Abstract

Purpose

This article reflects on the development and impact of critical perspectives on international business (CPoIB) during its first decade of existence. The influence that the journal has had through its efforts to challenge orthodox understandings of international business (IB) is considered. The evolution of CPoIB is set against the changing global environment. The contributions to this 10th anniversary issue are outlined.

Design/methodology/approach

The journal's contents are reviewed and their impact assessed through an analysis of download and citation data. The position of the journal in various journal quality rankings is also examined. The contents of mainstream IB journals are compared to those of CPoIB.

Findings

During its short life, CPoIB has had an important impact on the field of IB both directly through the consideration of issues from a critical perspective in the pages of the journal and through its influence on the field of IB and critical management studies.

Research limitations/implications

The conclusions of the research are based on nine years of citation and download data as well as journal quality lists.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper provide valuable information for authors seeking a quality and impactful outlet for their research in the field of critical perspectives on IB and related disciplines. Academic and political activists in the field of IB will find theoretical backgrounds supporting their political campaigns.

Originality/value

This is the only paper to undertake an assessment of the first decade of CPoIB's development, content, and impact.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a selection of responses to the report Fashion Victims, published by War on Want in December 2006. It offers a range of viewpoints presented by members of the Editorial Advisory Board of CPOIB. These are presented in chronological order of submission. There is some cross‐reference by contributors to the work of others, but no attempt is made to present a unified argument.

Design/methodology/approach

Presents the full contributions of involved participants, without mediation or editorial change.

Findings

A number of different perspectives are presented on the central issue that is summarised by the opening heading in War on Want's report – “How cheap is too cheap?” It is seen that the answer to this question is very much dependent upon the standpoint of the respondent.

Originality/value

In presenting this form of commentary, members of the CPOIB Editorial Board seek to stimulate debate about an issue of concern to contemporary society, without resort to the time delay and mediating processes of peer‐review normally attached to academic writing. It is hoped that this discussion will provoke further contributions and a widening of the debate.

Abstract

This paper addresses the practice‐derived concept of “flexible working” in order to challenge the lack of critical thinking in such facilities management (FM) research and writing. Through comparison of the field of FM with literature from other management fields, it proposes that much FM “research” is concerned with the validation of practice‐based concepts, which have been derived and implemented in small sections of specific organisations with self‐interest in their success and promotion. In so doing, it supports previous critical reflection on the lack of theoretical research in the FM field.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks compare the current financial and economic problems with the problems facing the world economy in the 1930s.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper argues that the Great Depression and the current problems have similar causes – excessive speculation, leading to a financial collapse that then results in an economic collapse. It then looks at the work of John Maynard Keynes to help solve the current problems.

Findings

The paper advocates a large public works program plus a number of policies to help US homeowners and thereby stabilize housing prices.

Originality/value

The paper provides a way out of the current economic and financial problems, and a way to avoid another Great Depression.
