Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to present a scientometric analysis of the Proceedings of the McMaster World Congress on the Management of Intellectual Capital and Innovation for the 1996‐2008 period in order to better understand the evolution and identity of the discipline.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques were applied to determine author distribution, country, individual and institutional‐level productivity rankings, and employed methodologies.

Findings

It was found that an average manuscript was written by 1.73 authors. The USA, Canada and the UK were the three most productive countries, which is consistent with prior KM/IC productivity research. Most productive institutions were the University of Calgary (Canada), Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Spain) and Universidad de Oviedo (Spain). The most productive individuals were James Falconer, Jose Maria Viedma Marti and Scott Erickson. Lotka's α, which represents the degree of conference delegate retention rate, was established as 2.7. Case studies were the most frequent method of inquiry, followed by framework development and literature reviews. Surveys and usage of secondary data were the leading empirical methodologies. Interviews, laboratory experiments, and field studies were under‐represented.

Research limitations/implications

The findings offer valuable insights into the state and development of the KM/IC discipline and shed some light on its identity.

Practical implications

Scientometric analyses are of primary interest for academic researchers and therefore the practical implications of this study are limited.

Originality/value

The research reported is among the first to investigate the issue of the KM/IC discipline identity from a descriptive perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The global knowledge economy has put the focus on the regional aspects of economic growth. It has also shifted development perspectives from output to input factors as production has become more knowledge‐based. Researchers have sought a better understanding of how firms, universities and government institutions deploy their core resources and competencies and interact to accrue economic growth. The “Region's intellectual capital benchmarking system” (RICBS) is a strategic assessment methodology designed to tackle these issues. It also aims to avoid potential lock‐ins and other institutional inefficacies that have proven pernicious, especially to developing countries' economic growth and development prospects.

Design/methodology/approach

Harvests on national/regional innovation systems theoretical framework and Viedma's methodology to evaluate the microclusters' capacity for competitiveness.

Findings

Building a region's innovation capacity demands an integrated and comprehensive framework to understand its underpinnings at all three micro, meso and macro levels. It is just as important to fulfill the requirements for its overall effectiveness – i.e. an in‐depth diagnosis of the region's economic, technical and institutional foundations and the key stakeholders committed to a long‐term vision, as well as a systematic and critical evaluation of the whole.

Practical implications

Provides development agencies with a tool for promoting innovation‐based policies and thus a more competitive allocation of resources.

Originality/value

Assumes that benchmarking can contribute significantly to grounding the analysis of a region's innovation and competencies building capacity and to allocating resources more effectively within the economy. It also focuses on the potential of an evaluation system to overcome undesirable lock‐ins and path‐dependencies.

Abstract

In accordance with the resource‐based view and the activity‐based view, sustainable competitive advantages are mainly due to core knowledge that, together with tangible and (especially) intangible resources, develops competitive products and services through the appropriate activities and processes of the value chain. Strategic knowledge benchmarking system (SKBS) is a knowledge‐based strategic management information system framework that has been built drawing direct inspiration from both the above‐mentioned perspectives and tries to refine the classic strategic SWOT analysis. This paper carefully describes OSKBS, one of the two versions of SKBS, and shows the main benefits to be obtained from the systematic use of OSKBS. The SKBS system has been successfully piloted in more than 40 small and medium size European enterprises.

Abstract

In knowledge economy, companies and organizations build sustainable competitive advantages not only relying on their internal intellectual capital but also on the intellectual capital of other companies, organizations and institutions and specifically on those of the cluster, microcluster or territory where the company is located. This kind of intellectual capital, basically external and of a relational nature is one of the main constituents of the networked organization and from now on will be called as Social Capital because it is embedded in the social fabric (texture) of the nearby environment. Social Capital Benchmarking System is both a new management method and a new management tool, that identifies, audits and benchmarks the resources and capabilities or the social capital, existing in alternative cluster locations that are necessary to develop the specific network organization that each particular business model requires. The system has been successfully piloted in five European enterprises.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the thematic content of research addressing the relation between board of directors (BoD) and business transformation (BT) to obtain better understanding of status and to derive future areas of study.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reviews literature through a bibliometric analysis based on co-occurrence of articles published in Web of Science Core Collection ™ (WoS) between 1990 and 2022, identifying key concepts, setting network of relations and identifying the strategic importance of clusters of concepts. Findings and implications are discussed, future lines of research are presented and limitations are noted.

Findings

Thematic research on boards addressing transformation shifted from the analysis of individuals' traits to an organizational approach with majority of research centered on the role of boards under different theories and the consequences of strategic changes on firm's performance. Further research is around gender diversity, sustainability and the moderating role of ownership structure and business culture.

Research limitations/implications

Some limitations are also noted. This analysis considered articles indexed by WoS for Q1+Q2 publications as source of literature, while including others such as Scopus would increase knowledge base. Also, to identify main streams of research, the authors considered keywords with cumulative occurrence spanning from 30% to 40% while increasing this percentage would add terms that might improve precision to the connections among keywords. Other techniques could have been used such as co-citation or bibliographic coupling, although the authors find these as better suited to investigate the basic structure behind the foundational knowledge of the topic while the authors’ intention was to understand the positioning of study fields regarding the degree of research progress.

Practical implications

This paper presents some practical implications for future researchers. Those who wish to leverage previous evidence to address new research questions might look into principal themes covering BoD dynamics and composition to exert CG, and the relation between strategic decisions and performance measured by different variables. Those who wish to position their research as new findings to shed light on dilemmas, might find opportunities in the fields of climate change-sustainability, R&D for growth and innovation under the perspective of intangible assets.

Originality/value

This paper, is the first to the best of the authors’ knowledge, to identify research clusters for the intersection of boards and transformation and to determine their stage of development.
