Abstract

Purpose

Spinning slender bodies are affected by lateral Magnus forces and moments when exposed to cross-flow. The effects occurring for spinning bodies of revolution in combination with stabilising or control surfaces such as canards are not yet fully explained. Therefore the present work aims to investigate the phenomena arising from the interactions of a roll-decoupled guidance unit with a spinning rear body are investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

A generic tangential-ogive-cylinder projectile equipped with deflectable canards on a roll-decoupled nose is investigated by means of 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations at Mach number 2 for angles of attack up to 22 degrees. Different canard deflection angles up to 9 degrees are considered. Global aerodynamic coefficients as well as local flow fields are analysed to explain the interactions occurring between the roll-decoupled guidance unit and the spinning rear body.

Findings

The deflected canards lead to flow interactions resulting in lateral forces and moments even without a spinning motion of the rear part. Depending on the canard deflection angles, these forces act in or against the direction of the classical Magnus effect. For angles of attack smaller than 10 degrees it is possible for the current body geometry to directly superpose the lateral effects resulting from the fins for the non-spinning model with those occurring for the non-finned but spinning model to obtain the total forces and moments acting on a spinning model with canted canards. However, the lateral effects generated on the guidance unit itself are insignificant compared to the canard-induced effects on the rear body.

Originality/value

A detailed analysis of the interaction effects arising from a decoupled guidance unit containing canards with a non-spinning/spinning rear body is performed and the underlying phenomena are revealed.

Abstract

Purpose

The present work aims to investigate the capabilities of accurately predicting the six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) trajectory and the flight behavior of a flare-stabilized projectile using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and rigid body dynamics (RBD) methods.

Design/methodology/approach

Two different approaches are compared for calculating the trajectory. First, the complete matrix of static and dynamic aerodynamic coefficients for the projectile is determined using static and dynamic CFD methods. This discrete database and the data extracted from free-flight experiments are used to simulate flight trajectories with an in-house developed 6DoF solver. Second, the trajectories are simulated solving the 6DoF motion equations directly coupled with time resolved CFD methods.

Findings

Virtual fly-out simulations using RBD/CFD coupled simulation methods well reproduce the motion behavior shown by the experimental free-flight data. However, using the discrete database of aerodynamic coefficients derived from CFD simulations shows a slightly different flight behavior.

Originality/value

A discrepancy between CFD 6DoF/RBD simulations and results obtained by the MATLAB 6DoF-solver based on discrete CFD data matrices is shown. It is assumed that not all dynamic effects on the aerodynamics of the projectile are captured by the determination of the force and moment coefficients with CFD simulations based on the classical aerodynamic coefficient decomposition.

Purpose

This paper explores how the existence of a second-hand market can affect remanufacturing decisions for durable goods in the presence of patent protection.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors construct a dynamic decision model between a durable goods original manufacturer and a durable goods remanufacturer considering the characteristics of the multi-cycle uses of new durable goods and remanufactured durable goods.

Findings

The results show that (1) the second-hand market compresses the cost space of a durable goods original manufacturer and a remanufacturer; (2) when the second-hand market exists, the optimal pricing of new durable goods is reduced, the optimal pricing of remanufactured durable goods is increased and the patent cost of each unit of durable goods increases and (3) the presence of the second-hand market will increase the original manufacturer's and remanufacturer's profits.

Originality/value

The research conclusion has certain reference value for the production strategy selection of each enterprise in the process of patented product remanufacturing and the government's fiscal policy formulation at each stage of the remanufacturing industry's development.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the effects of mindfulness training (MT) on employee well-being. Mindfulness is the awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, sensations, actions and surroundings in the present moment.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used pre-post training measures and a four-week follow-up on a sample of 23 employees from a UK-based organization. The MT group (n=12) received a weekly two-hour training over eight weeks whilst the control group (n=11) received no training. Qualitative interviews (n=36) were conducted with the MT group at three time points to further assess the subjective experiences of training participants.

Findings

Compared to the control group, the MT group significantly increased their mindfulness skills including observing and acting with awareness. Scores on well-being, i.e. satisfaction with life, hope and anxiety also improved and were generally maintained at follow-up. Some improvements were seen in the control group too but there was a larger difference in change scores in the MT group on most variables. Qualitative data show additional benefits of MT such as improved concentration at work and better interpersonal relationships. More practice at home led to greater benefits suggesting a dose-response relationship between the amount of practice and substantial benefits.

