Metal cans are extensively used, in the retail distribution of foods and beverages, where packaging is required to be both robust and able to withstand sterilisation temperatures. Internal lacquer barrier coatings on the cans play an important role in maintaining the quality of the contents, by preventing any unacceptable metal contamination. It is, however, necessary to ensure that the presence of the lacquer does not itself make the contents unsafe. As yet, the European Commission has produced no directive relating specifically to safety rules for contact between foodstuffs and polymeric or plastic coatings on metal substrates (e.g. lacquer‐coated cans). It is therefore necessary to turn to individual national laws and regulations, or the Council of Europe Resolution on Coatings, for assurance on the safety of lacquer‐coated food and beverage cans. Discusses existing EC food contact legislation, and its possible future application to lacquer‐coated food and beverage cans.

Making Fine Powders ‐ Extremely fine and uniform particles, of 5–50 nanometers, have been produced by a process being developed at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories. Researchers have used the technique to synthesize new, highly dispersed catalysts with a high surface area. It offers a way to make other products which have improved properties: ceramic ball bearings and gears which are stronger and more durable than those available today, and pigments for paints and inks.

Scarcely a decade has passed since the paint industry embraced the concept of electrocoating in its modern sense. Its acceptance has been a gratifying one simply because it has been possible to translate this highly advanced scientific process into clearly demonstrated practical benefits. These benefits reflect themselves in the adaptation of the process to automation, and thus to economy in coating coupled with the achievement of highly desirable coating properties.

The changing requirements of the market for special purpose coating systems into the twenty‐first century. It has been brought to our attention that a major new multiclient survey into the changing requirements for special purpose coating systems into the 21st century is currently being undertaken by Information Research Ltd, who have some 20 years experience in the world coatings industry. This study, which is being backed by many of the major paintmakers and raw materials suppliers in Western Europe, Japan and the USA, will provide an independent overview of this important sector of the paint industry.
