This paper aims to suggest feasible solutions to overcome the problem of unmanned aerial vehicles integration within the existing airspace.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to suggest feasible solutions to overcome the problem of unmanned aerial vehicles integration within the existing airspace.

Design/methodology/approach

It envisages innovative time-based separation procedures that will enhance the integration in the future air traffic management (ATM) system of next generation of large remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS). 4D navigation and dynamic mobile area concepts, both proposed in the framework of Single European Sky ATM Research program, are brought together to hypothesize innovative time-based separation procedures aiming at promoting integration of RPAS in the future ATM system.

Findings

Benefits of proposed procedures, mainly evaluated in terms of volume reduction of segregated airspace, are quantitatively analyzed on the basis of realistic operational scenarios focusing on monitoring activities in both nominal and emergency conditions. Eventually, the major limits of time-based separation for RPAS are investigated.

Practical implications

The implementation of the envisaged procedures will be a key enabler in RPAS integration in future ATM integration.

Originality/value

In the current ATM scenario, separation of RPAS from air traffic is ensured by segregating a large amount of airspace areas with fixed dimensions, dramatically limiting the activities of these vehicles.

Abstract

Purpose

There is controversy between Putnam and Olson concerning the role of groups. Putnam argued that small groups contribute to economic growth, whereas Olson asserted that small groups hamper economic growth through rent‐seeking behavior. Since the end of the 1990s in Japan, there has been a remarkable rise in the rate of enactment of public information‐disclosure ordinances by local governments. This paper aims to use the panel data of Japan to compare the effects of Putnam‐type horizontally structured groups and Olson‐type vertically structured groups on government information disclosures.

Design/methodology/approach

The Arellano‐Bond type dynamic panel model is employed to control for unobserved fixed effects and endogeneity bias.

Findings

The major findings are as follows: the Putnam‐type group has a positive influence on information disclosure; and the Olson‐type group has a detrimental effect on information disclosure.

Originality/value

These findings support both the Putnam and Olson hypotheses. The characteristics of a particular group should be considered carefully when the influence of that group is examined.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

The Eastern Mediterranean countries exhibit diversity in religion, culture, politics, and economy, amid rapid and dynamic regional developments shaped by global polarization and the international security landscape, rendering future prognostications challenging. This chapter delves into the realms of oil and natural gas production, the influx of multinational corporations, water boundaries, and renewable energy vis-à-vis fossil fuels in the Eastern Mediterranean, elucidating the realities of cooperation and competition within the region. Analysis of cooperation and competition dynamics is imperative for comprehending the tensions among states. Enhanced cooperation between states may lead to mutual benefits, such as increased oil and gas prices favoring their partnership, while any escalation in competition can swiftly be perceived as a threat, exacerbating tensions. The desirability of such cooperation or competition in the international political economy remains subject to ongoing debate.

Abstract

Summarizes the main objectives of the Australian Best Practice Demonstration Program and identifies a number of key human resource (HR) management issues. Argues that there has been a general shift in HR strategy away from the more adversarial, tightly controlled work regimes towards work structures which allow career development, skill enhancement and facilitate greater employee involvement. Examines some of these HR dimensions in an organizational setting – workplace restructuring at Mobil Adelaide Refinery. Presents a new approach to industrial relations which this company has developed: continual and open discussions between union delegates, employees and management to bring about new methods of work and pay agreements. Concludes with an overview of the process and outcomes of change and an appraisal of HR dimensions. Argues that it is only through consultative processes, which allow real gains for employees as well as management, that long‐term changes towards collaborative employee relations can be sustained.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in informal copycat-style firms. As a kind of informal economical organizations, copycat-style firms in many emerging economies play an important role in their development of the economics. The development of Shanzhai firms, Chinese-style copycat firms, from imitation to innovation has become an important micro-foundation of China’s economic growth and the manufacturing development. With the cluster development of the Chinese mobile phone industry as the macro and industrial environment background, this paper chose Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co. Ltd as the typical example of innovation in Shanzhai firms and studied the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in this company.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper chose Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co. Ltd as the typical example of innovation in Shanzhai firms and studied the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in this company by adopting the leading-edge dynamic capability theory, innovation theory and industrial cluster theory. The authors further discussed how to improve the dynamic capabilities in Shanzhai firms in China.

Findings

It is finally suggested that Shanzhai firms should reduce innovation failures and lower damage degree of dynamic capabilities through consistent innovation and paying attention to their innovation improvement.

Originality/value

It will be very significant to research the survival or diminishing of Shanzhai firms from a theoretical perspective, which will eventually enhance property right protection and innovation development in China.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the load carrying capacity of the journal bearings with steel shafts with varying surface texture in varying revolutions using experimental and neural network (NN) approach.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, we used a shaft with smooth surface with the same material properties compare their load carrying capacities of the shafts with three different pitches and two different profiles. The experimental data, such as pressure and oil temperature, are employed as training and testing data for NN. Quick Prop algorithm is used to update the weight of the network during the training.

Findings

The designated NN has superior performance for modelling of the system. Therefore, the proposed neural predictor would be used as a predictor for possible experimental applications on modelling bearing system.

Research limitations/implications

Mobil 0W‐40 lubricant was used and kept at temperature of 18°C. The surface of the shafts has been in two types: smooth, that is without and with profiles, that is trapezoidal and saw.

Practical implications

Owing to the parallel structure and fast learning of NN, this kind of algorithm will be utilized to model other types of bearing systems.

Originality/value

Instead of traditional methods, NN has fast learning and parallel processing structure. Moreover, NN can be used to process multiple‐input/multiple‐output data unlike other empirical modelling tools which can map one dependent variable at a time. Therefore, this method is able to predict the load carrying capacity with steel shafts with varying surface texture in varying revolutions satisfactorily where common techniques have failed.

Abstract

Aim of the present monograph is the economic analysis of the role of MNEs regarding globalisation and digital economy and in parallel there is a reference and examination of some legal aspects concerning MNEs, cyberspace and e‐commerce as the means of expression of the digital economy. The whole effort of the author is focused on the examination of various aspects of MNEs and their impact upon globalisation and vice versa and how and if we are moving towards a global digital economy.
