Abstract

This chapter examines the types of institutions successful at replicating the diversity of the full-time undergraduate population in the diversity of the STEM-discipline degrees awarded. The sample is limited to full-time undergraduate students enrolled at or who are graduates from nonprofit private and public institutions. Relative to their share of the full-time undergraduate population and U.S. population, Asians and whites are overrepresented and blacks and Hispanics were underrepresented in the STEM – discipline bachelor's degree population. Private doctorate and public bachelor's and public master's comprehensive degrees–granting institutions were more successful than their counterparts at replicating the diversity of the full-time undergraduate population in the diversity of the STEM-discipline degrees awarded. Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) were the most successful at replicating this diversity. These findings were consistent over the time period analyzed.

Abstract

Using the American and the French time-use surveys, we examine whether people have a preference for a more diversified mix of activities, in the sense that they experience greater well-being when their time schedule contains many different activities rather than is concentrated on a very small number. This could be due to decreasing marginal utility, as is assumed for goods consumption, if each episode of time is conceived as yielding a certain level of utility per se. With returns to specialization, people would then face a trade-off between efficiency and diversity in choosing how to allocate time. We examine these issues and investigate potential gender differences, considering both instantaneous feelings and life satisfaction.

Abstract

As the hospitality industry continues to grow globally, the development of highly skilled and educated human capital is a major industry challenge.

The WHO/World Bank states that 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability, yet this degree of diversity cannot be found within the management levels of the hospitality industry. In order to obtain this, diversity should also be found within the student cohorts of hospitality educational institutions.

This chapter seeks to examine how the hospitality educational sector policies and practices contribute towards the full inclusiveness of students with disabilities and by association towards the diversity found within the higher levels of management within the hospitality industry.

The findings suggest that implicitly students with disabilities are being discouraged from enrolling upon and successfully completing a degree in hospitality management, a growing necessity for a management career within the hospitality industry. Therefore, a shift of perspective is required to see disability not as a personal health condition of individuals. However, the hospitality educational sector should seek to embrace more innovation, with the adoption of technology that seeks to create access and meaningful encounters with student from all sectors of the society; in addition, the sector can help overcome the often negative societal attitudes and perceptions displayed towards people with disabilities. This can be achieved by integrating positive images of students with disabilities and clear and transparent policy statements in public facing material, which is often used as marketing and promotional material for institutions. In this way, the hospitality educational sector would be seen to be taking positive steps in preparing talent drawn from all section of society and can be regarded as an active agent in the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 with a goal of full inclusiveness within the hospitality higher educational sector.

Abstract

We can divide the humanity into 5,000 ethnic groups who reside in 160 distinct states in the world. On an average this implies that only one randomly picked state out of every 10 states is ethnically homogenous. In other words the borders between different ethnic groups do not accord with national borders. We, hence, live in a melting pot of ethnicity and most countries are ethnically heterogeneous. In an alternative fashion, we can make a statement about our ethnic diversity by making a simple observation that there are over 600 living language groups in 184 states in the world. There is thus a reason to believe that the human race confronts a serious and endemic ethnic diversity, which is also increasingly accompanied with unprecedented ethnic rivalry, competition, conflicts, violent clashes and all-out wars. Our chapter provides a comprehensive investigation into the economic causes and consequences of ethnic heterogeneity in our modern world. In order to understand the basic economics of ethnic diversity, we will focus our attention to what is commonly known as ‘global firms’ who employ people from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The consequences will be examined in the context of modern societies where the global firms play an important economic role.
