Abstract

The applications of mathematics to the solving of factual problems should run in a certain prescribed form called a mathematical method. Whereas a mathematical method is an only scheme that is a set of mathematical means, rules, hints, procedures, etc. how to solve a factual problem on some body of data, it becomes a Cognitive Problem‐Solver after its implementation on an appropriate computer which is able to solve, if need be, by the help of man, a class of special cognitive problems corresponding to the method arising out of their background and initial knowledge. Computer and man can act here in a symbiotic manner as intelligent agents, realizing each alternately the sequence of conceptual operations prescribed by the given method. The incidental difference between the routine and creative actions of the single agents is discussed, as well as the advantages of natural and artificial intelligence in automatic problem‐solving and automatic cognition.

Abstract

Presents a model for clinic decentralization, implemented by Israel′s largest health insurance fund, Kupat Holim Clalit (KHC). The main elements of the model are: allocation of a fixed budget; delegation of authority for budget utilization and service delivery; provision of incentives for fiscal responsibility; and establishment of an internal information system. Explores expected outcomes of decentralization on the basis of an extensive literature review. Emphasizes the importance of evaluating such an organizational change, and outlines an evaluation strategy. A major concern in this strategy is to control for the effects of changes taking place at the same time‐as decentralization, and the effects of background variables such as demographic characteristics, health status, etc. For this purpose, a quasi‐experimental design was developed, based on the comparison of an experimental and control clinic, both before and after decentralization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the performance of generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) in some frequency selective fading channels. The exact symbol error rate (SER) expressions in Hoyt (Nakagami-q) and Weibull-v fading channels are derived. A GFDM transceiver simulation test bed is provided to validate the obtained analytical expressions.

Design/methodology/approach

Modern cellular system demands higher data rates, very low-latency transmissions and sensors with ultra low-power consumption. Current cellular systems of the fourth generation (4G) are not able to meet these emerging demands of future mobile communication systems. To address this requirement, GFDM, a novel multi-carrier modulation technique is proposed to satisfy the future needs of fifth generation technology. GFDM is a block-based transmission method where pulse shaping is applied circularly to individual subcarriers. Unlike traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, GFDM transmits multiple symbols per subcarrier. The authors have used the probability density function approach in solving the final analytical expressions.

Findings

Detailed analysis of GFDM performance under Hoyt-q, Weibull-v and Log-Normal Shadowing fading channels. Exact analytical formulae were derived which support the simulations carried out by authors and other authors. The exact dependence of SER on fading parameters and roll-off factor α in the raised cosine pulse shape filter was determined.

Practical implications

Development and fabrication of high-performance GFDM systems under fading channel conditions.

Originality/value

Theoretical support to simulated system performance.
