Abstract
PRODUCTION of titanium in the USA during 1974 has been estimated at 15 000 tons, with the aerospace industry taking 75 per cent of the output. This is a considerable increase in the amount used during the preceding twelve months, and indicates that the trend towards titanium products for strength to weight ratio benefits has been accelerated by companies finding that cost reduction can be achieved by extensive use of titanium alloys. It is of interest to note that commercial aviation in the USA has represented the largest single user of this metal, but that this has recently changed with a marked trend towards military applications and in particular, the Grumman F‐14 and McDonnell Douglas F‐15 aircraft.

Abstract
Helicopter pilots carrying out search and rescue missions in zero visibility or a force eight gale rely totally on their electronic flight control systems. Few of those pilots, however, are aware that their remarkable safety record is due in part to the work of Pam Smith, one of the most outstanding systems engineers in the field of helicopter flight control. This week, Pam's achievements over the past 22 years have been recognised with the award of an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

BRISTOW Helicopters has now recorded over 15,000 operational AS332L Bristow Tiger and Sikorsky S‐61N flying hours with its combined Cockpit Voice and Flight Data Recorder (CVFDR). Developed in conjunction with GEC‐Plessey Avionics as part of an Integrated Health and Usage Monitoring System (IHUMS), the system received United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority approval in December 1991, well in advance of regulations requiring its installation in all UK registered public transport helicopters by 31 July 1992.
