Abstract

A major drawback of current copper thick‐film technology is the inefficient removal of the organic binder associated with the dielectric material in the low‐oxygen inert gas (N2) atmosphere of the furnace. In processing large area and/or multilayer substrates, the incomplete binder removal causes deleterious effects which have been well documented. Therefore, it is necessary to remove hydrocarbons and residual carbon from the films in the burn‐out section of the furnace before the films begin developing their characteristic microstructures. However, the atmosphere currently employed is not capable of removing all the carbon and hydrogen in the form of gaseous oxides. In literature, in addition to furnace modifications, several atmosphere modifications and manipulations have been proposed to achieve optimum properties for the fired films. With few exceptions, the scientific basis for such atmosphere modifications and manipulations has been left either unaddressed or obscure. With this background, this paper examines the feasibility of using a reactive gas mixture in the furnace to achieve efficient organic binder removal. Phase stability diagrams are presented to illustrate the stability of (i) carbon, (ii) thick film copper ingredients, (iii) active phases of resistors, and (iv) components of glassy and crystalline phases of dielectrics in selected reactive atmospheres. The stability of certain furnace belt constituents is also addressed. Mass balance calculations are shown to demonstrate the extent of carbon removal and copper oxidation in typical nitrogen atmospheres. Based on the interpretation of thermodynamic data and reaction mechanisms involved, a specific H2‐H2O mixture with nitrogen as the carrier gas is recommended. The approach presented here constitutes a general analytical scheme to understand materials‐atmosphere interactions occurring across a temperature range. Several issues in furnace design are also discussed from the standpoint of gas‐solid reaction kinetics. These deal with the design of gas‐flow systems that facilitate removal of organic binders.

Abstract

Knowledge of critical materials and process parameters necessary to fabricate quality copper thick film multilayer and hybrid circuits is being amassed and distributed throughout the industry via technical reports and presentations. Generally the information being provided in a single report deals with specific segments of the industry or only one or two specific nitrogen fireable materials. In order for hybrid manufacturers to commit themselves to the technology they need to know that sufficient flexibility exists to permit design of complex circuits and accommodate circuit design changes without imposing changes in basic process guidelines and controls. The OEM's concern, which is valid, has been that the investment required for capital equipment and establishing new processes must be fully supported by and provide reasonable return from the technology being initiated. This paper introduces new information on wire bonding in copper thick film circuits and some improvements in nitrogen fireable resistor characteristics and processing. Materials are available to produce a broad range of circuits without varying basic process parameters, and adding wirebonding as an interconnect capability further expands the circuit complexity and density achievable with copper thick films.

Abstract

This paper reports the results of development work conducted on nitrogen‐based atmospheres in order to improve the firing of copper thick film systems through continuous furnaces. The proposed solution is particularly suitable for industrial production conditions since it allows variations of the material quantity processed per unit time, resulting not only in an improvement in quality but also in productivity. Such improvements have been achieved by using a new gas distribution system which provides both zone control and regulation of oxygen additions in the nitrogen furnace atmosphere. An efficient set‐up of this system has become possible thanks to precise control of the oxygen profile in relation to the temperature cycle, taking into account various inks' characterisation, and owing to an extensive study of the effects of oxygen additions on copper thick film properties. The solution was tested in a muffle‐lined belt furnace with several commercial dielectric and copper inks, and for increasing oxygen additions into the furnace preheat zone. Different sample patterns were designed to test both monolayer and multilayer systems. The test programme includes measurements of resistivity, bondability, solderability, dielectric breakdown voltage and adhesion of copper films on alumina and on dielectric layers before and after ageing. Ink characterisation by thermogravimetry and by several gas analyses has confirmed that the organic vehicle removal mechanism under nitrogen atmospheres doped with oxygen is a burnout. Indeed, significant oxygen consumption occurs within the temperature range of the removal, as a function of the amount of ink processed. Oxygen additions in the furnace burnout zone greatly improve both the dielectric breakdown voltage and the adhesion of copper on alumina and on dielectric (especially after ageing), while sheet resistivity, wire bondability and soft solderability are not altered below a defined O2 level. It is therefore possible to determine an optimum oxygen addition range for which the thick films fired under such conditions will have the best characteristics. This optimum oxygen window is achieved thanks to a new regulation system which operates whenever variations occur in the quantity of paste processed.

Abstract

A new proprietary nitrogen‐based atmosphere control system (Alix 1) has been developed by L'Air Liquide, allowing control and regulation of the oxygen partial pressure in the burnout zone of a copper thick‐film firing furnace. The results of a collaboration programme whose objective was to test this system in industrial production conditions at Power Compact are presented. Use of this new system enables improvement of the adhesion results reached by this company in their copper thick‐film hybrid production and ensures a constant level of performance.

Abstract

Purpose

A higher-order implicit shock-capturing scheme is presented for the Euler equations based on time linearization of the implicit flux vector rather than the residual vector.

Design/methodology/approach

The flux vector is linearized through a truncated Taylor-series expansion whose leading-order implicit term is an inner product of the flux Jacobian and the vector of differences between the current and previous time step values of conserved variables. The implicit conserved-variable difference vector is evaluated at cell faces by using the reconstructed states at the left and right sides of a cell face and projecting the difference between the left and right states onto the right eigenvectors. Flux linearization also facilitates the construction of implicit schemes with higher-order spatial accuracy (up to third order in the present study). To enhance the diagonal dominance of the coefficient matrix and thereby increase the implicitness of the scheme, wave strengths at cell faces are expressed as the inner product of the inverse of the right eigenvector matrix and the difference in the right and left reconstructed states at a cell face.

