Abstract

The ability to sift through the ever‐increasing amounts of information made available online to find quality and accurate data is becoming more important every day. Using credibility, accuracy, reasonableness, support, and uniqueness as criteria for Web site evaluation, the authors analyse five Web sites in an effort to determine the value and quality of the information. This article discusses the evaluation of Web sites dedicated to Chinese archaeology, and also points to six main characters of online resources for the subject area. In addition, questions are raised concerning the extent to which online Chinese archaeological resources can advance general awareness of the field and contribute to a growing body of knowledge. The authors hope this article sheds light on some of the challenges that need to be overcome when attempting to present this information to the global community.

Abstract

This paper examines electronic resources, including journals and databases for Chinese studies, collected in North American East Asian academic libraries. A small survey of 26 East Asian academic libraries in North America was conducted in May 2003 in order to learn more about collection development practices and accessibility issues for Chinese electronic resources. Based on the eight‐question survey, 57 per cent of the responding libraries have collection development policies for their electronic resources, 36 per cent do not, while 7 per cent were unsure. Budget constraints, time constraints, lack of technical support, lack of training, and Chinese/English computer operating system incompatibilities were given as the top five constraints in the collection of Chinese electronic resources and providing access to them. After analyzing the collection, classification, and accessibility issues, the author provides some suggestions on the future development of Chinese electronic resources in East Asian academic libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the dimensions used by young consumers to evaluate effective online influencers; determine the impact of demographic segmentation – that is, gender, behavioral segmentation and whether young consumers often follow the advice of online influencers to make a purchase – on the evaluative dimensions. The results will inform advertisers regarding the types of online influencers that they should feature to endorse their products to create desirable promotion effects.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted a multistage method. This study first conducted eight focus groups with 48 participants between 18 and 24 years of age to explore their evaluation of online influencers. This study then conducted a survey with a questionnaire developed from the focus group results. This study used convenience sampling and administered the questionnaire to 475 participants (mean age, 19.5 years).

Findings

The results of factor analysis revealed seven dimensions used by young consumers to evaluate online influencers. The most salient dimensions were credibility, appearance and content production techniques. The results of t-testing also show that gender and behavioral segmentation variables had an impact on these evaluative dimensions in the four tested product categories.

Practical implications

This study provides advertisers with a set of criteria to select appropriate online influencers in various advertising settings, such as the promotion of gender-specific products, and in various product categories that target young consumer markets.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the dimensions used by young consumers to evaluative online influencers in relation to product endorsement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors that influence mainland Chinese film tourists’ behavioural intention in accepting an augmented reality (AR) feature film character-related tour APP (an IfilmAR-tour-APP) based on an extension of unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model.

Design/methodology/approach

Systematic sampling was used to collect data; 360 valid questionnaires were collected from mainland Chinese film tourists visiting Macau. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to analyse the data.

Findings

The findings indicated that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, celebrity involvement and personal innovativeness have a significant impact on mainland Chinese film tourists’ behavioural intention in accepting the IfilmAR-tour-APP, while facilitating conditions do not significantly affect tourists’ behavioural intention. Furthermore, the study revealed that effort expectancy, celebrity involvement and personal innovativeness positively influence performance expectancy in the use of an IfilmAR-tour-APP.

Practical implications

The findings of this study provide implications for AR tour APP developers which will help them to enhance their designs, and for the governments of tourist destinations to formulate their promotion strategies in developing niche tourism.

Originality/value

This study extended the application of UTAUT to tourism technology by introducing two personality traits in the context of AR tour APPs for film-induced tourism. This research contributes to niche tourism research by linking niche tourism and tourism technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that explain the acceptance of self-service ordering systems (SOSs) for restaurants and to explore the effects of “self-service system service quality” (SSQ) and “interpersonal service quality” (ISQ) on the acceptance factors extended from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model.

Design/methodology/approach

This study targets customers who have recently used SOSs to order foods in middle-class restaurants. In total, 402 valid survey samples were obtained. Partial least squares (PLS) analysis was used to examine the factors of user acceptance of using SOSs.

Findings

The results of the PLS-SEM analysis indicate that SSQ has a significant effect on accuracy expectancy, speed expectancy and effort expectancy; ISQ has a significant effect on accuracy expectancy, speed expectancy, effort expectancy and facilitating conditions; and accuracy expectancy, speed expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions and budget expectancy significantly influence user acceptance of SOSs. Furthermore, user experiences moderate the effect of speed expectancy and effort expectancy on user acceptance.

Originality/value

This study introduces three technology acceptance factors (accuracy, speed and budget) for researchers to consider in the future. It also extends the knowledge about the human service factor when middle-class restaurants adopt self-service technologies (SSTs). Recommendations are provided for system developers to improve the system quality of SSTs and service staff to rethink their roles in adopting SSTs in the service industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to construct a two-step model to examine how passive (mental imagery and immersion) and active (engagement) responses build a spatial presence in 360° virtual tours by constructing the spatial situation. This study further tests the difference between first-time and repeat users in building a spatial presence.

Design/methodology/approach

Systematic sampling was applied to collect data. Valid data from 355 participants were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling.

Findings

The results show that other than the direct effect of engagement on spatial presence, the spatial situation partially mediates the effects on the spatial presence of two passive responses. Through comparative analysis of the three models, this study confirms that the two-step model provides a better fit for the data. For repeat users, the spatial situation is the major source of spatial presence.

Practical implications

The results offer suggestions for destination marketers to develop effective virtual tours to induce the spatial presence of repeat users and first users.

Originality/value

This study contributes a two-step model for researchers to consider the mediating role of the spatial situation in further studies in the context of virtual reality (VR) tourism. This study also helps researchers design their future VR research in tourism by elucidating the roles of passive and active psychological responses in determining spatial presence.
