Abstract

Examines the tenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Discusses the 6th ITCRR, its breadth of textile and clothing research activity, plus the encouragement given to workers in this field and its related areas. States that, within the newer research areas under the microscope of the community involved, technical textiles focuses on new, ‘smart’ garments and the initiatives in this field in both the UK and the international community at large. Covers this subject at length.

Abstract

Claim The trailing edge of the main wing is composed of a flap 4 movable around an axis 3. A lever 5 is rigidly connected with the flap. A crosshead engaged in a slotted guide member 7. If this is moved in the direction of the arrow P from the cockpit, the position of the crosshead running in an inclined groove or a slot is altered. The result of this is that the lever 5 rotates around 3 and thus displaces the flap 4.

Abstract

Gear to change the blade angle of variable‐pitch air‐screws, while stopped or running, operated manually or by means of another source of power, consisting of a driving wheel, or driving gear, rigidly connected with the source of power and further of a wheel, fixed loosely to the shaft and revolving relatively in regard to it, with a transmission gear (rotating double wheel) or groups of transmission gears in order to turn the blades around their axis, characterized in that each rotating wheel 2, 3 of the transmission or the transmission group is formed as a single wheel 2′ with correspondingly wide toothing whereby one or both central wheels, in gear with that wheel, have a corrected toothing, thus differing only in the number of teeth, while their diameter is equal.

Abstract

A differential effect of the angular displacements of control surfaces is often required in the case of aileron controls, viz., a movement whereby for a given angle of rotation the upwardly‐moved aileron shows a range of deflexion which is different, measured from the common neutral position than that of the downwardly‐moved aileron. Fig. 4 shows the position of the device if the neutral position of the aileron is moved upwards. Fig. 5 shows the same operation, but with the neutral position displaced downwards.

Abstract

Stoneware is probably the oldest, or one of the oldest, engineering materials. Two thousand years ago the Romans were using it for water conduits, and the wonderfully preserved pipes that still exist from those days show how imperishable the material is. In this article Dr. Singer examines the reasons for the success of stoneware drainpipes and compares the material with others sometimes used for this purpose. He concludes that no other material yet approaches stoneware for reliability.

Abstract

EVERYBODY travelling in air or water by its own power applies the reaction or “repulse” principle, that is to say, it either takes up parts of masses contained within itself or, by means of suitable organs, gathers up parts of the surrounding fluid medium and accelerates these masses at a speed greater than its own travelling speed, and this generally in the direction opposite to that in which it desires to travel; whilst in certain cases, in addition to the force produced by the repulse, a further force is obtained through the forward suction of the fluid medium. Devices intended to utilize only the negative pressure produced by suction, e.g. through lateral ejection by means of radial surfaces running at very high (five‐figure) r.p.m. have not, in spite of repeated endeavours, proved successful.
