Abstract

In many Third World countries tourism is an economic activity the importance of which can hardly be ignored 1). Thus it is obvious that the governments of those countries, besides paying attention to the usual sectors such as agriculture, industry, mining, transport and communication, public health and hygiene and education, should also engage in sectoral programs with regard to tourism. Since “a sector comprises, for the most part, the producing or operating units in the economy that share a common function or output” 2), tourism lays claim to a sectoral approach. In tourism there clearly exists a common function of activities, comprising both Services and production of goods ‐Pertot speaks of a mixed commodity‐service exchange 3) — for the sake of the tourist. The separate activities together constitute the compound tourist product.

Abstract

Gives an in depth view of the strategies pursued by the world’s leading chief executive officers in an attempt to provide guidance to new chief executives of today. Considers the marketing strategies employed, together with the organizational structures used and looks at the universal concepts that can be applied to any product. Uses anecdotal evidence to formulate a number of theories which can be used to compare your company with the best in the world. Presents initial survival strategies and then looks at ways companies can broaden their boundaries through manipulation and choice. Covers a huge variety of case studies and examples together with a substantial question and answer section.

Abstract

The interdisciplinary symposium on the theme “TOURISM AND THE ENVIRONMENT”, centered, up on the ecological aspects of conflicting situations, and had gathered for Roundtable discussions during the Eighth International Tourism Festival “FERIAL '86” a significant number of prominent scientific and expert workers and public figures, all possessing adequate qualifications and a profound feeling of moral and expert responsibility for discussing the present state and agreeing on conclusions about the present ecological problems in tourism.

Abstract

A firm is technically efficient when it produces the maximum level of output for a given level of input on the assumption that technology is fixed. Although the above definition of technical efficiency has been around for decades, economists have, for the most part, been estimating average production functions (i.e. production functions that assume that all firms are technically efficient except for random noise), and then proceeding to make inferences regarding the potential of firms from this average production function.

Abstract

Points out that the pitting resistance of welds in stainless steels is often inferior to the parent metals, and is an important factor to consider during the selection of materials of service in corrosive environments. Notes that an empirical pitting resistance equivalent (PRE), often expressed as PRE = % Cr + 3.3 × % Mo + 16 × % N, is used to rank different parent metals and that during welding, a number of metallurgical‐and surface‐related reactions take place locally, which make it impossible to predict the pitting corrosion resistance by a single expression. Reviews the effects of oxides, slag and other weld defects on the pitting resistance of welds in stainless steels, and highlights the importance of including the properties of fabricated areas into the life cycle cost (LCC) analyses.

Abstract

THE title of this short paper is somewhat of a misnomer, as the German Volks bibliothek is not the same as an English Public Library. As Dr. Schultze says: “When we speak of an English Public Library we know exactly what is meant, but the German Volks bibliothek does not convey any definite impression. Too often it still means a very small collection of books, probably gifts which are accessible to borrowers at certain hours each week. As a rule, the revenue is so trifling that after paying the small working costs there is little or nothing left for buying books.” Taking, therefore, the term Public Library for the sake of convenience, we may assume that the first Public Library in Germany was opened in Hamburg, in 1529, as the result of Luther's recommendation (1524) “that good libraries, especially in the large towns, should be established.” At the beginning of the 18th century, a number of free libraries were established, these were usually connected with churches and schools, yet their very name “free” seemed an invitation to everyone to share the treasures they contained. These libraries were principally in central Germany and Saxony.

Abstract

Two events caused the world of Swiss tourism to sit up and take notice in 1988: the rejection of the collective employment agreement in the hotel industry by the delegates of the Swiss Hotel‐Association and the turbulence in the Kuoni travel firm in connection with the replacement of Jack Bolli by Michel Crippa at the head of the Kuoni AG, which is considered to be an international front‐runner firm.
