Abstract

Recurrent “methodological disputes” have haunted the social sciences, again and again polarizing the case-oriented quest for specification against the natural science inspired quest for general, high-level theory. As a consequence, too much social science research is captured in either one of two vicious circles: ever more highly specified monographic case studies or preoccupation with periodically shifting general theories. The interaction of these two circles increases the risk of widespread amnesia: as social scientists are either bogged down in a stream of cases or flying high with the most recent grand (meta-)theories, social science forgets the actual empirical knowledge that is being meticulously created, maintained and revised in the daily handicraft carried out by a growing mass of researchers.

Abstract

This chapter presents two optimization multicriteria models (bi and triple objective) using a lexicographic approach. Solved models are formulated as assignment of workers to different jobs or services of a real hospital, taking into account the available budget and requirements of each job. Presented problems have been solved using AMPL programming language with solver CPLEX v9.1, with the use of branch and bound method for mixed integer mathematical programming.

Abstract

Several years ago, North Carolina State (NC State) University Libraries technical services department, Acquisitions & Discovery (A&D), merged acquisitions, cataloging, and electronic resources management functions and staff. One intended outcome for the merger included integrating and distributing electronic resources management across all staff positions whereby staff would be trained to manage a larger portion of the life cycle for print and electronic resources. The benefits of a life cycle approach for both print and electronic resources included better staff understanding of resources; staff ownership of packages; and improved staff follow-through, consistency, and ability to troubleshoot. Key positions were reimagined to support this effort. This included the creation of a staff package manager role in the serials unit to provide oversight of e-journal packages, distribute work to staff, and create and maintain an information dashboard (the Electronic Resources Hub) for staff as well as for other stakeholder departments across the libraries. The monographs unit has recently adopted a similar integrated approach to manage NC State's growing collection of e-books. This chapter will outline A&D implementation of two package management models, one for serials and one for monographs; describe the associated tools and technologies used for support; and discuss lessons learned. Benefits will be discussed to illustrate how other libraries might transform their electronic resource management operations by using a package management strategy.

Abstract

This chapter presents two multicriteria optimization models with bi and triple objectives solved with weighted-sum approach. Solved problems are allocation of personnel in a health care institution. To deal with these problems, mixed integer programming formulation has been applied. Results have shown the impact of problem parameter change for importance of the different objectives. Presented problems have been solved using AMPL programming language with solver CPLEX v9.1, with the use of branch and bound method.
