the heterogeneous casting-mould system.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors formulate and analyze the mathematical formulation of heat conduction equation in the heterogeneous casting-mould system, with an arbitrary assumption of the ideal contact at the cast-mould contact point. Then, He-Laplace method, based on variational iteration method (VIM), Laplace transform and homotopy perturbation method (HPM), is used to elaborate the analytical solution of this system. The main focus of He-Laplace method is to find the Lagrange multiplier with an easy approach which enables the implementation of HPM very smoothly and provides the series solution very close to the exact solution.

Findings

An example is considered to show that He-Laplace method provides the efficient results for calculating the temperature distribution in the casting-mould heterogeneous system. Graphical representation and error distribution represents that He-Laplace method is very simple to implement and effective for casting-mould heterogeneous system.

Originality/value

The work in this paper is original and advanced. Specially, calculation of Lagrange multiplier for casting-mould system has not been reported in the literature for this work.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims that very lately, Mohand transform is introduced to solve the ordinary and partial differential equations (PDEs). In this paper, the authors modify this transformation and associate it with a further analytical method called homotopy perturbation method (HPM) for the fractional view of Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation (NWSE). As Mohand transform is restricted to linear obstacles only, as a consequence, HPM is used to crack the nonlinear terms arising in the illustrated problems. The fractional derivatives are taken into the Caputo sense.

Design/methodology/approach

The specific objective of this study is to examine the problem which performs an efficient role in the form of stripe orders of two dimensional systems. The authors achieve the multiple behaviors and properties of fractional NWSE with different positive integers.

Findings

The main finding of this paper is to analyze the fractional view of NWSE. The obtain results perform very good in agreement with exact solution. The authors show that this strategy is absolutely very easy and smooth and have no assumption for the constriction of this approach.

Research limitations/implications

This paper invokes these two main inspirations: first, Mohand transform is associated with HPM, secondly, fractional view of NWSE with different positive integers.

Practical implications

In this paper, the graph of approximate solution has the excellent promise with the graphs of exact solutions.

Social implications

This paper presents valuable technique for handling the fractional PDEs without involving any restrictions or hypothesis.

Originality/value

The authors discuss the fractional view of NWSE by a Mohand transform. The work of the present paper is original and advanced. Significantly, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no such work has yet been published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Motivated by the enactment of non-financial reporting regulations by the European Parliament, this paper aims to investigate the impact of European Union (EU) directive 2014/95/EU on the quantity of environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures by the S&P Europe 350 index firms. This study also investigates whether the implementation of the non-financial information (NFI) reporting regulations influences the association between ESG disclosures and firms’ earnings risk.

Design/methodology/approach

To measure the impact of mandatory regulations on the quantity of ESG disclosures, this study estimates the average treatment effects using a propensity weighted sample. Then this study uses the difference-in-differences method to estimate the differences in the association between ESG disclosures and earning risk before and after implementation of the EU directive.

Findings

The results show a significant positive impact of the EU directive on the quantity of ESG disclosures for the sample European public-interest entities, which indicates that the mandatory NFI reporting requirements could boost the availability of increasingly demanded ESG related information. The enhanced association between the ESG disclosures and firms’ earnings risk during the post-directive period reveals that mandating NFI reporting also increases the quality of ESG disclosures.

Originality/value

Using the legitimacy and decision-usefulness theories, this study provides novel evidence concerning the impact of the EU directive on the quantity and quality of ESG disclosures.

Abstract

Purpose

This study, based on social exchange theory, aims to explore the association between appreciative leadership and employees' helping behaviors by investigating the mediation role of emotional reactions (pride, anxiety), and choosing organizational trust as a boundary condition between appreciative leadership and helping behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

A total sample of 285 reliable questionnaires were collected in three time lags from employees working in the Pakistani education and banking sectors. PROCESS macro using SPSS and AMOS are employed for data analyses of the proposed model.

Findings

The findings reveal that appreciative leadership has positive impacts on employees' helping behaviors and emotional reactions (pride, anxiety) mediate the relationship of appreciative leadership and employees' helping behaviors. In addition, the results show that high organizational trust strengthens the positive relationship between appreciative leadership and employees' helping behaviors.

Practical implications

This research has provided empirical proof between the relationship of appreciative leadership and helping behaviors and the findings are of great significance for managers, employees, and organizations. The study proposes that leaders should have appreciative behavior while treating their subordinates. Moreover, it is revealed that the role of organizational trust should be given more attention and importance because it is a factor moderating the employees' helping behaviors.

Originality/value

The present study, among the first empirical efforts investigating the relationship between appreciative leadership and helping behaviors, organizational trust as a moderator, enriches the existing academic literature of and provides worthy insight into the research on appreciative leadership and helping behaviors.

Learning outcomes

This case study aims to expect the following learning outcomes. A better understanding of the nature of a psychological contract being developed by employees in non-profit organizations, especially working in the areas of social development and the impact of this contract on employee commitment. Enhanced understanding of conflict of interest (personal versus public) in social development organizations and its implications. Identification of issues of task conflict versus interpersonal conflict and its impact on organizational functions. Identification of dynamics of exclusion of internal stakeholders from organizational strategic decision-making process along with its impact on organizational performance and sustainability. Devising a mechanism to avoid such conflicts in social development organizations, in particular, and organizations in general.

Case overview/synopsis

This case highlights five issues as follows: it identifies and discusses conflict of interest between privileged class possessing decision-making positions in the board of directors and implementers working at the grassroots level at ANMOL (a non-governmental organization working for poor girls education in Baluchistan-hub of China–Pakistan Economic Corridor); it discusses the basis for formulation of psychological contracts and impact of its violation on stakeholder’s commitment and motivation; it discusses the implications of difference of opinion of both stakeholders regarding organizational vision and possible drawbacks of converting task conflict into interpersonal conflict on individuals, organization and end-users; it explores implications of exclusion of key stakeholders from organizational decision-making and its impact on organizational smooth working and sustainability; and it suggests a mechanism to avoid conversion of task conflict into interpersonal conflict and smooth functioning of an organization.
