Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of financial performance on carbon emission disclosure.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses ordinary least squares (OLS) multiple regression analysis on a sample of 177 Financial Times Stock Exchange 350 index (FTSE-350) non-financial firms to test the impact of market (Tobin’s Q) and accounting (return on equity) financial performance indicators on carbon emission disclosure.

Findings

The results show that the financial performance market indicator has a significant positive impact on carbon emission disclosure. The accounting indicator illustrates similar results except for Scope 3, where the results are insignificant. This study may help firms understand how financial performance affects carbon emission disclosure, particularly by showing that high-performing firms are motivated to maintain strong environmental practices and enhance carbon emission awareness.

Originality/value

This paper enhances stakeholders’ understanding of how firms’ environmental policies align with their financial objectives, thereby expanding knowledge in carbon accounting.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on stakeholder and legitimacy theory, this paper aims to investigate the impact of carbon emission disclosure on firm financial performance. Further, the study attempts to explore the potential moderating effect of firm size on this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on BSE 100 Indian firms for the period of 2018–2019 to 2020–2021. The association between carbon emission disclosure and firm financial performance, along with the moderating role of firm size, has been explored through regression models.

Findings

The present study confirmed the significant and negative association between carbon emission disclosure and firm financial performance. Furthermore, results reveal that firm size positively moderates the relationship between carbon emission disclosure and firm financial performance.

Social implications

Carbon emission disclosure helps corporate organizations advance the issues of climate change disclosure both nationally and globally.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current study is the first of its kind to explore the potential moderating effect of firm size on the relationship between carbon emission disclosure and firm financial performance. The current study provides significant novel insights into sustainability, climate change and finance literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the influence of climate governance on carbon emission disclosure.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on S&P BSE 500 Indian firms over six years, i.e. from 2016–2017 to 2021–2022. The panel regression has been used to determine the association between climate governance and carbon emission disclosure.

Findings

The results of this study suggest that climate governance exerts a significant influence on corporate carbon emission disclosure. Moreover, results corroborate that climate governance elements such as the environment committee, carbon strategy and environment management system are critical contributors to carbon emission disclosure.

Practical implications

This study adds to the emerging literature on climate change, carbon emission disclosure, corporate governance and climate governance.

Social implications

This work provides valuable insights to corporate managers and policymakers as the study concludes that climate governance enhances firms’ carbon emission disclosure.

Originality/value

Earlier literature has examined the influence of corporate governance on carbon emission disclosure. However, this study extends to the corporate governance literature by providing novel insights into how integrating climate governance elements into corporate governance can influence carbon emission disclosure. Moreover, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to explore the association between climate governance and carbon emission disclosure in the Indian context.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the authors examine the relationships between market-based regulations and corporate carbon disclosure and carbon performance. The authors also investigate whether these relationships vary across emission-intensive and non-emission intensive industries.

Design/methodology/approach

The study sample consists of the world's 500 largest companies across most major industries over a recent five-year period. Country-specific random effect multiple regression analysis is used to test empirical models that predict relationships between market-based regulations and carbon disclosure and carbon performance.

Findings

Results indicate that market-based regulations significantly and positively affect corporate carbon performance. However, market-based regulations do not significantly affect corporate carbon disclosure. This study also finds that the association between regulatory pressures and carbon disclosure and carbon performance varies across emission-intensive and non-emission-intensive industries.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study have key implications for policymakers, practitioners and future researchers in terms of understanding the factors that drive businesses to increase their carbon performance and disclosure. The study sample consists of only large firms, and future researchers can undertake similar studies with small and medium-sized firms.

Practical implications

The results of this study are expected to help business managers to identify the benefits of adopting market-based regulations. Regulators can use this study’s results to evaluate if market-based regulations effectively improve corporate carbon performance and disclosure. Furthermore, stakeholders may use this study to evaluate and improve their businesses' reporting of carbon disclosure and performance.

Originality/value

In contrast to current literature that has used command and control regulations as a proxy for regulation, this study uses market-based regulations as a proxy for climate change regulations. In addition, this study uses a more comprehensive measure of carbon disclosure and carbon performance compared to the previous studies. It also uses global multi-sector data from carbon disclosure project (CDP) in contrast to most current studies that use national data from annual reports of sample firms of specific sectors.

