Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the situations and socio-economic and health-related factors associated with employment of older men and women in Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used the nationally representative data in 2019 with a sample size of 3,049 older persons (those aged 60 and over). This study applied logistic regression analyses.

Findings

This study found that there were significant differences in employment rates between various groups of older men and women in terms of age group, residential place, marital status and educational level. Controlling for age, education, marital status, place of residence and (in) sufficient income for daily living, the results from logistic models indicated that health issues were strongly associated with lower probability to be employed for both genders. In all tests and regression models, that age and health condition were consistently related with lower employment probability of older persons implied an important consideration in raising normal retirement ages for both men and women.

Research limitations/implications

Due to limitation of the cross-sectional data, this research could not explore how health influences older people’s employment overtime.

Practical implications

Findings of this research provide important and adaptive policy insights for Vietnam to take advantage of older workers for economic growth under an aging population.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this has been among the first studies exploring the role of health, which was presented by different indicators, determining employment of older men and women in Vietnam.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the location of regional growth poles in Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

A potential gravity model is constructed to estimate how attractive a location is in relation to other locations within a specifically defined region using spatial interpolation tools.

Findings

We present the calculated and visualized potential gravitational energy (or attractiveness) for every province showcasing regional growth poles in Vietnam.

Research limitations/implications

Graphical evidence need to be supported by statistical analysis to establish causal effects of driving factors on growth measures.

Originality/value

This is the first study to use a potential gravity model to study growth poles in Vietnam.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between academic motivations and the risk of Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) among university undergraduates and Vocational Education and Training (VET) undergraduates.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample included 402 Vietnamese university undergraduates and 250 VET undergraduates in the southern region of Vietnam. Students took part in a survey, with all participants being informed about the study’s purpose and assured that their involvement was entirely voluntary. In addition to descriptive statistics, the study employed linear regression in SPSS to examine hypotheses.

Findings

The findings indicate that, for university students, intrinsic motivation and mastery approach motivation are associated with reduced NEET risk, while performance avoidance motivation is positively linked to this tendency. In contrast, for VET students, extrinsic motivation and performance approach motivation are negatively associated with NEET risk, but mastery approach motivation may exacerbate the risk.

Originality/value

Grounded in the principles of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Achievement Goal Theory (AGT), the study proposes that university students may prioritize competence improvement, knowledge acquisition and the satisfaction of their learning interests, which they believe will help them acquire valuable knowledge beneficial for their future careers. Conversely, VET students emphasize performance and external achievement, which may enhance their outcome and reduce NEET risk. These findings offer significant theoretical and practical insights into the adoption of SDT and AGT and also provide educators or policymakers with more detailed information regarding university and VET students’ learning and development.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the relationship between digital transformation, transformational leadership style and artificial intelligence (AI) in accounting in the context of Vietnam as an emerging market. Additionally, it examines the role of transformational leadership style as a moderator in the nexus between digital transformation and AI in accounting.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected through e-survey questionnaires distributed to Vietnamese manufacturing firms following comprehensive screening to ensure representativeness of the entire population. A final sample of 510 responses was analyzed.

Findings

Using partial least squares structural equation modeling, our findings reveal that digital transformation and a transformational leadership style positively influence AI in accounting. Furthermore, transformational leadership style demonstrates a significant moderating effect on the relationship between digital transformation and AI in accounting.

Practical implications

This study discusses the benefits of incorporating AI in accounting for managerial decision-making. It underscores the critical importance of digital transformation in contemporary accounting practices, particularly with regards to AI in accounting. Consequently, managers are encouraged to embrace digital transformation, leveraging national policies, to enhance their firm's utilization of AI in accounting. Moreover, managers should focus on developing their transformational leadership style to maximize the aforementioned outcomes.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on AI in accounting by highlighting the positive effects of digital transformation and a transformational leadership style. Additionally, our findings underscore the effectiveness of a transformational leadership style and its moderating influence. Finally, this study presents a pioneering empirical investigation that integrates transformational leadership style with AI in accounting within developing economies, specifically Vietnam.

Abstract

This chapter investigates whether, and if so, how particular firms in a transition economy are involved in bribery. Built on pressure theories, we explain how the direct effects of firm characteristics and contextual characteristics determine firm bribery behavior. Entrepreneurs make choices based on perceptions of a specific pressure due to organizational characteristics (internal pressures) or due to context (external pressures). The relationship between firm characteristics, context, and bribery was estimated using unique data from a survey of 606 Vietnamese entrepreneurs. We controlled for various entrepreneurial, organizational, and industrial characteristics. The exploratory findings support firm attributes hypotheses, which is a negative relationship between firm size and bribery and a nonmonotonic U-shaped relationship between firm age and bribery. Besides, the effects of context on bribery are also found. Specifically, the result supports a positive relationship between competition and bribery and a negative relationship between the quality of the government and bribery.

