Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine why an attempt at suicide does not always indicate the beginning of a life with poor mental health.

Design/methodology/approach

Case studies, supplemented by follow-up studies of attempted suicides.

Findings

One of the strongest predictors of a healthy life after the suicide attempt was found to be improvement in the appropriateness of behavior toward others and improved adult functioning.

Originality/value

The results suggest that behavioral coaching, in addition to traditional psychiatric treatment, could help attempted suicides move on with their lives productively.

Abstract

Background: Educational institutions are strategic tools in disseminating knowledge on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since education is an effective developmental tool. All the 17 SDGs are tied in one way or the other to education, that is, the ability of people to learn and apply. This study applies unorthodox theories which include convergence models, neo-functionalism, intergovernmentalism, neorealism and the Hofstede model to explain how educational institutions are an essential enabling environment which accelerates the attainment of SDGs.

Methods: These factors are analysed in the context of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Empirically, some university case studies were highlighted in addition to unclear modus operandi, small, fragmented and heterogeneous markets and economies, political stability, deficient political will, and lack of standardisation of products and procedures among other factors. These dynamics affect both the quality of educational institutions and the quality of education thereby directly or indirectly affecting the attainment of the 17 SDGs and are compounded with the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic.

Results: The study reveals that acceleration of the 17 SDGs will require a holistic approach as opposed to silos (scientific, economic, political, academic) which usually emerge when pursuing overarching goals of this magnitude.

Conclusions: It concludes that accelerating progress towards the attainment of SDGs will not only require dynamic and visionary leadership but also well-functioning institutions which are based on economic feasibility as opposed to political alliances. Priorities should be placed on addressing poverty, inequality and quality education. Moreover, partnerships will be key in achieving sustainability especially given that the COVID-19 pandemic has compounded existing challenges.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to examine the factors that influence how managers approach data analytics.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors draw on content analysis of 34 in-depth interviews with managers in various sectors in France.

Findings

Using Resource Orchestration Theory as the theoretical lens, the findings show that an understanding of the importance of data analytics, having the skills to effectively use data analytics and the capability to integrate data analytics throughout organizations impact the approach adopted by managers. Based on these interrelated factors, a typology of four different approaches is identified: buyer-users, segmenters, promoters and implementers.

Research limitations/implications

The authors' study reflects results from multiple industries instead of one particular sector. Delving deeper into the practices of distinct sectors with respect to the authors' typology would be of interest.

Practical implications

The study points to the role of managers and more specifically managers' perception of the opportunities and challenges related to data analytics. These perceptions emerge in managers' skills and capacity to understand and integrate dimensions of data analytics that go beyond one's areas of expertise in order to create capabilities towards an organization's advantage.

Originality/value

The authors contribute by revealing three interrelated factors influencing how managers approach data analytics in managers' organizations. The authors address the need expressed by practitioners to better identify factors responsible for adoption and effective use of data analytics.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the strategies that service providers use to facilitate marketplace accessibility, and identify the key challenges in that process. The authors do so to develop a roadmap towards improved accessibility and disability inclusion in the marketplace.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted eight semi-structured interviews with service providers (curators, visitor service coordinators and access managers) at museums who run access programmes for customers with visual impairment (VI), along with an embodied duo-ethnography of those programmes.

Findings

Service providers foster autonomous, embodied and social access. Resource constraints, safety concerns and exposed differences between customers compromise access. To overcome these challenges, service providers engage in three inclusionary strategies – informing, extending and sensitizing.

Research limitations/implications

This service provider- and VI-focus present limitations. Future research should consider a poly-vocal approach that includes the experiences of numerous stakeholders to holistically advance marketplace accessibility; and apply the marketplace accessibility findings upon different disabilities in other marketplace contexts.

Practical implications

This study offers a roadmap for policymakers and service providers on: which types of access should and can be created; what challenges may be encountered; how to manage these challenges; and, thus, how to advance accessibility beyond regulations.

