Abstract

Union catalogues form the main instrument of interlending in the Netherlands. The most important ones are maintained by the Royal Library in The Hague, the Technical University at Delft, and the Library of the Agricultural University at Wageningen. On‐line library automation will have an increasing impact on interlending, and the challenge is being met by these libraries by setting up an on‐line catalogue of serials, monographs and conference publications combined with an on‐line system for handling interlibrary loan requests developed by the Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation (PICA). The first phase — the serials system — came on‐line in May 1983, and it is hoped the monograph system will be in operation by early 1986.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to suggest that cataloguing departments and agencies could benefit from Fourth Industrial Revolution and advanced technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

A desk research based on literature review extracted from different information sources. Literature was interpreted based on the search of the researcher on key concepts of the topic.

Findings

Literature indicates new trends in cataloguing and how technologies could be incorporated into cataloguing.

Practical implications

This study can inform policies on artificial intelligence adoption in cataloguing.

Originality/value

The 4IR and artificial intelligence does not often occur in cataloguing literature. Linking 4IR and advanced technologies, artificial intelligence and robotic science in cataloguing could inform policies and practice in cataloguing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the ways in which online cataloguing is used to provide twenty-first century library and information services to a university community in a developing country, together with the challenges and prospects of such an application. The paper aims to examine the use of the internet to catalogue and classify library materials in the University of Ilorin Library. It looks at the use of the Library of Congress Catalogue in copy cataloguing. This paper also discusses the use of Koha, a free library integrated software to classify and catalogue library resources in the University of Ilorin Library.

Design/methodology/approach

The methods used are participant observation, interviews with the senior librarians in the library and visits to another library that uses Koha software. Periodical and online articles were also used to gather information to support this study.

Findings

The major problem is incessant power failure and the library is planning to get a heavy and very powerful inverter and generator that can stop the disruption of work resulting from the intermittent power supply. Another setback in using Koha is that the cataloguing is being done online unlike Biblofile which is done offline.

Research limitations/implications

The researchers visited only one university library in the course of the research. This is due to financial constraints.

Practical implications

Information communication technology training must be taken seriously for librarians who want to remain relevant in this age of information technology.

Originality/value

This study about Koha software usage is the first of its kind to be carried out in the University of Ilorin Library and will be useful to other university libraries.

Abstract

The card catalogue has as its prime objective the provision of multiple access points to the library's collection. To achieve this objective, card entries are made by author, title and subject headings. Within the main body of the catalogue card, other items of information are included in varying amounts of detail by librarians to aid the reader in locating and identifying a given material he may wish to consult within the library's holdings.

Abstract

The union catalogue of monographs published before 1976 is maintained by the Dutch National Library in card form and contains five to six million records from 95 libraries. The extent to which these records need to be converted into machine‐readable form depends on several factors. Does the holding library still exist? Does the holding library participate in the Pica shared cataloguing system and has it converted its own card catalogue? Did the holding library convert its card catalogue using another library system? Are the cards in the union catalogue still reliable or did the holding library discard volumes from its collection without notifying the National Library? A feasibility study showed that the holding data of 59 libraries could be removed without any further processing; this amounts to 72.6 per cent of the cards. For the remaining 27.4 per cent of the cards from 36 libraries, priorities for the retrospective conversion of their data in the union catalogue were determined.

Abstract

I am personally convinced that in due course a European union catalogue will come into being—and indeed I believe that the matter is now again under discussion. It may therefore be useful (or at least historically interesting) to give some account of the abortive and almost wholly unknown project for which I was responsible ten years ago.

Abstract

Introduction This paper will examine the possibility of constructing an online international union catalog from machine readable entries originating in different countries. Benefits of such a union catalog would be extensive, since it would greatly increase availability of library resources internationally and reduce rates of rise of processing costs in participating libraries. The discussion of catalog entries will be limited to descriptive cataloging and will include only title and author elements, only catalog entries originating in different language regions, and only catalog entries in machine readable form.

Abstract

The catalogues of printed books of the British Museum, the Bibliothèque Nationale, and, since the War, the Library of Congress, have become such indispensable tools for scholars, librarians and booksellers that it is difficult to imagine the situation before these fundamental works of reference appeared. Although Professor Archer Taylor, in his latest work, Book Catalogues, their Varieties and Uses (the Newberry Library, Chicago) covers the whole range of book catalogues existing in printed form he devotes a generous part of his survey to the catalogues that appeared before the mid‐19th century, most of which are today neglected except by a few specialists. Professor Taylor has convincingly argued that, when treated with due allowance for their limitations, these catalogues can still have much to tell us.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to provide an Indian perspective on copy cataloguing and its current position in libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on the experiences of visiting various colleges and universities across the country. The paper explains copy cataloguing and its sources available to the Indian libraries for retrospective conversion.

Findings

Copy cataloguing in India is not widespread. The supply of a “ready cataloguing” in MARC format by Indian publishers and supply agents is also not widely available.

Practical implications

Copy cataloguing features have been implemented into the SOUL software and the IndCat, an online union catalogue of Indian universities for the Indian libraries.

Originality/value

It is observed that copy cataloguing features have never been explained in one place for Indian libraries. The information provided in the paper will help the community at large.

Abstract

The BLL has recently been involved in the microfilming of library catalogues. Among those which have been filmed is the National Central Library's union catalogue of pre‐1801 monographs. With the removal of the NCL to Boston Spa this catalogue was transferred to the Reference Division of the British Library with a view to it being developed into a full scale bibliographic catalogue for publication. The information contained in the catalogue was still required for interlending purposes, and it was decided to produce a film version for use at Boston Spa.
