Abstract

Previous research on routine dynamics has most commonly incorporated consideration of power, politics, and conflict by using the notion of “truce.” In this paper, the authors propose a novel approach to integrating theories of power and politics with those of routine dynamics, and illustrate it by drawing on an in-depth study of operating room routines in a general hospital. The authors show how the dynamic interaction among groups’ sources of power, interests, and strategies is linked to the performance and patterning of routines. The approach opens up the originally rather static notion of “truce” to an inherently more dynamic and processual view of the micropolitics underpinning routines. The authors contribute to the routine dynamics literature by showing how and why the micropolitical context may influence, undermine, or reproduce the patterning and performing of organizational routines following a change initiative, and more broadly by illustrating an approach to integrating political considerations into the theory of routine dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

To meet the needs of under-resourced, rural schools where teacher attrition is high, this case study examined how a school–university partnership strengthened teacher and leader abilities to support deeper learning for students.

Design/methodology/approach

This research focused on a 17-year collaborative partnership between one rural school district and a university research and outreach organization to develop deeper learning experiences for students through shared and supportive leadership and learning of teachers and leaders. The researchers utilized documents, field notes and interviews with administrators to validate the data.

Findings

The study’s findings suggest that participation in authentic, researched-based professional development through the partnership improved the skills of leaders and teachers to support deeper learning for students. This partnership heightened teacher and leader capacity to promote and support continued change and sustainability.

Originality/value

This case study explored how one university center collaboratively engaged with a district by sharing research and strategies to support the development of leaders and teachers to create deeper learning for students. Through these experiences, the district evolved its deeper learning system and improved its organizational effectiveness, leadership development and learning for all.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, we applied the strategy-as-practice (SAP) framework to analyse strategic communication practices. SAP implies approaching strategy as something that organisational members do and is useful for understanding the tensions between emergence and formalisation and between planning and improvisation that characterise the everyday communication work of communication practitioners.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on an ethnographic study of a record company and on qualitative interviews with various actors from the music industry.

Findings

Tensions exist between the emergence of inputs from active consumers that require flexibility and attempts to strategically formalise and continuously adapt plans and encourage consumers to act in anticipated ways. The findings revealed five strategic communication practices—meetings, working in the office, gathering and analysing consumer engagement and related data, collaboration and storytelling—that practitioners used to conduct strategic communication and navigate the tensions.

Originality/value

The study contributes to understanding the role of strategic communication practices in contemporary organisations and how practitioners manage the tensions within them. The study shows that an SAP approach can account for improvisation and emergence, as well as planning and formalisation. It also shows how SAP resonates with emergent and agile strategic communication frameworks.