Originality/value

This study contributes a service provider perspective on marketplace accessibility that goes beyond removing “disabling” barriers towards creating opportunities for co-creation; an approach towards marketplace accessibility that fosters inclusiveness while considering the inherent challenges of that process; and an illustration of posthumanism’s empirical value in addressing issues of accessibility in the marketplace.

Abstract

Purpose

The past is important for various known and unknown reasons. This paper aims to reveal and justify unacknowledged reasons why, when and how managers should consider leveraging the pasts of previously successful but currently declining brands to restore their more desirable historical market positions.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual paper combines marketing and branding theory with historical branding examples, anecdotes and inductive inferences to develop and justify brand-pastness as a theoretically-grounded and managerially-actionable repositioning concept that could be applied to resurrect declining brands.

Findings

The emergent historically-grounded brand-pastness framework generates innovative insights that could be applied in the future. These insights explain when, why and how brand managers could apply brand-pastness to resurrect declining brands. The framework also facilitates the development of a brand-pastness-based research agenda. The agenda is driven by questions structured to address the nature, scope and potential applications of brand-pastness as a new concept and useful repositioning tool.

Research limitations/implications

This paper’s recommendations are limited by their conceptual and inductive origins. However, a research agenda is developed to guide and structure future empirical investigations of the branding antecedents to and consequences of a prospective brand-pastness construct.

Originality/value

This paper introduces, conceptualizes and justifies the potential value of a historically-grounded concept called brand-pastness. The concept may prove beneficial when marketing managers use brand-pastness to reposition and resurrect declining brands by re-instilling targeted consumers’ historical perceptions of brands’ past superiority.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impacts of adopting big data analytics (BDA) on firm sustainability performance (FSP) mediated through firm financial performance (FIP) and operational performance (OPP).

Design/methodology/approach

A theoretical model is based on ideas from existing literature on BDA, sustainability, FIP, dynamic capability view theory and resource capability view theory. The model is then validated using the partial least squares–structural equation modeling technique with consideration of 312 responses from 24 Indian firms.

Findings

The study provides three important findings. First, there is a significant and positive impact of BDA on firms’ financial and OPP. Second, BDA significantly and positively impacts firm business process performance (BPP) and dynamic capabilities (DYC), which, in turn, significantly impacts the firm’s financial and OPP. Finally, both the financial and OPP of the firm significantly and positively impact sustainability performance.

Research limitations/implications

This theoretical model is unique in showing the impacts of BDA on BPP, firm DYC, financial and OPP. The study also shows how BDA can enhance FSP by mediating through financial as well as the OPP of the firms. The study uses data only from India and thus the proposed model cannot be generalizable.

Originality/value

This study provides valuable input to researchers, academicians and industry practitioners on the importance of BDA for FSP. The study also adds value to the body of knowledge on sustainability, FIP and technology adoption. The proposed unique theoretical model has an explanative power of 70%, which is quite high and can be used across different industries.

Abstract

Purpose

Increased fraudulent practices have heightened the need for innovation in anti-fraud programs, necessitating the development of analytics techniques for detecting and preventing fraud. The subject of fraud analytics will continue to expand in the future for public-sector organizations; therefore, this research examined the progress of fraud analytics in public-sector transactions and offers suggestions for its future development.

Design/methodology/approach

This study systematically reviewed research on fraud analytics development in public-sector transactions. The review was conducted from June 2021 to June 2023 by identifying research objectives and questions, performing literature quality assessment and extraction, data synthesis and research reporting. The research mainly identified 43 relevant articles that were used as references.

Findings

This research examined fraud analytics development related to public-sector financial transactions. The results revealed that fraud analytics expansion has not spread equally, as most programs have been implemented by governments and healthcare organizations in developed countries. This research also exposed that the analytics optimization in fraud prevention is higher than for fraud detection. Such analytics help organizations detect fraud, improve business effectiveness and efficiency, and refine administrative systems and work standards.

Research limitations/implications

This research offers comprehensive insights for researchers and public-sector professionals regarding current fraud analytics development in public-sector financial transactions and future trends.

Originality/value

This study presents the first systematic literature review to investigate the development of fraud analytics in public-sector transactions. The findings can aid scholars' and practitioners' future fraud analytics development.
