Abstract

Purpose

The paper seeks to identify the sources of confusion in the Chinese personal computer market and the confusion reduction strategies used.

Design/methodology/approach

A self‐completion questionnaire with a sample of 140 respondents was used.

Findings

Technological complexity is the major source of confusion. Word of mouth is the most common source of information used to reduce confusion due to its credibility and reliability.

Practical implications

Technical confusion leads to similarity confusion and overchoice confusion. Manufacturers and retailers need to address technical confusion to reduce the overall level of confusion in the PC market.

Originality/value

The paper examines confusion in an Eastern culture, whereas previously it has been predominantly investigated in Western cultures.

Abstract

Purpose

To identify the dexterity of spacesuit gloves, they need to undergo bending tests in the development process. The ideal way is to place a humanoid robotic hand into the spacesuit glove, mimicking the motions of a human hand and measuring the bending angle/force of the spacesuit glove. However, traditional robotic hands are too large to enter the narrow inner space of the spacesuit glove and perform measurements. This paper aims to design a humanoid robot hand that can wear spacesuit gloves and perform measurements.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed humanoid robotic hand is composed of five modular fingers and a parallel wrist driven by electrical linear motors. The fingers and wrist can be delivered into the spacesuit glove separately and then assembled inside. A mathematical model of the robotic hand is formulated by using the geometric constraints and principle of virtual work to analyze the kinematics and statics of the robotic hand. This model allows for estimating the bending angle and output force/torque of the robotic hand through the displacement and force of the linear motors.

Findings

A prototype of the robotic hand, as well as its testing benches, was constructed to validate the presented methods. The experimental results show that the whole robotic hand can be transported to and assembled in a spacesuit glove to measure the motion characteristics of the glove.

Originality/value

The proposed humanoid robotic hand provides a new method for wearing and measuring the spacesuit glove. It can also be used to other gloves for special protective suits that have highly restricted internal space.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an identification method based on monocular vision for cylindrical parts in cluttered scene, which solves the issue that iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm fails to obtain global optimal solution, as the deviation from scene point cloud to target CAD model is huge in nature.

Design/methodology/approach

The images of the parts are captured at three locations by a camera amounted on a robotic end effector to reconstruct initial scene point cloud. Color signatures of histogram of orientations (C-SHOT) local feature descriptors are extracted from the model and scene point cloud. Random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm is used to perform the first initial matching of point sets. Then, the second initial matching is conducted by proposed remote closest point (RCP) algorithm to make the model get close to the scene point cloud. Levenberg Marquardt (LM)-ICP is used to complete fine registration to obtain accurate pose estimation.

Findings

The experimental results in bolt-cluttered scene demonstrate that the accuracy of pose estimation obtained by the proposed method is higher than that obtained by two other methods. The position error is less than 0.92 mm and the orientation error is less than 0.86°. The average recognition rate is 96.67 per cent and the identification time of the single bolt does not exceed 3.5 s.

Practical implications

The presented approach can be applied or integrated into automatic sorting production lines in the factories.

Originality/value

The proposed method improves the efficiency and accuracy of the identification and classification of cylindrical parts using a robotic arm.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between an ownership structure with multiple large shareholders and corporate social responsibility (CSR) with regard to Chinese-listed companies.

Design/methodology/approach

Multiple regression analysis was used on 4,940 samples of 884 listed companies in China for the period 2009–2017, to empirically test the influence of an ownership structure on enterprises’ fulfillment of social responsibility. Moreover, the propensity score matching–difference in differences and Heckman two-stage approaches were used for the robustness of the regression results.

Findings

The results show that ownership structures with multiple large shareholders can promote social responsibility. The check-and-balance ability of non-controlling large shareholders, corporate information transparency and corporate system environment moderate the relationship between multiple large shareholders and CSR engagement.

Originality/value

This paper complements prior studies on the ownership structure of multiple large shareholders. The findings enrich the literature on corporate governance and CSR. The results also reveal information about the situational factors, helping identify the mechanism through which the ownership structure of multiple large shareholders affects CSR.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of green bonds on common prosperity in China. Green bonds have gained significant attention as a means to address financial challenges and promote environmental protection. This research aims to investigate the influence of green bonds on common prosperity by utilizing the system-generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) and analyzing panel data from prefecture-level cities. The study also explores the theoretical mechanisms and heterogeneous relationships between green bonds and common prosperity, providing valuable guidance for advancing economic and social well-being in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a system-generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) as the methodology to investigate the influence of green bonds on common prosperity in China. Panel data from prefecture-level cities for the period 2014 to 2020 are utilized for analysis. The SYS-GMM approach allows for the examination of dynamic relationships and control of endogeneity issues. By utilizing this methodology, the study aims to provide robust and reliable findings on the impact of green bonds on common prosperity, considering the specific context of China's ecological civilization development and financial challenges faced by energy-saving and environmental protection enterprises.

