Abstract

This paper describes the use of the incremental flow formulation for the numerical analysis of forming processes. This formulation is based on the approximation of the flow type of constitutive equations by means of an algorithmic equation based on geometry changes over a timestep. The resulting equilibrium equations are functions of nodal positions. Hence geometrical constraints such as contact and incompressibility can be enforced in an exact manner. Two types of incremental equations leading to first and second order time approximations are presented. The more accurate case is based on the incremental logarithmic stretches. Several examples will be used to demonstrate the validity of the method.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new stabilised low-order finite element methodology for large strain fast dynamics.

Design/methodology/approach

The numerical technique describing the motion is formulated upon the mixed set of first-order hyperbolic conservation laws already presented by Lee et al. (2013) where the main variables are the linear momentum, the deformation gradient tensor and the total energy. The mixed formulation is discretised using the standard explicit two-step Taylor-Galerkin (2TG) approach, which has been successfully employed in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Unfortunately, the results display non-physical spurious (or hourglassing) modes, leading to the breakdown of the numerical scheme. For this reason, the 2TG methodology is further improved by means of two ingredients, namely a curl-free projection of the deformation gradient tensor and the inclusion of an additional stiffness stabilisation term.

Findings

A series of numerical examples are carried out drawing key comparisons between the proposed formulation and some other recently published numerical techniques.

Originality/value

Both velocities (or displacements) and stresses display the same rate of convergence, which proves ideal in the case of industrial applications where low-order discretisations tend to be preferred. The enhancements introduced in this paper enable the use of linear triangular (or bilinear quadrilateral) elements in two dimensional nearly incompressible dynamics applications without locking difficulties. In addition, an artificial viscosity term has been added into the formulation to eliminate the appearance of spurious oscillations in the vicinity of sharp spatial gradients induced by shocks.

Abstract

Purpose

Balancing exploration and exploitation is a strategic challenge for technology-based companies striving to successfully implement ambidexterity in rapidly changing markets. This study aims to look at the extent in which corporate universities can be instrumental in the cross-functional deployment of the resources, capabilities and experience needed to achieve organizational ambidexterity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is the result of a single case study of ZTE University in China. Data from archives, direct observations, and semi-open interviews have been triangulated and analyzed with pattern matching technique.

Findings

This study analyzed the development of capabilities allowing the strategic combinations of exploration and exploitation, and to clearly witness how the corporate university was dynamically linked with those development.

Originality/value

The empirical results offer new insights on the most relevant capabilities for technology-based companies and notably those that are more likely to be exploited through a corporate university.

Abstract

Purpose

This work aims to develop a configurational model to explain how relational trust and combinative capability can jointly improve the relationship between innovativeness and firm's performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical study was developed on a sample of 224 companies in the footwear industry in Spain. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses in order to confirm the proposed configurational model.

Findings

The partial results demonstrate the significant effect of relational trust on the innovativeness-performance relationship but, unexpectedly, reveals the non-significant effect of combinative capability on this relationship. The triple interaction effects model provides new insights into the positive effect of combinative capability on the innovativeness-performance relationship once firms gain relational trust from their contacts.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-sectional nature of the study imposes a limitation on the results. Nevertheless, due to the detailed information required to achieve the aims of the research, a longitudinal study could be excessively complex. In any event, the cross-sectional approach of the study accomplishes the proposed aim.

Practical implications

Managers should involve the employees of the firm in order to improve the effectiveness of continuous innovation, encouraging them to establish trusting relationships with external agents and contributing to combine the relevant external knowledge with the individual and collective knowledge available in the firm.

Originality/value

This work contributes to the existing literature with a more complete picture of the influence of innovativeness on firms' performance, highlighting that performance is affected by the coherence of the configuration of innovativeness, relational trust and combination capability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of Markovian transitions related to the economic convergence among countries. Thus, the paper aims to develop an overview of several classical approaches, including an analysis of fallacies exposed through the literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The number of modes in the distribution of the RGDPL for 100 countries in the period from 1986 to 2000 is calculated. Next, the results obtained from the relevant transition matrices are discussed and the existence of twin peaks in the distribution of income is analyzed. Finally, the adequacy of both Markovian and (time) homogeneity hypotheses in connection with the stochastic process that underlies income distribution is studied.

Findings

The results across the period 1986‐2000 show the evolution of countries into convergence clubs, instead of the existence of economic convergence.

Originality/value

The paper discusses two important issues on the convergence hypothesis. First, the discretization process really matters. If quartiles or quintiles are used the ergodic distribution does not show twin peaks because the process shows an equiprobabilistic ergodic (stationary) distribution in the long term. Second, the twin peaks results need a Markov (time) homogeneous chain as a model for the underlying income process, and then Chapman‐Kolmogorov's equation must be satisfied. However, the paper finds empirical evidences of failure in such an argument.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the economic impact of Covid in Spain and propose policies to deal with them.

Design/methodology/approach

Not relevant.

Findings

The pandemic is having a very severe effect, which varies across sectors and regions. Given the severity of the problem, a comprehensive policy strategy is needed. Specific proposals about such a strategy are made, distinguishing between the short and the long run.

Originality/value

It provides a discussion about the main measures that have been taken to mitigate the economic consequences of Covid in Spain and about what else should be done.

Abstract

Purpose

Football is at once both a global sport and one that is defined by fiercely guarded local boundaries. For a firm operating within this highly lucrative industry and with ambitions of establishing a strong international presence for itself, a balance must be struck between riding on the game’s global appeal on the one hand and the need to somehow embed itself within particular local spaces on the other. This study aims to analyse how one such firm, the holding company City Football Group (CFG), is going about achieving this.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a conceptual paper that adopts a broadly inductive approach, building on an extensive analysis of both theoretical research and publicly available secondary data to develop a framework depicting three key strategies associated with CFG’s internationalisation.

Findings

Three factors are identified as being especially pertinent in CFG’s international expansion: the composition of CFG’s top management team; the attempts to establish a unifying “City identity”; and CFG’s forays into more peripheral leagues around the world after having established itself at the “top end” of the game.

Practical implications

The framework presented in this paper is particularly oriented towards a practitioner audience. Managers of firms operating in football, as well as in other industries in which the pressure to be both globally integrated and locally responsive is particularly acute, can draw lessons from both the framework and the broader insights presented here on CFG’s global expansion.

Social implications

Football is widely regarded as the world’s most popular sport, and fans often take matters very seriously when it comes to the club they support. How football clubs are run is, therefore, a matter of considerable societal interest, as demonstrated by various fan protests over the years. As global, multi-club ownership structures like that adopted by CFG become more commonplace, this study will provide football fans with some insight into the strategies of these companies and how their own clubs fit within these ownership models.

Originality/value

This study addresses an under-researched topic: the international expansion of a prominent football holding company.
