Abstract

FREQUENT, INFORMAL, man‐to‐man, contact. This is the essence of the Safety Contact Scheme, recently introduced at Tanqueray Gordon & Company Limited, makers of the world famous Gordon's Gin. Under the scheme, Managers and Supervisors select a topic concerned with Safety, and make a point of discussing it either with individuals, or with two or three people from their departments. When everyone in a department has been covered, the topic is changed.

Abstract

Future requirements for the teaching of corrosion science were outlined by Dr. T. P. Hoar at a recent meeting of the Society of Chemical Industry's Corrosion Group. ‘It all boils down to “who should teach whom what?”’ he said. Universities, technical colleges and junior technical colleges should all provide some facilities for the teaching of corrosion science and it would be desirable to include some very elementary instruction in schools. Referring to ‘whom,’ Dr. Hoar considered that engineers are unsuitable recipients of corrosion science teaching. He was strongly of the opinion that fundamental principles should be inculcated at universities and technical colleges and questioned whether a smattering of knowledge of the subject is a good thing in the long run. ‘You cannot get a fully‐blown corrosion scientist except by a fully‐disciplined course,’ he said. It was necessary not to lose sight of fundamental research, and he suggested there should be more getting together between those who deal with ‘beaker corrosion’ and those who deal with ‘process corrosion.’

Abstract

ORGANIZATIONS operating in a city which earned the phrase ‘Shipshape and Bristol fashion’ have a formidable reputation to maintain. So much is expected of them. One at least need have no fears on those grounds if a first visit to its Annual Conference is typical of previous ones. It is the Department of Work Study and Staff Training of the Engineering Employers' West of England Association.

Abstract

Very little Australian literature looks at women as leaders in education. Using theoretical viewpoints emerging out of a biographical and historical analysis, it is possible to construct a more inclusive model of leadership which includes both men and women in the past. Mapping such a process historically and biographically can give a detailed assessment of the social, historical and political dimensions of particular women leaders′ lives and also develop a theoretical framework, which gives equal status to the leadership experiences more common to women. Presents a historical narrative where recording lives raises critical questions at the same time as it unearths new evidence of the history of women educationists in Australia.

Abstract

Monsanto is facing an uncertain near-term financial outlook, and this case challenges students to generate an operating forecast (income statement and balance sheet operating accounts). The case naturally lends itself to sensitivity analysis related to sales growth assumptions. Suitable for MBA and undergraduate learners, it covers the basics of forecasting without introducing the complexities associated with financing. A teaching note is available.

Abstract

In the animal world the presence of entropy necessitates contest. Among the non‐human mammals the contests are overwhelmingly inter‐specific. On the other hand the bulk of human contests are intra‐specific. They bring about a dissipation in human systems akin to that brought on by noise in natural systems (“human noise”). Just as the engineering of natural systems hinges on the successful understanding of noise and its filtration, so the successful administration of human systems must hinge on the understanding of human noise and its filtration. In this paper, after demarcating the concepts of communication, teleology, contest and inquiry and their stochastic foundations, we shall (1) show that post‐Weber administrative theory, unlike the more classical, is delinquent in its neglect of human noise, (2) list the lacunae in the prevailing theory, (3) explain the greater efficiency of the administration of warfare in contrast to that of more humane projects, (4) expound the Parkinson maxims on the human noise specific to a Weberian bureaucracy, (5) show how this together with widespread corruption results in ineffective government, and finally, (6) suggest how systems analysts might approach this problem.

Abstract

THE aircraft industry in the past has always had to rely on the wind tunnel facilities of the Ministry of Supply for such testing as was beyond the scope of the individual firms' tunnels, which are usually small. The new tunnel of the Aircraft Research Association Ltd., opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on May 4, is the result of the first attempt at co‐operative action between firms in the industry.