Findings

The findings of this research indicate several important outcomes. Firstly, common prosperity in China experienced substantial growth between 2014 and 2020. Secondly, green bonds have demonstrated a clear and positive impact on common prosperity. They contribute to the enhancement of common prosperity by driving industrial structure upgrading and fostering green technology innovation. Lastly, the study reveals that the positive influence of green bonds on common prosperity is particularly pronounced in the western region of China. These findings highlight the significance of green bonds in promoting sustainable economic development and societal well-being.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the impact of green bonds on common prosperity in China, utilizing the system-generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) and panel data analysis. The research not only adds to the understanding of the relationship between green bonds and economic well-being but also provides insights into the theoretical mechanisms and heterogeneous relationships involved. The findings showcase the positive influence of green bonds on common prosperity, emphasizing their role in addressing financial challenges, promoting environmental protection, and driving sustainable development. The study's conclusions offer valuable guidance for policymakers, financial institutions, and stakeholders in advancing common prosperity in China.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the coupled effects of surface roughness and flow rheology for a homogeneous mixture of Newtonian base oil and power law fluids on the performance of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) circular contact problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The average flow model is adapted for the interaction of the flow rheology of lubricant and surface roughness. The average Reynolds type equation (ARTE) and the related flow factors (which describes the coupled effects of surface roughness and flow rheology of a mixture), the viscosity‐pressure and density‐pressure relations equations, the elastic deformation equation, and the force balance equation are then solved simultaneously. The multilevel multi‐integration algorithm and Gauss‐Seidel iteration method are utilized to calculate the film thickness and pressure distributions of the EHL circular contact problems effectively.

Findings

The effects of volume fraction, flow index of power law fluid, and surface roughness parameters (Peklenik number, standard deviation of composite surface roughness) on the film thickness and pressure distributions are discussed. The results show that the effects of surface roughness should be considered especially in EHL contact problems.

Originality/value

The EHL of circular contacts lubricating with mixture of two lubricants is first analyzed. The coupling effects of surface roughness and flow rheology of mixture (a Newtonian fluid and a power‐law fluid) on the EHL performance are first discussed in this paper.

Examines the tenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate and examine the effects of ultimate ownership, institutionality and their interactions on capital structure in a unified framework, based on evidence from China.

Design/methodology/approach

Using six years of panel data of Chinese non-financial listed firms between 2004 and 2009, this paper estimates with correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis.

Findings

This paper finds that debt financing facilitates the ultimate owner's expropriation behavior. The separation of control rights and cash flow rights is positively related to capital structure, while cash flow rights negatively affect it. Compared with private ultimate owners, state ultimate owners have less incentive to reap the benefits of expropriation, implying that the separation of control rights and cash flow rights has a smaller effect on the capital structure of state-owned firms. The improvement of institutionality can restrain ultimate owners' expropriation behavior, and regional institutional development is negatively related to capital structure. The separation of control rights and cash flow rights has a smaller positive effect on capital structure in regions with better-developed institutionality.

Originality/value

This paper incorporates ultimate ownership and institutionality into a unified analytical framework of capital structure. It not only enriches related studies on capital structure, but also helps us understand the institutional roots of irrational capital structure behaviors in China. This paper also provides further evidence on ultimate owners' expropriation of minority shareholders through debt financing.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore how a shared service centre (SSC) is mobilised in a power-dominant context of a Chinese state-owned enterprise (SOE). Specifically, it examines the mobilisation of SSC within this multi-divisional SOE, the role and dynamics of actors involved and the influence of changes in the integrated information system (IIS) during the mobilisation process.

Design/methodology/approach

The study follows a qualitative case study methodology. The authors draw on actor-network theory to examine the network and translation processes constructed in mobilising SSC in the chosen SOE. The data sources of this study were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations and documentary reviews.

Findings

The mobilisation of SSC is not a linear process but rather a “spiral” interplay through continuous interactions and compromises between human and non-human actors. Power gave the core actor as an orchestrator legitimacy and formality to reduce resistance and obstruction in translation for the mobilisation of SSC. The changes in IIS appear to facilitate the interaction between the heterogeneous actors.

Practical implications

This case study contributes towards understanding the mobilisation of SSC in a power-dominant context by highlighting the impact of changes in IIS and the details of the mobilisation of SSC in terms of the role played by both the individual actors and the technology.

Originality/value

This study provides a broader understanding of the interactions of the heterogeneous actors for mobilising SSC in a power-dominant context. More importantly, the study inspires future research into examining how SSC practices unfold and how the changes in IIS influence the mobilisation of SSC.