Abstract

Climate change has been universally recognized as a major threat to human well-being, necessitating a comprehensive transformation of people's activities. Various measures have been proposed to contain climate change among which the green transformation grabs special attention, thanks to its desirable properties. Within the green transformation process, green tourism comes to prominence with huge potential. As one of the largest carbon emitters, the transition towards green tourism may offer substantial benefits not only for tourism companies but also for the whole economy. Yet, most studies tend to focus on the adverse effects of tourism on climate change while overlooking the potential impact of climate change on tourism. This chapter clarifies the feedback relationship between climate change and tourism and makes some recommendations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to determine the effects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on gig workers’ commitment to online platforms.

Design/methodology/approach

The study’s sample consisted of 357 gig workers in Vietnam. The data was analysed using a partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The research findings suggested that the interaction between CSR and worker commitment with gig platforms has the mediating role of empowerment and trust.

Practical implications

The gig economy is an emerging form of employment relationship, in which gig workers’ commitments are usually to the platform rather than to a sole employer. This study suggests that gig platform owners should improve CSR perception to increase employee commitment and maintain their workforce to attract new users.

Originality/value

This study developed a new framework to explain the relationship between CSR and gig work commitment, and furthermore evaluated the effects of mediating mechanisms of empowerment and trust on gig worker commitment in the gig economy platform.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine branding consistency for wine labels. The front label on wine bottles is important for identifying the brand and aiding purchase. Many brands are part of brand families, with the sub-brands linked to the overall brand family. This research provides an overview of how the front label varies across product portfolios of wine brands, noting the importance placed on branding elements and the level of consistency in their use across the brand portfolio.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose and test a new method to measure branding consistency on labels from the same brand family. Two coding frameworks were created. The first recorded the incidence of brand elements and wine attributes. The second coded wine labels within a company’s portfolio based on the consistency of various brand elements. A total of 3,000 branding elements and wine attributes from 300 wine labels were examined across 60 wine brands from a list of Australian wineries.

Findings

Grape variety, brand name and region are used across >90% of wine labels. Branding is presented more prominently than wine attributes. Sub-brand, region, price and variety did not influence branding consistency. Logo presence, logo image on label and colour elements contribute to the greatest variation in branding consistency across a product portfolio.

Originality/value

This study proposes and tests a novel method to measure branding consistency on wine labels and explores the extent to which consistent branding is used across product portfolios. Descriptive research is the first step to theory building. This study provides industry norms for attribute use and a measure of branding consistency for product portfolios giving valuable descriptive knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

The study estimates the willingness to pay for organic oranges and identifies its influencing factors among consumers in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used survey data from 413 households in the Mekong Delta from March 2022 to July 2022. The choice experiment (CE) and contingent valuation method (CVM) were employed to analyze consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP). STATA 17 software was used to analyze research data in the logit model and mixed logit model.

Findings

The research results from the CVM approach show that a number of demographic characteristics have a direct impact on WTP, such as education, educational attainment, family size, the presence of children and the elderly in the household, food safety and environmental awareness. The CE model shows product attributes that influence consumers’ WTP, such as country of origin, traceability, quality grade, organic certification, ecolabel and organic content. Both approaches show that price is the main barrier to organic orange consumption.

Research limitations/implications

The study surveyed four large cities in four provinces representing the Mekong Delta region.

Practical implications

Our study helps administrators have a deeper insight into consumer preferences and behavior, specifically the factors that affect consumers' WTP, an important indicator of demand for the success of manufacturers and marketers in developing as well as improving marketing strategies. Knowledge of a product’s WTP on behalf of (potential) customers plays an important role in many areas of marketing management, such as pricing decisions or new product development.

Social implications

Furthermore, this understanding will inform policymakers about the future of agricultural markets in Vietnam and help them better prepare for the making of sustainable agricultural policies. Develop organic agriculture to both protect human health, protect the living environment and protect the soil from degradation, ensuring sustainable agricultural production. This is also one of the measures to help people stay away from diseases to limit the social burden.

Originality/value

The study confirms that both CVM and CE models can be used to estimate WTP. However, CVM fits the overall WTP estimate, while CE is more appropriate when estimating WTP for individual scenarios through combining attributes with different levels.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to test the Kuznets curve between economic growth and child labor, along with the influence of exports, household size and rural population in the context of Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the research objective, this study applied the unit root test, bound co-integration test, and autoregressive distributive lags (ARDL) method for the period of 1972–2021.

Findings

The findings show an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and child labor indicating that at the beginning stage of economic development, child labor increases due to lower per capita household and subsequently, in the long-run of economic development, child labor decreases due to the higher per capita households. Moreover, the results also show that exports, household size and rural population have a positive influence on increasing child labor.

Research limitations/implications

The policymakers and government of Pakistan need to focus on long-term economic growth policies, ensure free quality education and cheap equipment which practices minimum manpower to reduce the threat of child labor.

Social implications

Having long-run economic growth, the government of Pakistan need to equally benefit the households and the poor population to reduce child labor and enhance the social welfare of society.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the Kuznets curve relationship between economic growth and child labor in the context of Pakistan. Moreover, this study contributes to the reduction in child labor through long-term economic growth in the context of Pakistan.