Abstract

Purpose

Companies are increasingly appointing a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) to anchor the need to highlight climate change at the senior management level. This study aims to examine how CSO power and sustainability-based compensation influence climate reporting and carbon performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Using one of the largest data sets to date, consisting of 18,834 company years through the author’s observations, spanning an 11-year period (2011–2021) in 33 countries. This paper used quantitative methods – specifically, ordinal logistic regression estimation. This paper measures the level of climate change disclosure based on the carbon disclosure leadership methodology. Carbon performance is based on the intensity of carbon emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2), which is a quantitative and relatively more objective measure.

Findings

The results suggest that climate change disclosure continued to increase and the carbon emissions intensity of the companies in this study gradually decreased over the sample period. This paper finds that the presence of the CSO within the top management team has a positive and significant influence on the level of information on climate change of the companies in the sample. This finding confirms the idea that the managerial capacity of CSOs motivates the disclosure of climate change. The empirical results confirm that there are differences in the role that the CSO and sustainability-based compensation play in influencing the quality of climate information disclosure in developed and developing countries.

Originality/value

The recourse on a mixed theoretical framework, which highlights upper echelons theory, argues the understanding of the role of CSOs in explaining the relationship between climate change disclosure–carbon performance relationship. The novelty of the study lies in the approaches adopted to describe the quality of climate change disclosure. To control for endogeneity, this paper uses a difference-in-difference analysis by adding a firm to the Morgan Stanley Capital International index as an exogenous shock.

Abstract

Purpose

Globally, the landscape of corporate carbon disclosures (CCD) is continually evolving as societal, environmental and regulatory expectations change over time. The goal of this study is to examine the challenges faced by Indian firms’ corporate carbon reporting (CCR). The literature recognized the hurdles to reaching net zero emissions and decarbonization, which are equally applicable to carbon disclosure (CD).

Design/methodology/approach

The scope 3 emission disclosure barriers (S3EDBs) identified from the literature were ranked, and their relationships were discovered using the “Grey-based decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory” (Grey- DEMATEL) technique.

Findings

The key findings are the S3EDBs, the most prominent barriers, their interrelationships and important insights for managers of organizations in prioritizing the action area for scope 3 CD. Eight S3EDBs were categorized in terms of cause and effect, threshold value is calculated as 0.78. “Quality, and reliability of data,” “Government policies and statutory requirement on emission disclosure” and “Traceability and managing supply chain partners” are the most prominent S3EDBs.

Practical implications

The results will help industry people in countries with emerging economies that have significant scope 3 carbon footprints. The managers can plan to deal with top S3EDBs as a step towards decarbonization and ultimately fighting climate change (CC).

Originality/value

This study is one of the first to rank these barriers to CD so that industry practitioners can prioritize their actions. The core contribution of this research is to detect the most significant S3EDBs and their interdependencies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the association between carbon emissions and earnings management (EM). This study also considers the effect of female CEOs on the association between carbon emissions and EM.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the carbon disclosure project (CDP) for carbon emissions data, the Compustat database for financial information and the ExecuComp database for female CEOs. The empirical sample of this study consists of 1,692 firm-year observations in the USA that voluntarily participated in the CDP survey from 2007 to 2015. Regression analysis and robustness tests are conducted for this study and both accrual and real EM are considered.

Findings

This study provides evidence that firms with female CEOs who voluntarily disclose their carbon emissions information engage in less real EM. Thus, the presence of female CEOs moderates the association between carbon emissions and EM. This study/paper also finds a positive association between carbon emissions and real EM, although there is an insignificant association between carbon emissions and accruals EM.

Practical implications

The association between carbon emissions and EM has important implications for investors, regulators and policymakers. This study suggests that policymakers should improve the conditions that promote inclusion of females in the top management positions to constrain EM.