Findings

The accuracy of the implicit algorithm at Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) numbers greater than unity is demonstrated for a number of test cases comprising one-dimensional (1-D) Sod’s shock tube, quasi 1-D steady flow through a converging-diverging nozzle, and two-dimensional (2-D) supersonic flow over a compression corner and an expansion corner.

Practical implications

The algorithm has the advantage that it does not entail spatial derivatives of flux Jacobian so that the implicit flux can be readily evaluated using Roe’s approximate Jacobian. As a result, this approach readily facilitates the construction of implicit schemes with high-order spatial accuracy such as Roe-MUSCL.

Originality/value

A novel finite-volume-based higher-order implicit shock-capturing scheme was developed that uses time linearization of fluxes at cell interfaces.

Purpose

Researchers recommend a reorganization of the medical profession into larger groups with a multispecialty mix. We analyze whether there is evidence for the superiority of these models and if this organizational transformation is underway.

Design/Methodology Approach

We summarize the evidence on scale and scope economies in physician group practice, and then review the trends in physician group size and specialty mix to conduct survivorship tests of the most efficient models.

Findings

The distribution of physician groups exhibits two interesting tails. In the lower tail, a large percentage of physicians continue to practice in small, physician-owned practices. In the upper tail, there is a small but rapidly growing percentage of large groups that have been organized primarily by non-physician owners.

Research Limitations

While our analysis includes no original data, it does collate all known surveys of physician practice characteristics and group practice formation to provide a consistent picture of physician organization.

Research Implications

Our review suggests that scale and scope economies in physician practice are limited. This may explain why most physicians have retained their small practices.

Practical Implications

Larger, multispecialty groups have been primarily organized by non-physician owners in vertically integrated arrangements. There is little evidence supporting the efficiencies of such models and some concern they may pose anticompetitive threats.

Originality/Value

This is the first comprehensive review of the scale and scope economies of physician practice in nearly two decades. The research results do not appear to have changed much; nor has much changed in physician practice organization.

Being the basic need of humans, but also an attractive element of the tourist offer, gastronomy is related to the attractiveness of a destination, and Balkan gastronomy is considered to be one of the most positive aspects of the tourist image of the region. This study aims to investigate the locals' perception of gastronomic specificity of ‘Balkan food’ and national (local) food as well. Furthermore, the study investigated how ‘Balkan food’ is perceived in terms of its tourist potential, uniqueness, quality, nutrition and its general role in the creation of a joint ‘Balkan’ tourist brand. The methodology included a historical approach and a survey which involved110 respondents. Out of 21 traditional dishes identified in the official tourist promotional activities of selected countries and a review of the relevant literature, the following are identified as regional ‘Balkan’ dishes: ‘pečenje’, ‘musaka’, ‘ćevapi’ and ‘sarma’. The following are identified as national dishes: ‘pastrmajlija’, ‘sogan dolma’, ‘raštan’, ‘pašticada’, ‘burek’ and ‘svadbarski kupus’. The results indicated that some nations have specific knowledge of certain dishes being considered national and regionally present, while other nations show a lack of knowledge of food origin and regional presence in identified countries. Furthermore, the results showed that different dimensions of Balkan cuisine significantly contribute to the tourist potential of the region, while the contribution of its nutritive characteristics is perceived as less important. Results showed that ‘Balkan food’ is considered to be important for the improvement of the ‘Balkans'’ image and promotion, as well as important for the creation of the regional tourism brand.

Abstract

Purpose

The cloud is a network of servers to share computing resources to run applications and data storage that offers services in various flavours, namely, infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and software as a service. The containers in the cloud are defined as “standalone and self-contained units that package software and its dependencies together”. Similar to virtual machines, the virtualization method facilitates the resource on a specific server that could be used by numerous appliances.

Design/methodology/approach

This study introduces a new Dragon Levy updated squirrel algorithm (DLU-SA) for container aware application scheduling. Furthermore, the solution of optimal resource allocation is attained via defining the objective function that considers certain criteria such as “total network distance (TND), system failure (SF), balanced cluster use (BC) and threshold distance (TD)”. Eventually, the supremacy of the presented model is confirmed over existing models in terms of cost and statistical analysis.

Findings

On observing the outcomes, the total cost of an adopted model for Experimentation 1 has attained a lesser cost value, and it was 0.97%, 10.45% and 10.37% superior to traditional velocity updated grey wolf (VU-GWO), squirrel search algorithm (SSA) and dragonfly algorithm (DA) models, respectively, for mean case scenario. Especially, under best case scenario, the implemented model has revealed a minimal cost value of 761.95, whereas, the compared models such as whale random update assisted lion algorithm, VU-GWO, SSA and DA has revealed higher cost value of 761.98, 779.46, 766.62 and 766.51, respectively. Thus, the enhancement of the developed model has been validated over the existing works.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a new DLU-SA for container aware application scheduling. This is the first work that uses the DLU-SA model for optimal container resource allocation by taking into consideration of certain constraints such as TND, SF, BC and TD.
