Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, two survey questionnaires have been prepared for the study based on literature review. Survey instruments were sent to American and Chinese business owners and managers who have a considerable amount of professional experience in the manufacturing area.
Findings
It is found that both American managers and Chinese business culture have influence on Chinese manufacturing quality.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to an understanding of the reasons behind the recent quality issues in Chinese manufacturing.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine the important product features that are to be included in smart grid devices. This will help the decision makers to prioritize the product feature implementations.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper provides a quantitative approach to determine the important product features. Data used in the model have been gathered by conducting a survey among 22 potential customers who have been living in residential areas.
Findings
Although customers understand that a feature to respond to price signals could benefit them, they overwhelmingly prefer cost benefit that an energy demand system would provide.
Originality/value
At a time when many are rushing in to implement technologies such as demand side management and any smart devices that go with them, this paper shows that customers may have different preferences than those implementing the technologies.

The purpose of this paper is to forecast the performance and adoption of residential energy management technology (REMT).
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to forecast the performance and adoption of residential energy management technology (REMT).
Design/methodology/approach
The paper integrates scenarios, analogy and Bass diffusion model.
Findings
Four different scenarios were identified. Bass curve parameters were extracted through many different existing devices, and then fit into each scenario subjectively to produce four different kinds of diffusion curves.
Originality/value
The approach and the model provide decision and policy makers to evaluate how they should position new energy management innovations based on the desired type of diffusion.

Abstract
Purpose
The electric utility industry, unlike most other technology‐intensive industries, does not spend much money or effort on research and development. Many utilities do not possess an in‐house R&D facility, nor is there an R&D line item in their budgets. Over the last several decades the rate of change in the electric utility industry has been very slow and in‐house R&D efforts have not been required. As the rate of change in the industry is beginning to change, the need to pursue R&D is increasing. The electric utility industry is responding to this increasing requirement by increasing R&D budgets, and in some cases re‐initiating the R&D process within individual utilities. The purpose of this paper is to focus on R&D portfolio management efforts of various actors from different industrial sectors, to find out the best practices by using benchmarking method.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper used case study approach and on‐site interviews as research methods.
Findings
The authors found that R&D management is in its infancy in the electric utility sector, while the methods established in the manufacturing sector are applicable there.
Originality/value
This study is exploring R&D management in the electric utility sector and contributes to the service innovation research stream.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of stressors (role ambiguity, role conflict, work‐overload, work‐family conflict), job stress, job satisfaction and organizational commitment on the information technology (IT) professionals' intention to quit their jobs in Turkey.
Design/methodology/approach
A structural equation modeling approach was employed to identify the variables that significantly affect the decision to quit. Using LISREL 8.54, data collected from 204 IT professionals were used to test the proposed research model.
Findings
The results revealed that intention to quit one's job is explained by job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Besides, role ambiguity and job stress exert negative indirect effects on the intention to quit one's job. Additionally, organizational commitment is strongly explained by job satisfaction, and job satisfaction is predicted by role ambiguity and job stress.
Practical implications
The study offers several significant suggestions for the continuity of IT professionals in companies.
Originality/value
There are two contributions of this paper. First, this study provides evidence for the impact of stressors, job stress, job satisfaction and organizational commitment on intention to quit jobs among IT professionals in Turkey. Second, it also provides insight into the importance of stress factors by dividing the stressors into specific stress factors such as work‐family conflict, work‐overload, role conflict, and role ambiguity.
