SMTech of Dorchester have appointed Ian Belchamber to the newly created position of Vision Applications Engineer. He will head SMTech's Vision Technology Unit and will design optic systems for the company's screen printers. The 100 series is currently fitted with both manual and automatic vision.

This conference, in the series being run by the National Physical Laboratory to help the electronics assembly industry consider the problems of CFC phase‐out, was essentially an updated repeat of the event held on 30 April, which had been a complete, standing‐room‐only sell‐out. Surprisingly, this repeat performance also attracted a full house and the format used has proved to be the most popular of all the NPL non‐CFC options conferences.

Since its early conception, the group has grown from a handful of enthusiastic engineers to the largest trade association in Europe, if not the world, for Surface Mount. As in previous years, SMART will be arranging Seminars, Hands‐on Workshops and Open Forums, giving valuable knowledge for those just entering or those already experienced in SMT. Open forums allow the opportunity for the exchange of information on a variety of different topics, building experience in the technology which would otherwise be unobtainable.

This conference was the second in the National Physical Laboratory series focusing in turn on each of the non‐CFC options for de‐fluxing soldered electronics assemblies. The first conference was on Controlled Atmosphere Soldering and the third will be on New Solvents.

The popular reflow day was repeated at Henley and commenced with Mike Judd giving an overview of current reflow techniques.

A highly successful one‐day conference was the outcome of the combined organisational efforts of the IMF PC Group and Dr Colin Lea at the National Physical Laboratory. Admittedly the theme heads the list of current ‘hot’ topics, but to attract over 250 delegates to a meeting at a busy time of year for the industry was evidence also of a well planned programme and effective promotion.

The Surface Mount Equipment Manufacturers Association (SMEMA) has announced that its new document is ready for release. ‘Reflow Soldering Terms and Definitions Glossary’ was compiled under the chairmanship of Mr Phil Zarrow of Vitronics. This SMEMA publication will be updated regularly under the ongoing supervision of this committee.

Morton International Inc. have purchased Hoechst AG's printed circuit materials business including their Ozatec dry film and liquid primary imaging photoresists, Ozatec liquid photoimageable solder masks and related process equipment. Concurrently, Hoechst and its US subsidiary Hoechst Celanese Corporation purchased Morton's semiconductor photoresist business. Completion of these transactions was effective from 4 August 1993.
