Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to outline a vision for digital stories of development, or online personal learning environments, which may eventually replace what we currently call “electronic portfolios” in education.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a conceptual article that provides a lifelong, life‐wide perspective on electronic portfolios based on the authors' research, focusing on some of the issues that need to be addressed to make this vision a reality.

Findings

Based on the concept of “lifetime personal web space,” this online archive of a life's collection of reflections, memories, digital artefacts and memorabilia, both personal and professional, has the potential to change the current paradigm of electronic portfolios, mostly institution‐bound, and focus instead on the individual or the family as the center for creating a digital archive, which can be used in a variety of contexts across the lifespan, from schools to universities to the workplace. Finally, this archive can be used to develop personal histories and reflective narratives to preserve our stories for future generations. A possible scenario is followed by the challenges faced when developing this service for widespread dissemination. This is not a formal research paper with analysis, discussion or results. The paper is meant to provide a vision or future direction for electronic portfolios that could be stored in the internet “cloud” for a lifetime and beyond.

Practical implications

This paper encourages individuals as well as institutions to explore new ways to construct electronic portfolios in the Internet “cloud” so that the owner of the portfolio has access across their lifespan. This paper could also be used by Web 2.0 developers to improve the development of tools, making them more useable and accessible across the lifespan, from early readers to the elderly.

Originality/value

This paper provides a future vision of the potential for cloud computing to be used as a lifetime store of memories and digital memorabilia, as well as a broader vision of the electronic portfolio process across the lifespan.

Abstract

W. Edwards Deming was revered as a technical genius in the areas of mathematics, statistics, and statistical variation. Though largely known for his professional achievements, the core of Deming was his quality of character. He was raised by his parents under austere conditions in the heartland of the USA. The values ingrained in him by his parents included spiritual beliefs, a love of learning, devotion to family, commit‐ment to friends, and a strong work ethic. With an intense loyalty and love for his wife and children, he balanced his life so that family remained a priority. An accomplished writer of music, a grammarian, and a person with spiritual interests, Deming was much more than a public figure recognized as an icon of the “quality” movement.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a bibliometric study of journal articles related to institutional repositories in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) between January 1993 and August 2017. This study will provide researchers with a foundation for further research.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, articles published were analyzed; titles were searched using the term “institutional repositories.” The data were evaluated in response to four research questions on the following topics: publication trends, prolific authors, core journals and times cited.

Findings

The results indicate that 124 articles on institutional repositories were authored by 223 individuals. These articles were cited 722 times in 37 journals, and the h-index provided by the Web of Science was 14.

Research limitations/implications

This study only investigated articles titled with institutional repositories in the SSCI. Other items were not included.

Practical implications

This study shows that the implementation of institutional repositories has been limited to library and information science. If they can be used broadly in different disciplines, a better outcome can be expected.

Social implications

Based on the findings, the growth of institutional repositories as an academic subject is likely to continue. If such discussions can be conducted in other disciplines, institutional repositories may be able to provide a more promising outcome to academia.

Originality/value

This paper is valuable for researchers who wish to examine the trends of institutional repositories in the SSCI and seek possible areas for further research.

For selecting a hotel, he asks such questions as: How handy is it for airport transfers and road and rail arrivals? Is the car parking accommodation satisfactory? How many spaces are there? What public transport and taxi services are available? How many function rooms and sleeping rooms are there? How attractive is the price? What can be negotiated? Is it possible to benefit from seasonal and group rates? What other meetings are scheduled at the venue at the same time? (An overworked and exhausted staff is not desirable). Which hotel executive will be responsible for the event? Will he be easy to work with? Is the property handy for places which delegates or accompanying persons may want to visit — shops, entertainment, cultural attractions, restaurants, etc? Does it have a pool, gymnasium, sauna, nearby jogging, tennis, golf? Are the bar prices and hours acceptable? Will the hotel provide a special check‐in desk for your delegates, with quick service or pre‐booking? Will the meeting registration desk be well sited? What about in‐house restaurants, coffee shop, menus and prices? Does it cater for handicapped people? Are the halls and public rooms fresh and clean? Is the front office a cheerful place? Is the surrounding area safe at night? If the conference includes overseas delegates, do some staff speak their languages?

Abstract

Purpose

The paper sets out to provide a selected bibliography of books influential to the librarian's teaching and learning philosophy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper introduces and annotates books identified by LOEX‐of‐the‐West 2006 attendees as influential to their instruction activities, teaching philosophy, or meaning of education.

Findings

The paper provides information about each source, including an introductory discussion on the classification of the titles into six major genres of instruction inspiration and four major (generic) philosophies of education and learning.

Originality/value

The information presented in the paper may be used by librarians and interested parties to solidify and broaden their own thoughts and values on who they are as an instructor.
