Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider extension of the Kőnig‐Egerváry theorem to apply to matrices of dimensionality greater the two. It is shown that the theorem holds for matrices of any dimensionality, in the standard case where “cover” of selected elements is by lines, and the criterion for independence is also with reference to lines. Attention is also given to the case where cover and (hyper‐independence) are with reference to planes, or submatrices of higher dimensionality, rather than lines, and counter‐examples are given that show the theorem does not then hold universally. A preliminary survey is made of the diverse proofs that have been devised for the basic theorem, and in an Appendix an approach to the multidimensional Transportation Problem is reviewed.

Design/methodology/approach

Interest in generalisation of the theorem arose from the attempt to extend the Hungarian Method for the Assignment Problem to higher dimensionality. The results are also interesting as purely mathematical theory.

Findings

The theorem has been shown to extend to the multidimensional case when cover and independence are defined with reference to lines, but not universally otherwise.

Practical implications

Extension of the theorem to higher dimensionality has not produced a rigorous corresponding extension of the Hungarian Method, but may stimulate further studies. An approximate extension of the method (approximate insofar as it gives no guarantee of convergence on an optimum) will be described in a later publication. The study of the multidimensional Transportation Problem, reviewed in the Appendix, confirms the general difficulty of extending a class of methods from elegant solutions in the two‐dimensional case to versions for higher dimensionality.

Originality/value

The paper's results are believed to be original. Their main value is likely to be in stimulating interest that may lead to further developments as suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study is about generating metadata to enhance thematic transparency and facilitate research on interview collections at the Research Documentation Centre, Centre for Social Sciences (TK KDK) in Budapest. It explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in producing, managing and processing social science data and its potential to generate useful metadata to describe the contents of such archives on a large scale.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors combined manual and automated/semi-automated methods of metadata development and curation. The authors developed a suitable domain-oriented taxonomy to classify a large text corpus of semi-structured interviews. To this end, the authors adapted the European Language Social Science Thesaurus (ELSST) to produce a concise, hierarchical structure of topics relevant in social sciences. The authors identified and tested the most promising natural language processing (NLP) tools supporting the Hungarian language. The results of manual and machine coding will be presented in a user interface.

Findings

The study describes how an international social scientific taxonomy can be adapted to a specific local setting and tailored to be used by automated NLP tools. The authors show the potential and limitations of existing and new NLP methods for thematic assignment. The current possibilities of multi-label classification in social scientific metadata assignment are discussed, i.e. the problem of automated selection of relevant labels from a large pool.

Originality/value

Interview materials have not yet been used for building manually annotated training datasets for automated indexing of scientifically relevant topics in a data repository. Comparing various automated-indexing methods, this study shows a possible implementation of a researcher tool supporting custom visualizations and the faceted search of interview collections.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to represent a novel framework for optimization of robotic handling from disarray to structure where the products are randomly distributed on a surface, the initial location of the products are known (with the aid of image processing, laser position sensors, etc.) and there is a set of final positions for the products.

Design/methodology/approach

Pick‐and‐place is one of the main solutions especially for the food products where the products are prone to damage, have adhesive surfaces and the grippers can be complicated. The aim of this paper is to maximize the utilization of the pick‐and‐place robotic system. In order to do so the handling process is modelled mathematically and the pick‐and‐place problem is formulated based on assignment problem where Hungarian algorithm is utilized to minimize the total distance travelled by the robot. Furthermore, a simulation program is developed to demonstrate the possible improvements of the algorithm in comparison with the existing algorithms.

Findings

Utilizing the proposed algorithm can significantly increase the utilization of robots in the pick‐and‐place operation.

Originality/value

The new optimization algorithm can be applied to any industry with pick‐and‐place where time efficiency and maximum utilization matters.

The change to a market economy in Eastern Europe has led to the need for management education. A British Diploma in Management Studies is being studied by students in Hungary. The Hungarian students are studying with distance learning materials produced by Buckinghamshire College of HE, and are supported by Hungarian tutors who conduct seminars in English. The students on the course tend to be better qualified academically than their UK counterparts. They are highly motivated and keen to study and obtain English qualifications. The students′ assignments are completed in English and the marks are moderated by staff at Buckinghamshire College. This method of developing management education could serve as a model for other East European countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to construct for the first time a link between the project members' assignment and personality balance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study develops a project assignment quantitative model that maximizes the team's personality balance while meeting the capability requirements.

Findings

The findings indicate that a more balanced project team that contributes to project performance can be obtained before project starts.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is limited to the exploration of Belbin's personality types. However, it offers a generic approach that can be applied to other personality categorization.

Practical implications

The paper helps practitioners form a personality balanced project team to improve the project performance by reducing the complexity of project communication and problem solving.

Originality/value

The paper develops for the first time a project assignment model that considers both capability and personality and allocates project personnel in such a way that the most suitable personnel is selected from a group of qualified capable candidates, to increase the possibility of success for the project.

Abstract

Purpose

Under the constraints of given passenger service level and coupling travel demand with train departure time, this study optimizes the train operational plan in an urban rail corridor to minimize the numbers of train trips and rolling stocks considering the time-varying demand of urban rail passenger flow.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors optimize the train operational plan in a special network layout, i.e. an urban rail corridor with dead-end terminal yard, by decomposing it into two sub-problems: train timetable optimization and rolling stock circulation optimization. As for train timetable optimization, the authors propose a schedule-based passenger flow assignment method, construct the corresponding timetabling optimization model and design the bi-directional coordinated sequential optimization algorithm. For the optimization of rolling stock circulation, the authors construct the corresponding optimization assignment model and adopt the Hungary algorithm for solving the model.

Findings

The case study shows that the train operational plan developed by the study's approach meets requirements on the passenger service quality and reduces the operational cost to the maximum by minimizing the numbers of train trips and rolling stocks.

Originality/value

The example verifies the efficiency of the model and algorithm.

Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Reflects on the past decade of change in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Notes the varying degrees of successful reform and aid/technical assistance for the region provided by international organizations. Examines efforts to provide technical assistance through the application of best practice to local governments. Develops a case study, using Hungary as a setting, of a local government deputy mayor and simulates a technical assistance best practice transfer. Describes also an alternative home‐grown best practice project at the local level. Lessons learned from these projects show that historical and contextual conditions have a very large impact on capacity building efforts in countries of transition; political values have to be developed and an organizational infrastructure to express them is essential. Ultimately, the knowledge and skills of senior managers must be cultivated, to assist them in nurturing the social capital needed for them to govern effectively.
