Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the influence of work-to-family and family-to-work conflict on turnover intention (career break), mediated through job and life satisfaction among Indian women in the service sector, using role conflict theory as the base.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 421 usable responses from women who had taken a career break were collected using a 36-item scale from six major metro cities in India through social and digital media platforms. A purposive-cum-snowballing sampling method was adopted. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) through AMOS.

Findings

Findings suggest that job satisfaction (JS) is a significant predictor of turnover intention, both when work spills into the family domain, and family responsibilities spill into the work domain, thereby confirming the mediating influence of JS. Interestingly, life satisfaction (LS) only seems to mediate between inter-domain conflict and turnover intention partially.

Research limitations/implications

This is a descriptive study, and is thereby limited in terms of its generalizability, specifically as it included respondents only from six major metro cities in India.

Practical implications

The extended work-family conflict model could help managers structure organizational interventions that support women to deal with the challenges of managing the demands of both work and family domains, thereby reducing the negative influence on JS. Such initiatives could help reduce career breaks among women.

Originality/value

We explored the cause of career breaks among Indian urban women employed in the service sector, using the extended model of inter-role conflict and their attitudes towards both life and job.

Abstract

Purpose

Cultivation of a learning culture and subsequent enhancements in employee performance can be translated through employee engagement. This study aims to examine the mediating role of employee engagement in the relationship between the learning culture and employee performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research adopted a quantitative approach, wherein 450 questionnaires were distributed among employees in both public and private sectors in Nepal. A total of 389 questionnaires were returned, followed by two to three reminders. Convenience sampling was utilized, and the data was collected through a questionnaire survey. Descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modeling – Path analysis was used to describe and hypotheses testing. Data was analyzed using SmartPLS 4.0 and SPSS 24v.

Findings

It was found that employee engagement has a mediating effect on the relationship between the learning culture and employee performance. Learning culture also has a positive influence on employee engagement that eventually affects the performance of the employees. This conclusion suggests that fostering a learning culture within an organization should be focused on cultivating an environment that promotes active employee participation, thereby enhancing overall employee performance.

Originality/value

This article provides significant insights into the cultivation of a learning culture inside firms, with a specific focus on establishing an atmosphere that fosters active employee engagement to improve overall employee performance in the service sector. This tool has the potential to facilitate further investigation and progress within the area, while also promoting the adoption of evidence-based learning practices and their associated implications.

Abstract

Purpose

This article presents a methodological application of decision support with the purpose of identifying and better aligning sustainable banking strategies. Those strategies are based on best practices declared by employees and conducted during efficient periods affecting sustainable production, the health quality of clients, the organization’s profitability and social impact on the local community across different sectors.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach involves a two-phase process: first, it employs directional data envelopment analysis (DEA) to benchmark knowledge based on employee opinions gathered through interviews to evaluate strategies related to banking services; then, using the best-worst method and ELECTRE outranking incorporating elements of fuzzy set theory based on an experienced decision-maker’s input, sustainable banking strategies are ranked according the different perspectives for leveraging outputs from the first step.

Findings

The outcomes yield a ranking of strategies, emphasizing the crucial role of technology in banking services while highlighting the need for more agile services to ensure customer satisfaction. This underscores the necessity of aligning with the market perspective, as fintech companies are reshaping the socio-technological-environmental landscape of financial services.

Research limitations/implications

The research combined DEA and multicriteria analysis in the context of the banking sector, providing a comprehensive and analytically robust approach translated as a decision-making framework for promoting sustainability by aligning operational efficiency and social responsibility. These tools can guide banks in adopting more sustainable practices that benefit the institution, society and the environment.

Practical implications

Decisions in the banking sector encompass a wide array of concepts, from internal technical factors to customer feedback on service processes and offerings. The proposed approach considers decision analysis in complex environments, and the application developed in this study considered not only internal banking activity-oriented concepts but also the preferences of human agents developing them and the managerial perspective focused on issues involving components associated with sustainability.

Originality/value

By integrating DEA with multicriteria analysis, this study paves the way for a more efficient, environmentally conscious and socially responsible management scenario in the Brazilian banking sector. This research assesses operational efficiency and offers a comprehensive framework for selecting and implementing sustainable practices in the banking sector.
