Abstract

Electronics manufacturing throughout the world now uses an increasing percentage of Surface Mount Technology (SMT). The compact and light‐weight surface‐mounted components offer a number of advantages to manufacturers. Unfortunately, however, these same beneficial characteristics make the quality of the product difficult to guarantee. As miniaturisation continues, the inspection problem becomes worse, and so advanced methods of inspection are required. Automatic inspection systems already exist, although an effective, inexpensive and reliable system has yet to be found. Recent work carried out within the Coherent and Electro‐Optics Research Group at Liverpool Polytechnic has looked at the feasibility of applying some of its established inspection methods to the problem of solder joint inspection. Extensive development must still take place; however, the methods employed have shown promise. The system uses structured light techniques to add height information to an image of the solder joint under inspection. In this way a 3‐D image of the joint may be built up, digitised and processed in a computer at high speed in order to determine its quality.

Some 230 delegates from the British Isles, the Commonwealth and Europe were welcomed to dinner on Friday evening by Sir Philip Morris, C.B.E., M.A., Vice‐Chancellor of the University, and Lady Morris. No papers were given on Friday evening, Mr. J. E. Wright arranging an informal dance after dinner.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study theoretically the ability of the prestressed foam core composite sandwich Split Cantilever Beam (SCB) for generating mixed-mode II/III crack loading conditions (the mode II fracture was provided by prestressing the beam using imposed transverse displacements).

Design/methodology/approach

The concepts of linear-elastic fracture mechanics were used. The fracture behavior was studied in terms of the strain energy release rate. For this purpose, a three-dimensional finite element model of the prestressed sandwich SCB was developed. The virtual crack closure technique was applied in order to analyze the strain energy release rate mode components distribution along the crack front.

Findings

It was found that the distribution is non-symmetric. The analysis revealed that a wide mixed-mode II/III ratios range can be generated by varying the magnitude of the imposed transverse displacement. The influence of the sandwich core material on the mixed-mode II/III fracture behavior was investigated. For this purpose, three sandwich beam configurations with different rigid cellular foam core were simulated. It was found that the strain energy release rate decreases when the foam core density increases.

Originality/value

For the first time, a mixed-mode II/III fracture study of foam core composite sandwich beam is performed.

Abstract

Purpose

Social media has increased as a marketing channel, and Facebook is the biggest social media company globally. Facebook contains both positive and negative information about companies; therefore, it is important for companies to manage their Facebook page to best serve their own interests. Although most users are familiar with business and marketing activities on Facebook, they use it primarily for fun and personal purposes. The most effective methods for companies to use Facebook have not been clear. The personal nature of Facebook presents unique challenges for companies by raising ethical and social responsibility issues that are important to users. The purpose of this paper is to discover how companies can optimize their use of Facebook as a marketing channel.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted. The respondents were 158 users of Facebook in Sweden; complete answers were provided by all respondents. In a series of specific questions and comments, the respondents were asked to describe an optimal marketing solution on Facebook for companies. They rated different functions, which were illustrated with pictures, to help in the cognitive process and to avoid misunderstandings.

Findings

Most users who have an opinion on the issue accept marketing on Facebook, but only in the right amount. There are basically two groups: those who think that companies have no place on Facebook and those who want companies to be active on Facebook. The latter group emphasizes the importance of meaningful posts without unsolicited sales messages, and would prefer to search for the companies themselves rather than being bombarded by company messages. By far, status updates and pictures/images were found to be the most important functions to respondents.

Research limitations/implications

The sample consisted of only Swedish users. Another limitation was that, since many Facebook users do not normally think about the implications of being exposed to marketing on Facebook, they have difficulty taking a position on many issues related to the service.

Practical implications

The results give companies a clear idea of how to effectively use Facebook in their marketing efforts.

Originality/value

A large number of companies are currently asking themselves, “How can we use Facebook in an optimal way?” The results in this study answer this question and lead directly to saving time and resources for these companies.
