The world is dominated by brands. Almost everywhere we look and in most things we do, brands touch upon and influence our lives. According to Rita Clifton – Chairman of the world’s leading brand consultancy Interbrand – brands are one of the most stable of corporate assets, “demonstrably the most powerful and sustainable wealth creators in the world”.

The Ministry of Health Report, No. 39, upon the Determination of Benzoic Acid in Foodstuffs, which has just been issued, gives a review of the existing literature dealing with the determination of benzoic acid in foodstuffs, the analytical difficulties involved being fully discussed. The Report deals not only with fruit and vegetable products, in which benzoic acid is permitted under the Regulations, but includes also other foods such as milk, fats and meat products in which benzoic acid has, at times, been used as a preservative. In conclusion, a detailed description is given of a new method which has been employed for the determination of benzoic acid in certain fruits and vegetables.

The purpose of this survey is to find a significant sample of reference resources for electrical engineering as they are presented in subject-specific LibGuides.

The survey is based on a detailed observation and collection of sources designated as Reference Resources in LibGuides, titles found were compiled and organized.

The results are substantial; they offered a body of specialized resources, which includes e-book collections, dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedias and other resources that are important to electrical engineering students and researchers.

A considerable amount of resources were found; nevertheless, they represent the resources found in a randomly selected sample of LibGuides; therefore, the result is limited to the group of libraries selected.

The results of this survey are valuable to subject librarians interested in comparing resources with a pool of libraries and to discover titles that can be of interest to their collections.

The work is original, as this is the first paper publishing the results of a survey of electrical engineering guides.

In June 1996, Stafford Beer and Heinz von Foerster were invited to Colombia to contribute to a number of events, among others to a symposium about second‐order auditing organized by the National Controller's Office of Colombia in Cartagena de Indias. As part of the occasion, they visited Mompox, a colonial town in the delta of the Magdalena river. During that trip, the author met Stafford and from there on she developed a special relationship with him, similar to that she already had with Heinz. The sad death of both great men of cybernetics within a short period of time was the origin of this tribute.

BOOKS are among the greatest and most wonderful achievements of human genius, they are also a powerful means of struggle for progress. The book accompanies man all his life; it is a creation of his brain and soul. It reflects the life of mankind and is the result of collective efforts of author and publisher, type‐setter and illustrator. But foremost a book is always and everywhere a social and political phenomenon. One of the most apt evaluations of the book was given by V. I. Lenin in 1917, when he was known to state to A. V. Lunacharsky, “The book is a great force indeed”.

The analyses of trends in prosecutions under the Food and Drugs Act, 1955 and the various regulations, which we have prepared every two years or so, covering a three‐month period, have been so much appreciated by readers, both in the administration and the industry itself, that we have prepared a more extended survey, covering the whole of 1966. The survey, as before, takes the form of a month‐by‐month analysis of reports of legal proceedings received by us from all parts of the country, and as formerly records the prosecutions under similar groupings; cases under Section 2, subdivided into those relating to compositional offences, the presence of foreign bodies and those relating to mouldy food: false description cases under Section 6 of the Merchandise Marks Acts; Section 8, the unfit food provision, also subdivided with special categories for foreign bodies and mouldy food; Section 32, milk cases; cases under the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1960, with smoking offences separated; the Milk and Dairies Regulations, consisting almost entirely of prosecutions under Reg. 27, Meat Regulations, Preservative Regulations, Colouring Matter in Food Regulations, etc.

Lager beer is a bottom fermentation beer which is characterised by having in general a low alcohol content and a high proportion of extractive matters in comparison with the top fermentation beer that is still, by far, the main brew of this country. It may be pointed out that in the top fermentation process the variety of yeast which is used rises to the top of the liquid in the fermentation vat. In the bottom process the yeast sinks to the bottom, and fermentation takes place at a lower temperature. Lager has been described, among other things, as “liquid food” as an aperitif; as a non‐intoxicant. It would therefore seem to possess a rare combination of good qualities. While we submit that excessive praise may be sometimes almost as effective as an agent of damnation as faint praise, there is no doubt that genuine lager beer is a thoroughly wholesome drink.

Problem librarianship in weeding book collections has reached epidemic proportions with serious short‐ and long‐range ramifications for everyone, especially for scholars in the humanities. Although a number of books and articles in recent years have set forth eminently sensible rationales for such weeding, deselection, or deaccessioning (as it is variously called), in actual practice pragmatism shaped by funding exigencies and a new business mentality among librarians generally pro‐duces disturbing results. The business viewpoint has brought fundamental shifts in how things are done, and as Larry N. Osborne suggests in “Hassling Memorials” (Library Journal 662, March 15, 1978), many librarians feel that “strategically the best thing they can do is load the board with young management types.” Such trustees, most of whom slid through school without Latin and maybe without French, and without much history, art, music, or literature either, are doubtless akin to many of the young librarians themselves, if you view the MLS as a weak academic credential. For managers, performance is the bottom line, and it is reflected in numbers—numbers of book circulated, numbers of books requested that are available in a given library, numbers of users of one collection of books within a library vis‐a‐vis other collections, even the cost of keeping a book in the library for a year figured by dividing the library budget by the number of volumes on the shelves. Not many people want to know that it costs $2.47 to keep Athenaeus on the shelves if nobody is reading Athenaeus. Such managers may value an attractive dust jacket over what is inside the book, preferring a small, easy‐to‐carry corrupt text over a ponderous definitive edition.