Research limitations/implications

Inviting participants to have a greater amount of practice between sessions may further increase the benefits of mindfulness. Future research should consider a longer follow-up period to further explore the sustainability of the training benefits.

Originality/value

Employing a mixed-method approach, this study showed that MT is a viable psychological intervention for enhancing employee well-being.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to explore the relationships among self‐directed learning and entrepreneurial learning; and the relationships among entrepreneurial learning and entrepreneurial performance through a literature review. This paper reviews the characteristics of self‐directed learning that are important in supporting entrepreneurial learning. A conceptual framework outlining the relationships among self‐directed learning and entrepreneurial learning is provided to illustrate how these relationships can enhance entrepreneurial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Key words are identified to use in the literature search. All of the several electronic databases available in the online library, including both journal and book sources, are used to search for resources, as well as Google Scholar and Google Search.

Findings

Entrepreneurs who learn and develop their self‐management and self‐monitoring skills have more opportunities to enhance entrepreneurial knowledge and experiences in the entrepreneurial development process. The research generates valuable outcomes and findings for future business and entrepreneurship study: self‐directed learning has emerged as an important area of inquiry in relation to entrepreneurial learning, as well as entrepreneurial performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study was exploratory, based on the literature review. Further studies are needed using empirical research to examine why some characteristics of self‐directed learning and entrepreneurial learning are better used to enhance the outcomes of entrepreneurial performance.

Originality/value

The research constructs a conceptual framework to outline the relationships among self‐directed learning, entrepreneurial learning, and entrepreneurial performance. Value was created when self‐directed learning and entrepreneurial learning are identified as the key factors for the entrepreneurial performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the possibilities in using such national, statutory data sets for evaluating change and the challenges of understanding service patterns and outcomes in complex cases when only a limited view can be gained using existing data. The discussion also explores how methodologies can adapt to an evaluation in these circumstances.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper examines the use of data routinely collected by local authorities (LAs) as part of the evaluation of innovation. Issues entailed are discussed and illustrated through two case studies of evaluations conducted by the research team within the context of children’s social care in England.

Findings

The quantitative analysis of LA data can play an important role in evaluating innovation but researchers will need to address challenges related to: selection of a suitable methodology; identifying appropriate comparator data; accessing data and assessing its quality; and sustaining and increasing the value of analytic work beyond the end of the research. Examples are provided of how the two case studies experienced and addressed these challenges.

Research limitations/implications

• Quasi-experimental methods can be beneficial tools for understanding the impact of innovation in children’s services, but researchers should also consider the complexity of children’s social care and the use of mixed and appropriate methods. • Those funding innovative practice should consider the additional burden on those working with data and the related data infrastructure if wishing to document and analyse innovation in a robust way. • Data, which may be assumed to be uniform may in fact not be when considered at a multi-area or national level, and further study of the data recording practice of social care professionals is required.

Originality/value

The paper discusses some common issues experienced in quasi-experimental approaches to the quantitative evaluation of children’s services, which have, until recently, been rarely used in the sector. There are important considerations, which are of relevance to researchers, service leads in children’s social care, data and performance leads and funders of innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

Today, contactless businesses are becoming part of the “new normal” in daily life. Augmented reality-based services (ARBS) thus provide a mechanism for contactless commerce, offering customers access to sensory experiences, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, privacy can be a key concern when consumers decide whether to continue using ARBS. Thus, drawing on the Appraisal Tendency Framework (ATF), the study aims to examine how augmentation quality (Aug-Q), discrete emotions (joy and frustration) and privacy perceptions influence users' ARBS continuing use intention.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey methodology with a well-designed online questionnaire was used for data collection. The data were analyzed using a structural equation model with Amos v. 22.0 software.

Findings

This study demonstrated that Aug-Q had a significant positive impact on joy and a significant negative impact on frustration. Additionally, joy was positively associated with the perception of privacy benefits and ARBS continuing use intention, while frustration was negatively associated with the perception of privacy benefits and ARBS continuing use intention. The results also indicate that (perceived privacy risks) PPR–benefits predict the likelihood of ARBS continuing use intention.

Originality/value

This study enhances understanding of users' ARBS continuing use intention from an integrative perspective based on the ATF, thus identifying the Aug-Q-induced emotions that subsequently influence privacy trade-offs and predict users' ARBS continuing use intention. The results provide evidence that privacy and emotions can be key determinants when consumers decide whether to continue using ARBS. The findings of this research may be beneficial for commercial companies in preventing the loss of ARBS users.
