Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the practice of inequality in access to fish resources that occurred in Kuala Langsa. In sociology, ownership of the means of production have strong linkages with economic productivity. The problems that arise in Kuala Langsa is the existence of gaps in the ownership of the means of production, thus giving birth to the practice of inequality in the production arena of fishermen. On the other hand, the efforts of government intervention through the help of the means of production lead to internal conflict among the community of fishermen in Kuala Langsa.

Methodology Approach – This article uses the sociology paradigm in looking at economic development efforts through the help of production equipment for fishermen in Kuala Langsa. Data was collected through interviews with qualified local fishermen communities and city governments. The observations were made to see in practice the use of production equipment such as ships, where fish auctions were held, and fuel aboard.

Finding – This article concludes that the practice of fishery production is divided into two types: first, fisherman workers who depend on the production of production tools owned by investors; second, traditional fishermen who depend on production from government aid equipment.

Research Implications – The authors argue that these two production practices have led to the practice of inequality in access to fishermen production in Kuala Langsa. In the first case, the means of production is controlled by the investors so that the fishermen of the workers experience marginalization of access to fish resources. In the second case, government aid production programs also resulted in the internal conflicts of traditional fishing groups in terms of control of production equipment.

Originality/Value – This article contributes to the concept of economic development of the fishing communities in Aceh.

Since much of the design work for vessels and offshore installations occurs in countries other than where the vessel may operate or where the installation may be located, it is particularly important that the expected user be considered and accommodated through the design and operational phases of a project.

Within the framework of engineering design and marine operations, this chapter will discuss “soft” issues, such as organizational and line management decisions and personnel selection procedures, as well as “hardware” issues related to design of living and working environments. In particular, the chapter will address how culture should be considered while identifying “user” needs and requirements.

Computer simulation is a test-bed for research that began in the 1970s, grew tremendously in popularity in the 1990s, and has since continued to mature in complexity and realism. When computer simulations were in their infancy, their biggest advantage was the ability to have complete control over the environment in which the simulation took place. Missions could be changed from daylight to twilight with a few keystrokes. Weather conditions could be altered or inserted based on the needs of the experiment. Perhaps most importantly, the landmasses in which the simulations took place were boundless, in their cyber world.

Abstract

Introduction: The insurance industry is vulnerable to attacks as it deals with the personal information of its consumers and puts the insurance company’s business at risk in the event of data breach or abuse. To ensure the security of customer data, insurance companies must comply with various data protection requirements, including requirements imposed by laws, regulations, and standards. Following such a wide range of conditions can be challenging for insurance providers. For a long time, risk management has controlled data protection to ensure compliance with data protection law and ensure that data are processed correctly and that people’s fundamental rights are protected effectively.

Purpose: This chapter explains the role and significance of risk management. An organised way to identify and assess risks, mitigate or avoid risks as much as possible, and then manage and accept the remaining risks, implemented in data protection as needed, explained by the supervisory authority, is implemented by the responsible organisation. This document highlights the growing consensus surrounding risk management as an essential tool for adequate data protection. Furthermore, it addresses vital considerations that affect the role of risk in data protection law and practice.

Need for study: There is an increasing consensus towards the role and significance of risk management in data protection in the insurance market. As a result, regulators and legislators are focussing on valuable and new attention on standardising and expanding data protection in risk management practices. This paper has attempted to identify critical issues and principles of risk management in data protection.

Methodology: Secondary data analysis was conducted in this study by reviewing literature related to data protection, risk management, and the insurance sector. Again, science direct was used as a source of information. For this study, the literature review approach was chosen since it allows us to trace the growth of the subject matter and identify the patterns that have formed through time.

Findings: The insurance industry comprises general insurance and life insurance. It is found that there are various studies conducted on the privacy violation and data breaches of individuals in the insurance industry. The study also identifies the factors causing privacy issues and recommends improving data privacy management in the insurance market.

Practical implications: The current study can be referred to by academicians, marketers, industry people, and policymakers. In addition, the study encourages companies and academicians to investigate further the process of data protection in the insurance industry.

Abstract

Economics laboratories have become the primary locations of experimental economics research by the 1990s. They were a result of a decade long development from ad hoc opportune places to dedicated, purpose designed spaces. The distinctive feature of the economics laboratory and its key instrument became networked computers running custom-built software. However, the history of the economics laboratory is not just a history of evolving technology. I argue in this article that it is mainly a history of learning how to build an experimental economics community. Only a functioning community was able to change a physical place to a laboratory space. The distinction between place and space originates in the work of Michael de Certeau and I use it to analyze the evolution of economics laboratories. To this end, I analyze the case of Austin Hoggatt’s Management Science Laboratory at Berkeley in the 1960s as it illustrates the indispensability of creating a community centered on the laboratory. In contrast, the laboratories in Arizona and at Caltech since the 1980s, and in Amsterdam since the 1990s have become successful spaces, because, unlike Hoggatt, they focused equally on community building as on infrastructure and technology. This gave rise to social infrastructure and division of labor in the laboratory space.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming increasingly popular in agribusiness to help increase food production capacity for the ever-expanding global population. This chapter provides a holistic overview of the latest trends around the applications of IoT in agriculture. We begin by giving an overview of IoT and its capabilities, followed by a deep dive into the practical and realistic aspects of leveraging IoT into the agroecosystem. IoT is already being used for many intelligent agriculture applications, such as open-field agriculture, controlled environment agriculture (greenhouse), livestock breeding, agricultural machinery, and more. This chapter examines those applications and ventures beyond the farm into several other aspects of the ecosystem, including storage, warehouse ambiance control, agri-data analytics and decision control, logistics, environmental safety, etc. The contents of the chapter would be based on extensive studies and empirical analysis of the latest research papers on this subject from around the globe, accurately interpreted and transformed by the authors in light of their academic background and professional experience in the digital transformation arena.

Abstract

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.