Originality/value

This study focuses on the USA, which is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions in the world. The presence of female CEOs moderates the association between carbon emissions and EM and firms with female CEOs show a greater impact on EM.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the relation between firm-level climate change risks, measured by carbon emissions and waste generation, and the level of biodiversity disclosures.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on an international sample from 2009 to 2021, our study employs panel regression models to assess the effects of climate change risks on biodiversity disclosures. We also conduct a range of sensitivity analyses, including additional proxies, endogeneity tests, and alternative samples to examine the robustness of our inferences.

Findings

We find that firms with higher carbon emissions and waste generation levels tend to disclose extensive biodiversity information. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the disaggregated components of carbon (Scope 1 and 2) emissions and waste (hazardous and non-hazardous) generation volumes are positively associated with biodiversity disclosures. Our results also reveal that the effects of climate change risks on biodiversity disclosures are stronger for firms from environmentally sensitive industries. Finally, our results show that climate and biodiversity protection regulations appear to be effective in limiting legitimation efforts.

Originality/value

Consistent with legitimacy theory, our findings suggest that high carbon and waste emitting firms tend to utilize increased biodiversity disclosures as a legitimizing tool to conform to societal expectations and protect their legitimacy.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a conceptual framework based on an extensive literature review. The aim of this study is to deepen understanding of the relationship between carbon performance and the financial market by applying qualitative research approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

The investigation has identified 372 articles sourced from Scopus databases, subjecting the bibliographic data to a comprehensive qualitative–quantitative analysis. The research uses established protocols for a structured literature review, adhering to PRISMA guidelines, machine learning-based structural topic modelling using Python and bibliometric citation analysis.

Findings

The results identified the leading academic authors, institutions and countries concerning carbon performance and financial markets literature. Quantitative studies dominate this research theme. The study has identified six knowledge clusters using topic modelling related to environmental reporting; price drivers of carbon markets; environmental policy and capital markets; financial development and carbon emissions; carbon risk and financial markets; and environmental performance and firm value. The results of the study also present the opportunities associated with carbon performance and the financial market and propose future research agendas on research through theory, characteristics, context and methodology.

Practical implications

The results of the study offer insights to practitioners, researchers and academicians regarding scientific development, intricate relationships and the complexities involved in the intersection of carbon performance and financial markets. For policymakers, a better understanding of carbon performance and financial markets will contribute to designing policies to set up priorities for countering carbon emissions.

Social implications

The study highlights the critical areas that require attention to limit greenhouse gas emissions and promote decarbonisation effectively. Policymakers can leverage these insights to develop targeted and evidence-based policies that facilitate the transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon economy.

Originality/value

The study initially attempts to discuss the research stream on carbon performance and financial markets literature from a systematic literature review.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the factors driving the adoption of carbon management accounting (CMA) and various considerations that mediate its effectiveness in accounting and disclosure practices.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used an exploratory, cross-sectional, quantitative design. Academics, managements/executives, professional accountants, professional auditors and researchers served as the primary units of analysis. This study used a survey method to gather data through a structured online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The results revealed that the factors driving the adoption of CMA directly influence the effectiveness of CMA practices, with a significant mediating effect of regulatory and ethical aspects. Furthermore, this study revealed the difficulty of accounting, quantifying and reporting carbon emissions and revenue generation from the trading of carbon credits. This highlights the critical role of standard-setters and academics in deciding the concrete methodology to promote uniformity in carbon disclosures.

Research limitations/implications

The major limitations of this study are that it considered only the perception of experts and did not study the actual practices of CMA by considering companies that have already implemented CMA. Further studies should consider this aspect to validate the results of this study. Furthermore, the findings highlight the insignificant effect of economic, environmental and social aspects in enhancing the overall effectiveness of CMA. This is because of the limited number of factors considered in the study of such metrics. To overcome this limitation, future studies should consider wider aspects to validate the outcomes of this study.

Practical implications

The major contribution of this study is that it serves as a base input for business organizations, academics, researchers and regulatory authorities who are working to implement CMA strategies to reduce carbon emissions and promote net-zero business practices.

Originality/value

The outcome of this study is unique and new, as the subject matter of this study is in the nascent stage. The outcome of this study may become a significant valid input for regulators and policymaking companies to gain knowledge about CMA practices and motivate them to integrate CMA practices as part of their sustainability initiatives.
