Abstract

Purpose

Reports on papers presented at the 11th Ticer Summer School, 27‐31 August 2007 at the University of Tilbury, The Netherlands.

Design/methodology/approach

Reports from the viewpoint of a participant on the modular course; and gives insight into the themes covered.

Findings

Found the modular format worked well, especially the end of lecture question‐and‐answer sessions and the opportunity for discussion with the lecturers. Summarises the content of several of the lectures and finds them to be relevant and thought‐provoking on current library issues and themes in a digital age.

Originality/value

Of interest as a summary of the content of the Ticer Summer School and of current themes.

Abstract

Purpose

To share an important national meeting in Italy that provided an international overview of the Open Access movement to date and how progressive the European commitments have been in mandating OA publishing profiles, and more comprehensively how OA is being practiced in Italy.

Design/methodology/approach

A summary of the main points of the meeting.

Findings

This Congress included the major themes that brought together the research communities, the libraries and librarians, the scholarly publishing enterprises and highlighted the technologies in place to make OA a viable solution to the scholarly communication problems that currently exist.

Originality/value

By reviewing OA strategies and initiatives in place around the world at different institutions in different countries it is clear that there are ways to lay this groundwork so that long‐term success can be achieved. Lessons learned and best practices in place lead to more articulate and comprehensive ways to approach the ongoing problems to ensure that widespread adoption is close in Italy.

The purpose of this paper is to eview the papers presented at the international conference “Berlin5: from practice to impact. Consequences of knowledge dissemination”, 19‐21 September 2007, Padua, Italy.

Design/methodology/approach

Discusses the content of papers presented at the conference, all dedicated to aspects of Open Access. Findings The papers debate the challenges of Open Access and the possibilities of achieving a winning solution suitable for all stakeholders participating in the scholarly communication process.

A valuable review of the conference papers and current debate on Open Access.
